Hind was overlooked in seven National Drafts, while Marsh gave footy away completely at just 20 year...s of age to focus on his mental health. Their unique pathways to the Saints paved the way for one of the club’s strongest friendships. And now, the boys are speaking up about the importance of checking in on your friends, thanks to Dare Iced Coffee and R U OK Day. The boys’ bid to save a bit of petrol money led to a 1-hour commute to RSEA Park each way, which Hind credits with breaking down barriers. Getting out of the car sucked at the end of the hour driving home to Footscray, we’d just be laughing for an hour in traffic. In footy, not everything goes your way, and it’s good to have close friends that you can talk to, whether it’s about something serious or something not so serious. Marsh’s own experiences with mental health mean he knows the value of having a mate in your corner. We talk to each other about how we’re going football-wise, but Nick and I have got that relationship where we’ve talked about things that have happened outside of footy as well. It breaks that cycle of chucking everything on your own shoulders, which is obviously a stigma in society. When you find that person, that’s what’s important. "It was quite special that he asked me to live with him and Sam for a few months, he’s boosted my confidence and I feel like he’s always caring for me, Long says. I love playing footy with him and I’m always happy around him, so that’s a good thing." Now, the boys are speaking up about the importance of leaning on each other for support, thanks to Dare Iced Coffee and R U OK Day. I feel like it’s important to be in contact with your friends and checking in with them and seeing how they’re going, not just asking ‘how are you?’, but asking a bit more and actually seeing how everything’s going, Hill says. I always FaceTime my friends, so they probably get a little annoyed, but I feel when you have that connection and get to see them it’s very important to keep in contact with people. Obviously it’s a tough time in the world at the moment, and I feel if you can spend a bit of time talking to your friends and chatting to them a few times a week it’s really helpful for everyone."
