23.01.2022 Did you know that Australia's first printing press was located on the site of First Government House, now the site of the Museum of Sydney? Today for National ...Archaeology Week SLM curator Annie Stevens shares some of the forty-six tiny pieces of lead type found on our site during archaeological digs in the 1980s. It is believed this lead type, along with a wood-built screw press, was brought to the colony in 1788 on the First Fleet. This tiny metal printing type was probably used by George Howe, a convict and experienced printer by trade who became Government Printer, and who printed the colony’s first weekly broadsheet, the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, from 5 March 1803. #NAW2019
