25.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads stuck at home

25.01.2022 Calling all Victorians! Your official state commemoration service for ANZAC Day will be streaming live from 6am EST on the RSL Victoria Facebook page! Please tune in and #STANDTO as we remember all those who served.

24.01.2022 Today marks the 78th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein, one of the turning points of WWII. The Battle of El Alamein, began with a massive artillery bombar...dment preceding attacks by British and Australian divisions. Changing tactics from the drive westwards, General Montgomery ordered the Australians of 9th Division to switch their attack northward. What followed was a week of extremely fierce fighting, with the Australians grinding their way forward over well-defended enemy positions. Between July and November 1942, the Australian 9th Division suffered almost 6,000 casualties. Although the price was fearfully high, they had without doubt played a crucial role in ensuring an Allied victory in North Africa. General Montgomery acknowledged that he could not have won the battle without ‘that magnificent 9th Australian Division'. Today we remember the brave men who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of El Alamein! #rememembertoremember Image Courtesy: Australian War Memorial

23.01.2022 It is with sadness in our hearts we inform everyone that our Chef and Service Member Gavin Hoar passed away overnight from a heart attack after battling poor health for some time. Gavin enjoyed a laugh and was much loved by his colleagues and friends at the Darebin RSL. Our thoughts go out out to his family and friends.

23.01.2022 Stretcher cases boarding Number 7 Ambulance train. In the early days of the First World War, casualties arriving back in Britain were taken from hospital ships ...at Southampton to the nearby military hospital at Netley. However, as more and more casualties began to arrive, ambulance trains took passengers to newly opened hospitals across the country. These home ambulance trains carried the injured to hospitals as far-flung as Strathpeffer in the Scottish highlands. By 1918, the railway companies had built 20 ambulance trains for use in Britain and 31 for the continent. The continental trains were carefully designed to carry more passengers over longer distances. (National Railway Museum photo) Colour by Doug https://www.facebook.com/ColouriseHistory

Legacy has created an online merchandise shop that sells Legacy Bears, Badges and other merchandise: www.legacyshop.com.au. Funds will go towards helping support our veterans' families around the country. Do you collect Legacy Badges or Bears? Share your story below!

21.01.2022 While we can't mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two with traditional commemorations and gatherings, there are many ways we can connect with and... thank our veterans from home. To help commemorate and celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII, RSL Victoria has created a special illustration that we hope all our members will enjoy. Based off a real photo taken in Melbourne on August 15, 1945. Our commemorative image aims to capture the mood of the day that it was announced that the war was over. RSL Victoria invites you to print our commemorative image and display it in your homes on VP Day, 2020. You can download the poster here: https://bit.ly/2CmlYdM Children can also commemorate this historical event, with the help of their parents and families, by getting creative with our special colouring-in activity. You can find the activity here: https://bit.ly/3gUA8ln. Please share your images below of you and your family commemorating VP Day this Saturday! Visit https://bit.ly/3kFnl8H for more information on how you can commemorate VP Day from home this Saturday. #VPDay75

19.01.2022 Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Each year on the 18th of August also known as Vietnam Veterans Day, we honour and commemorate all those w...ho served in Vietnam, including the 521 Australians who died and more than 3,000 people who were wounded, injured or became ill as a result of the conflict. The Battle of Long Tan, on 18 August 1966, was one of the fiercest battles fought by Australian soldiers in the Vietnam War, involving 105 Australians and three New Zealanders from D Company 6RAR. A total of 17 Australians were killed in action and 25 were wounded, one of whom later died of his wounds. 53 years on we still remember these brave men and women who fought our freedom and will never forget the sacrifices they made to protect our beautiful country. Please keep these brave individuals in your thoughts today. #lestweforget Images Courtesy: The Australian War Memorial

19.01.2022 Happy Easter to all our members and friends. Our phones are still manned from 10am-1pm throughout Easter if you need to get in contact with us. We will still be making our calls to our veteran members throughout this time as well. 9484. 4353

18.01.2022 Our doors are closed but we're still here. Our phones are manned from 10am-1pm 7 days a week to answer your inquiries. We are also making contact calls to our members to check on their welfare and have a friendly chat during these challenging times.

