22.01.2022 Year 1 STEAM showcase This term Year 1 students were involved in a STEAM Project which consisted of creating a Space rocket in collaborative and mixed ability teams. This was a STEAM Project which integrated Stage 1 learning outcomes for Science, Technology, English, Art and Mathematics. Cluster 3, Stage 1 teachers planned these lessons during planning day using backwards mapping and collaborated throughout the 5 week teaching and learning cycle. The beginning of the project ...involved students understanding the parts of a procedure and the different aspects of Earth and Space. ICT and digital technologies including Bee Bots and Ozo Bots were used to assist students understanding of position which was blended in with Mathematics learning outcomes (Position Strand). During STEAM groups students were developing Art making skills as well as understanding how to work collaboratively to achieve a desired outcome. Students also explored food technology whereby they created a fruit rocket using fresh fruit and bamboo sticks. Each student was given a collaborative role such as team leader, maker, group communicator and resource manager to ensure that they had an equal contribution to the project. As students progressed throughout the 5 week cycle, they were supported in understanding what a rocket physically looks like and how it can move in Space. Our EAL/D students were supported through the front loading of vocabulary and developing the metalanguage relevant to the topics studied prior to the design phase of the project. Students were also assessed during a written and oral assessment task outlining their knowledge of Earth and Space as well as the parts of a procedure. At the end of the project, students will be showcasing their work along with their procedure explaining how they achieved their learning objective. See more

The group successfully completed a 5 week competition run by Grok Learning which taught us how to build a website as we went along. Every time you use the web, you’re seeing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. One of the most useful technical skills you can learn is to create a website. Students used HTML/CSS and JS to build a website from scratch and was challenged with a task of styling a website. Our group performed extremely well in the worldwide competition. We were awarded a range of graded certificates, from participation to high distinction with one student achieving a perfect score!
