17.01.2022 CAN ANYONE HELP TERRY NUNAN??? Is anyone able to remember who owned No 29 Osborne St long before it was purchased by the Leagues Club as the north eastern corner of their car park? To be hopefully published before Christmas, I am using online historical land records to track the ownership history of each block in the original Marshal Subdivision in the Dapto township from their first sale by the Marshall Family in the 1890’s through to the 1980’s-1990’s. However I am really... stumped on No 29 Osborne St (originally Lot 9 Section B)!! The block was first purchased in 1904 by Agnes O’Connell, wife of John O’Connell, Ganger of Dapto. Agnes died in 1905 and John was declared bankrupt in 1918. In the Illawarra Mercury 11.10.1918, Frank Bevan & Sons advertised that the block was to be auctioned the following day per order of Wm Palmer, the Official Assignee of J O’C’s bankrupt estate. However the subsequent newspapers do not record the result of the auction and, as sometimes occurred, the court-directed sale seems to not be listed in the Vendors Index (under either O’Connell, Palmer or any other court-related name or title I can think of). Hence I cannot continue with the chain of title / ownership for this one block from that date onwards. If I had the name of an owner for any time during the 1918-1986 period, I should be able to pick up the trail at that point and work both backwards & forwards to establish the full history. The ownership of adjacent blocks may jog someone’s memory: Either side of Lot 9 (No 29) were: To the south, Lots 6 & 7 (Nos 35 & 33) were in the hands of the Chie Family Lot 6 was sold to the Leagues Club in 1986, Lot 7 was sold by the Chies to LB Carlon in 1962, on-sold to AIS Credit Union in 1980 & then to the Club in 1993. Lot 8 (No 31) belonged to the Waples Family till it was purchased by the Club in 1984 Lot 10 (No 27 - now the Baan Baan St extension) - was owned by the Charlton Family in the 1920’s, Tomsett Family 1926-1947, Beveridge Family 1947, Pool Family 1947-1967, Gillies Family 1967-1976 and Brian Morrison 1976-1986 when it was then resumed for the Baan Baan St extension. Lot 11 (No 25 - north of Baan Baan St extension) was owned by the Charltons, sold to the Tomsetts in the 1920’s, and then Porters, Robertsons and finally to George Stanley Ball in 1937. George Stanley Ball’s Estate sold it to Alwyn Chie in 1999. Hopefully the above names of adjacent owners may prompt someone’s memories as to who owned the block in between. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Either add a comment to this post, FB message us at Wendyand Terry Nunan or email us on [email protected].

13.01.2022 TWO NEW RELEASES from Wendy & Terry Nunan JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS !!! Explore the origins of both the first and second town centres of Dapto!!... BROWNSVILLE LEDGERS, LETTERS, SEANCES & RECEIPTS Step back in time to the first Dapto town centre on the banks of Mullet Creek. These hand written treasures from the past are: the Daily Ledger from the Dapto Steam Flour Mill 1854-1856 (both scanned images and transcriptions); Accounts Book covering bottle sales from the Hotel 1857-1859, Flour Mill accounts 1866-1867 and property rents 1903-1909; 450 Draft Letters of John Brown dated 1900-1901 & 1909-1910; Receipt Books covering Brown Family investments and last but not least, accounts of a small number of séances held in the Brown household in 1880 (were the séances for real or were they an attempted financial scam??). Combined, these documents provide an eye witness’ insight into the local community of the mid to late 1800s and the start of the 20th Century. One can follow the changing agricultural pursuits of the Illawarra as echoed by the change in mill operations from providing a grinding service for local grain crops to becoming a flour and stock feed retailer, networking with similar Sydney and Wollongong outlets. The transcriptions are interspersed with mini biographies of key customers and contemporary newspaper advertisements for John Brown’s suppliers of choice for his mail order selections. The collection is prefaced with a brief family tree for the Brown Family and their close associates, the history of the Brown Family Estate (and hence the creation of Dapto), and a discussion on what these documents can tell us both about those who penned them, and the community they lived in. Fully indexed. A4 Soft-cover, 384 pages. Cost $45 plus $13 postage. 07.01.2022 This afternoon I called into to see the great local history book authors Wendy and Terry Nunan. I was lucky enough to get a peak of their new book 'Brownsville Ledgers, Letters, Seances & Receipts'. For anyone interested in early Dapto history, this book is just the best. It will be released in coming months with another early Dapto history book called 'Dapto Land Ownership History - The Marshall Estate'. Look out over the next month or so for more details on how to order the...se awesome books. Wendy and Terry still have copies of previous books available on 'The West Dapto Cemetery- The Early Families', 'The Black Swan' , 'Shellharbour's Forgotten Cemetery and Selected Pioneers', 'St Paul's Catholic Cemetery, Albion Park', 'For the Love of Will' and 'Brigadier Cecil Herbert Speer- An Old Campaigner'. All are fantastic, well researched books. If anyone is interested in any of these books, please contact Wendy and Terry Nunan by email [email protected] or message here https://www.facebook.com/wendy.e.nunan I cannot recommend these books enough. 03.01.2022 Today's historic photo of the day: The signalman has just given the staff to the driver of the Moss Vale to Wollongong passenger train at Dombarton, NSW, Decemb...er 14 1985. Located 97km by rail from Sydney via Wollongong, Dombarton is on the cross country railway between Moss Vale and Unanderra south of Sydney. The line, which connects the main south line at Moss Vale with the Illawarra line at Unanderra, is 57km in length and runs through lush and thickly vegetated areas as is descends the steep grades down the escarpment east of Summit Tank. Regular passenger trains on this line were provided by railmotors until their withdrawal in September 1985, just three months before this photo. Whilst the line lost its daily passenger rail service at that time, subsequent to that, loco hauled trains between Moss Vale and Wollongong ran on weekends only for some years thereafter. It was from one of these trains that this photo was taken. This line is unusual in that it opened in 1932, much later than most other rural railways. Dombarton signalbox and crossing loop opened later still, in 1942. The layout was highly unusual. Being located on quite a fierce gradient, it was equipped with a runaway track to 'catch' any downhill runaways. The runaway track was however also used as a crossing loop, but in a very unusual way. Trains entering the crossing loop would enter the runaway road and pull up to the dead-end, then they would reverse through a connecting track that ran beneath the main line before reaching a dead-end on the other side, then finally pull forward and re-join the main line from the other side. The crossing loop was effectively a zig-zag beneath the main line. These days, all the crossing infrastructure at Dombarton is gone, but the main line remains and although it doesn't carry regular passenger trains, there are semi-regular heritage trains through here and quite regular heavy freight traffic too.