18.01.2022 On Sunday night, PM Scott Morrison (ScoMo) put a call out to all Australians, to continue to honour and commemorate the sacrifice of our ANZACS and thank all th...ose who have served and continue to serve Australia in our defence forces. "ANZAC day is a sacred day for all Australians. It is an important time to remember the sacrifices of those who have gone before us, those who have laid down their lives or suffered great hardship to protect the Australian way of life," the Prime Minister said. "This year, we will not be gathering at the local cenotaph or attending gunfire breakfasts at the local RSL, or gathering together to bow our heads in silence and listen to the bugles at dawn. "But we will still remember the sacrifice of those who gave so much for us at Gallipoli and on many fronts, as we ourselves give what we can to protect Australian lives while we face this terrible virus." This year, a Dawn service will be broadcast on the RSL Victoria Facebook page live from the Shrine of Remembrance. Coverage will begin at 5:50AM on ANZAC Day. The RSL's #lightupthedawn campaign asks Australians to stand in their driveway, balcony or living room, with a torch or candle at 6AM, immediately following in the televised dawn service, to remember all those who have served and sacrificed.

17.01.2022 Battle of Flers-Courcelette. Reinforcements (possibly from a NZ division) crossing the old German front line during the advance towards Flers, 15 September 1916.... The battle of Flers-Courcelette, was the third main phase of the battle of the Somme. All three divisions of the XV corps (14th, 41st and New Zealand Divisions) reached most of their third objectives. In the centre of the corps 41st Division had the job of capturing Flers, and was given the most tanks. The village of Flers was captured early in the day, with one of the tanks playing a big part in the advance, driving up the main street of the village with the infantry following on behind. However, once beyond the village the advance stopped. The fourth objective, and with it the breakthrough was just beyond reach. 16.01.2022 Today we show our support for R U OK Day. R U OK Day is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to ask, "Are you OK?" and to remember every day... of the year to support people who may be struggling with life's ups and downs. Mental illness is a common stigma within the veteran community, and we hold social efforts, such as R U OK Day, close to our hearts. So please remember to ask your loved ones, friends, colleagues or even a stranger "Are you ok?", it could be the difference in changing someone's life for the better! If you're in need of some help or in the wrong headspace, please reach out for support or call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for 24/7 crisis support. For veterans and their families in need of help, please call Open Arms - Veterans & Families Counselling on 1800 011 046 for free and confidential support. #ruok

14.01.2022 Just over 20 years ago, on September 20, 1999, an Australian led, multinational peacemaking mission known as INTERFET (The International Force East Timor) helpe...d to bring peace and stability to East Timor after years of unrest. In the days leading up to the INTERFET deployment, the Chief of the Defence Force at the time, Admiral Chris Barrie, said INTERFET would be the most significant military undertaking we [Australia] have had since World War Two. To help commemorate this significant anniversary, RSL Victoria has published seven stories from servicemen and women, civilians and journalists who were in East Timor during INTERFET. Their stories are ones of service, resilience and hope. We encourage all of our followers to click this link: http://interfet.rslvic.com.au/ and explore our commemorative feature on INTERFET. 13.01.2022 His rank was ordinary seaman, but there was nothing ordinary about Edward Teddy Sheean. He was just 18 years old when he defied orders to abandon ship as the ...rapidly-sinking HMAS Armidale came under heavy attack by Japanese aircraft in the Timor Sea on the 1st of December 1942. Instead, Teddy, the youngest member of the crew, raced to help cast off life rafts and the ship’s two boats, before scrambling back to an anti-aircraft gun, strapping himself in, and blazing away at the enemy planes as they strafed his crewmates in the water. Although badly wounded in the chest and back, he kept firing even as the ship disappeared beneath the waves. Of the 149 men on board Armidale, 49 survived thanks to Teddy’s actions that day. Seventy-eight years after he sacrificed his life to save his crewmates, Teddy was awarded Australia’s highest military honour for acts of bravery during wartime. The Victoria Cross was presented to his nephew, Garry Ivory, who travelled from Tasmania to the investiture ceremony at Government House in Canberra. Garry has dedicated almost half his life to campaigning for proper recognition of his uncle’s bravery. It’s everything for me and the family, Garry said. I never gave up. I continued to fight on. I used to look at the painting at the War Memorial, and say, ‘He fought till his last breath, so if I’ve got to do that to get him awarded the proper recognition, I will,’ and that was my aim right through. I would look at a copy of the painting and that used to inspire me. He fought to his last breath, so I can do the same. He was proud to see his uncle’s story told at the Memorial in a moving Last Post Ceremony read by the Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Michael Noonan. It’s been 32 years all up, but the way I’m feeling now, it’s been worth every minute. It is very, very special, and I’m very, very proud. 08.01.2022 Today we commemorate the Battle of Beersheba. On 31 October 1917, the heavily fortified town of Beersheba, in what is now Israel, was the scene of a historic mo...unted charge by the men of the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade. Commencing at dusk, the brigade stormed the town, using their bayonets as swords. The momentum of the surprise attack carried them through the Turkish defences securing the town before it could be destroyed by the retreating Turkish force. The unconventional approach was a successthe town and its wells were secured, providing the 60,000 allied troops with access to the region’s only dependable source of water. However, 31 men from the Light Horse lost their lives and an additional 36 were wounded. Sadly, at least 70 horses also died during the charge. This November, please remember to buy a poppy or donate as we honour all of those who served our country, both past and present, and thank them for their bravery. #remembertoremember

