24.01.2022 Are you interested in applying for Let's Take Over? Or do you know someone that is? Join us for a Q&A on Monday where you can ask any questions you might have in submitting your application. You'll also hear from previous participants Ashleigh Morris and Edwina Green who are joining the leadership team in 2020! Let's Take Over is a paid skills development opportunity for 15-25 years that are interested in building a creative career.

24.01.2022 We're really disappointed about the serious damage to the Gold Head guerrilla public artwork in All Nations Park recently. Earlier this year we made a commitmen...t to both the artists and our community to reinstall the popular artwork to ensure it was safe and accessible. 'Ol' Goldie' has been the hero we didn't know we needed for the past six months. So it's very disappointing to see the work was vandalised, especially as it was due to be auctioned to raise funds for homeless support services - an area in need now, more than ever. So, for now, the park is without it's shining light. We're speaking with the anonymous artists to work out what happens next... and once we know, we'll give you a head's up.

24.01.2022 Rawcus are an award winning ensemble and were set to premiere their performance GLASS with American choreographer, Marc Brew as part of Darebin Arts Speakeasy. GLASS was scheduled for August 2020 but is now postponed to 2021. We can’t wait to bring you this incredible show but for now, you can hear from the ensemble themselves. We asked them a few questions about what they're doing at the moment. * Can you briefly describe your practice? Rawcus is a long-term ensemble of 15 r...adically diverse performers. Together with a core team of designers we have been creating contemporary performance for 20 years. * Is there anything you are working on during lockdown? We have moved rehearsals onto Zoom and are working on the creation of some short films together. We are also all baking cakes so that we can simultaneously eat them together on Zoom next week for our 20th birthday celebration. * How are you filling the days? The Ensemble are filling their days by going on walks, dancing in their living rooms, getting to know their neighbours, home schooling their children, enjoying riding their bikes on empty streets, watching dance performances on the internet where you can see the sweat fly through the air, cooking and eating a lot. Some of us are playing lots ping pong, creating art projects from home, writing grant applications and one of has created a giant loom to keep herself occupied. * Has the pandemic shifted your approach to practice? At the core of our practice is collaboration, connection and relationship. This hasn't changed but we have been forced to adapt and creatively seek out new ways to find connection, meaning and creativity when we can’t be in a room together. We have been delighted and surprised to discover that our ability to pick up subtlety and nuance, exchange energy with each other and bounce off each other’s ideas still feels possible even when we are separated. * What’s the best thing you have been part of or privy to during COVID19? The clear night skies, the sparking green of nature, the return of birdsong and a feeling that the natural world has been afforded a small moment to breathe again. * What’s the first thing you want to do when ALL restrictions are lifted? Hug each other. We can’t wait to dance together, laugh and return to the normal rhythm and flow of conversation between a large group of people that is not determined by the internet platform you are on. by Pia Johnson

16.01.2022 We have some outstanding writers in Darebin! Jasmine Anoushian won 2nd Prize for the Darebin Mayor's Writing Award 2020 The judges described her winning piece 'You Could Be Here to See the World Change' as a careful account of how life spins out of control but also inevitably continues after a loved one has taken their life. Masterfully rhythmic with colour and repetition, the story captures the sense of being stuck, spiralling, unravelling and regret, while managing to balance the middle ground between bittersweet hope and poignant resignation. 10.01.2022 Michele Lee is the writer of Security, a performance work which was programmed as part of Darebin Arts Speakeasy at the Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre in August 2020. Due to COVID19, the play has been postponed but will premiere as part of our season in 2021. We interviewed Michele a few weeks back, if you didn't see it in our enews, here are a few highlights from it! * Can you briefly describe your practice? * I'm a playwright, who writes for the stage but I also create liv...e art, write for audio and for screen. * What were you doing when we went into lockdown? * On Saturday 14 March I was at a friend's wedding. It was full of artists, theatre and visual arts. There was a gorgeous air of generosity, as we peacocked around in colourful wedding attire and ate from byo vegie food platters (I made pakora and lemon semolina cake). Naturally, for an event filled with theatre artists, there were a lot of conversations about what 'might' happen for theatre as the night before MICF had just cancelled. * Has the pandemic shifted your approach to practice? * Like I said, because the pandemic has pushed towards going back to my desk job, and then that means managing that alongside my creative stuff, I've been thinking more long-term and thinking more about what sort of work I want to make, who I want to work with, because I won't have as much time to explore things I might only be vaguely interested in. A friend put it to me that it was sort of like now needing to do a strategic plan for myself, you know, outlining my values, my objectives, and measuring any new opportunities against this. And getting used to saying no and not getting too hung up on missing out. I guess it's about clarity, about sustainability. * What’s the best thing you have been part of or privy to during COVID19? * A friend started a photo event, where you dress up and post pics online every Friday. It's called #coronahighfashion. It's been fun doing this. It can take up a bit of time though! But that's ok, as I am trying to savour those days where you're not measuring your satisfaction around being productive. * What’s the first thing you want to do when ALL restrictions are lifted? * It might not be the first thing but I will be back out there seeing live performance.

Within her involvement Let’s Take Over 2020, she created a work, ‘Blak Workshop’ that set itself as a social experiment of disrupting, questioning and re-positioning non-Indigenous engagement with palatable blackness. She is excited to mentor, yarn and help produce work that is reformative, uncomfortable and challenging, while holding a cultural safe space for our participants, and the prioritisation of First Nations stories throughout the arts industry. Edwina has been a practicing artist since 2017, inclusive of works apart of YIRRAMBOI (2017 & 2019), Brunswick Music Festival, NSFW (New York) and various galleries on Kulin land. Edwina is ready to see the next Let’s Take Over creators, presented in partnership with Science Gallery Melbourne. Ashleigh Morris (they/them) is a queer theatre-maker and creative producer. Earlier this year Ashleigh produced a new participatory work, Mx. Whippy: the ice-cream gentle-them at Let’s Take Over 2020, presented by the City of Darebin. Last year Ashleigh completed their Master’s research project on Artist Wellbeing in a Festival Context and is looking forward to applying this knowledge in fostering the wellbeing of Let’s Take Over 2021 producers in a peer leadership role. Previously, Ashleigh has worked as Festival Producer of Guild Fringe! at Melbourne Fringe 2019, Director of MEDUSA at Mudfest 2019, Co-Creative Director of Tastings 2018, Creative Producer of Performing Arts at Mudfest 2017 and as a theatre-maker/performer at Fringe World 2015 and Fremantle Festival 2014. 03.01.2022 Susie Dee is the director of Archimedes War, a play written by Melissa Reeves about a young boy who experiences post traumatic stress from playing violent video games. Filling out copious forms for small pots of money - small grants/job seeker/keeper...etc. etc. And walking a lot and yes... Baking bread! *Has the pandemic shifted your approach to practice?* Well I am not on the 'floor'... this is where I flourish so have allowed my self a little more time for contemplation and time to reflect - I had been on a crazy theatrical wheel for the past 2 years... *Is there anything you are working on during lockdown?* Very lucky to be part of the editing process for our film (Shit)... working remotely as a collective - the editor creating sections - and watching/taking notes and having weekly zoom meetings *What’s the first thing you want to do when ALL restrictions are lifted?* Take a long drive and visit my daughter in Alice Springs
