22.01.2022 This week Dark Carnival kicked over 10 years. When it was created, I was working full time, shift work included. 2010 DC was an entity in my garage. 2010/11 DC ran out of a school basketball court and my garage. 2011/12 DC joined the awesome team @stockade_training_centre where we were able to build surrounded by amazing supportive people. 2013 DC stepped out into its own premises (alongside @thefunclife )... Sharing a 500sqm space in Woden. This also signalled my resignation from @ausfedpolice to focus on DC. 2014/2015 DC needed more space so we did a swap with Func. 2016 DC became a co-owned entity by myself and the amazing @tashdarkcarnival 2018 DC moved to its own premises in Phillip. 2020 has been an interesting year however not enough to stop DC, in fact, quite the opposite. To everyone who has supported DC over the years, thank you. As we roll into our next phase of growth we look forward to becoming a part of your story, as you become a part of ours. 08.01.2022 Pt 2 Yup, still in the bath and yes, 2020 was a 2 parter. With the grand reveal of DCHQ, @little.aussie.traveler and I also revealed that we are having a baby girl in Apr2021. I also proposed to Meika. So now we are engaged!... As I write this really important stuff drops back into the timeline... Meika and I bought a house! We have a home now that was in October. The end of year then saw an advanced Muay Thai grading which saw 2 of the coaches achieve Brown rank and Dan and Ben receive their Green rank. Tonight it is a celebration of seeing this year out. What a year it was! Fire, travel, dog, virus, virus, virus, growth, pregnant, engaged, growth. And although the virus is still doing its thing. Term 3 is always fun with the kids learning to use their legs to defend themselves.... Week 9 sees the kids tested on their technique both offence and defence, but, most importantly to respond appropriately. Just because someone pushes you, doesn't mean you can hit them. Just because you turn up, doesn't mean you pass and term 3 is one of the toughest gradings to pass. 03.01.2022 In the wise words of Vinnie Jones "It was emotional". 63 hours in @dandarkcarnival turned around to ask the competitors behind him if they liked pokemon. Yup. Pokemon. Standing there, hand off the car.... It was an interesting 'competition' to say the least, and more so an interesting insight into why our society is cactus with the number of morally flexible individuals. 01.01.2022 Pt 1. Last training session of 2020 done and dusted. Trying to revive life back into my poor hamstrings...what better time to look back on the year that was.... Started a scorcher. Literally on fire. A lot of people lost their homes and livelihoods, uncertainty was rife. There was fire on the hills and we were put on notice to evacuate. Through it all, the good people at DC supported each other and the community at large raising over 7k in donations for fire relief. We took on a trainee @riley_darkcarnival who over the year has grown on and off the mats, displaying his knowledge and passion for martial arts and taking an interest in the awesome people we get to interact with. Got to go to Fiji and see 2 amazing humans get married (Phil & Carla). Love you guys. Adopted another dog! Maeve Got to catch up with the legendary @chrishaueter96 and see Riley, @lachlanhc @greeneggz and @dandarkcarnival receive their blue belts and Dan's purple belt. As well as seeing @lt_darkcarnival Receive his black belt after 20 odd years of training, maybe 300...who knows. Then it all got turned upside down because someone ate a bat (allegedly). I would be lying if I said I was cool calm and collected facing what could be the end of my industry, however, we kept moving. Operation Black Circus was activated and we did what we could in the carpark at the gym. Myself, Dan, Riley and the champion @dougbatmanhall got to work creating the DCOA. Days into weeks, weeks into months then we got the good news, can reopen in a fashion. Creative use of pool noodles and plastic rods enabled us to keep training and man it was good to see people again. While the world fluctuated, Canberra stabilised. Slowly we returned to 'normal' through a hero, called Barry, who became the face of covid. This presented opportunities, we brought on @bjjrodrigosilva to head up our BJJ program. Upstairs became vacant in a renters market...so we took the plunge, doubling the floor space of DC and starting the groundwork for DCHQ. Around this time @little.aussie.traveler and I also started a process The hard work went in, DCHQ started to take shape and maaaaan what an outcome. Pt 2...