08.01.2022 With so much going on right now, it's easy to become angry and judgemental towards each other. At the end of the day, our job as police is to make sure that eve...ryone is safe and feeling safe. We also understand that so many people are struggling with mental health issues right now. If you are struggling please know that there is help available: www.lifeline.org.au And for now, hopefully here's something that might make you smile, even if it's only for a short time. Stay safe everyone! Together, we will get through this.

06.01.2022 Today we commemorate Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War! Victory in the Pacific Day, or VP Day, commemorates the end of the Second Worl...d War on August 14, 1945, when Japan accepted the terms of the unconditional surrender set by the Allied Nations. Also known as VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, it is commemorated on August 15, the day that Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the end of the war in a radio broadcast, before the signing of the official surrender took place on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan, on September 2, 1945. VP Day meant an end to Australias war against Japan in the Pacific; a war that had begun half a world away in Europe that was brought close to home after Japans unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941, We remember the sacrifices and service of our Diggers who fought for our freedom in the Pacific. #wewillrememberthem. 05.01.2022 Today marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Australian prisoners of war at Changi. While many Australians know of the heroic deeds of Weary Dunlop, t...he illustrious and indefatigable surgeon who assisted the wounded and dying, less will know of Corporal Rodney Breavington, who was executed on 2 September 1942 at Changi Beach for trying to escape. British and Australian officers witnessed the execution; they later wrote that Corporal Breavington faced death with remarkable fortitude. 04.01.2022 We are calling on our RSL Victoria community to get behind our health officials by downloading the COVIDSafe App. The more people who download COVIDSafe will me...an that the spread of the virus can become controlled. If you are sceptical or have concerns about the app regarding your privacy, we have been reassured by our Government and tech experts that the COVIDSafe App uses Bluetooth only and not GPS, unlike most of your other apps that you already installed that have access to your GPS, photos, mic and contacts. The app will only keep contact information for 21 days. Once the pandemic is over, and the app is no longer needed, the app and all its data will be deleted permanently. You can download the app at: https://covidsafe.gov.au The sooner we eliminate this virus the sooner we can get back to enjoying our normal life again.

02.01.2022 29 September 1918 Men of 137th Brigade, 46th Division, are addressed by Brigadier General J C Campbell VC CMG DSO on the Riqueval Bridge after breaking the Germ...an's Hindenburg Line defences. (The Riqueval Bridge spans the St. Quentin Canal north of Bellinglise) The Battle of St Quentin Canal was a pivotal battle of World War I that began on 29 September 1918 and involved British, Australian and American forces in the spearhead attack and as a single combined force against the German Siegfried Stellung of the Hindenburg Line. Under the command of Australian General Sir John Monash, the assault achieved all its objectives, resulting in the first full breach of the Hindenburg Line, in the face of heavy German resistance and, in concert with other attacks of the Great Offensive along the length of the line, convinced the German high command that there was little hope of an ultimate German victory.
