23.01.2022 It was very hot today for much of Australia and it will be hot again tomorrow. The effects of heat in birds can sometimes not be seen till days later when organ...s damaged by the heat begin to dysfunction. Ensure your birds have plenty of shade more then usual and sheds/aviaries made from tin and alike don’t offer the sufficient cooling benefits of trees and shade cloth. Lots of cool fresh water, a bird will not drink water if it’s warm which then places further pressure on the organs. For heavy birds such as Orpingtons, Sussex, large RIR etc - think about ice bottles in water troughs or erecting additional shade. Ventilation is also appreciated on these hot still days, gently moving the air around will also aid your birds cooling system. So if your sheds don’t offer ventilation consider doing something about that. On hot days like this I dampen the soil first thing in the morning, they will dust bath in that cooler soil which will help with cooling off their body.
