25.01.2022 4 years ago a friend brought their son around to grab some acrylic dinosaurs. So much has changed in the last 4 years... Ive gone grey... I no longer cut acrylic dinosaurs and some things have not changed....Im still happy to prattle on about how the laser works and the studio still has not been plastered *sigh*
25.01.2022 Last month I posted about some work I did that was going to be made into a Treasure Chest/Toy Box/Trinket Box. Its been finished now. And check this out. Mark and the guys at Lifestyle Furniture - The Solid Timber Specialists have done an abso-freaking-lutely smashing job. Have you seen a nicer keepsake box than this? I can only dream of being able to do woodwork of this quality! Well done to Mark & co for a job well done.
24.01.2022 Working on some pretty posh table numbers for Fawcett Halls upcoming Autumn Dinner. They are made from redgum and brushed gold acrylic. The dedication plaques are all attached. Tomorrow the numbers go on, they get assembled and then a final coat of oil.
23.01.2022 Lest We Forget. Remembering Our Animals On Remembrance Day. Ten million fighting men died in World War One. But what is less remembered is that at least eight million horses died too, a number that is absolutely inconceivable to me. According to the Australian War Memorial, during WWI Australia sent 136,000 horses overseas to be used by used by the Australian, British and Indian armed forces. Tragically, only ONE horse from the 136,000 made it back home to Australian soil. Th...is heroic horse was Sandy, who belonged to Major General Sir William Bridges who was killed in battle at Gallipoli. A gentle bay standing at 16 hands high, he was the Majors favourite charger and it was his dying wish to have his beloved horse returned home to Australia to enjoy a long and happy retirement. When the Major died, Sandy was put into the care of Captain Leslie Whitfield and was transported to Egypt then onto France in March 1916. It wasnt until the following year that the Australian authorities were able to honour the Majors dying wish and granted Sandy a safe passage to return home to Australia. The big bay lived out his days munching on green grass at Maribyrnong in Melbournes west, around the place named Remount Hill, where many thousands of horses bound for war, Sandy included, had earlier begun their long one-way journey. In 1923, Sandy had to be put down due to ill health. Its tragic to think Sandy was the only horse to return home once the war was over. While some of the horses who survived were sold to the British Army and others were given to locals, many soldiers chose to go against the armys orders and destroy their horses rather than leave them on foreign soil. I cant begin to imagine how devastating and heart-wrenching this would have been for these soldiers, but heres a poem from Major Oliver Hogue which sheds some light on the gut-wrenching situation: I dont think I could stand the thought of my old fancy hack Just crawling round old Cairo with a Gyppo on his back Perhaps some English tourist out in Palestine may find My broken-hearted Waler with a wooden plough behind. No, I think Id better shoot him and tell a little lie: He floundered in a wombat hole and then lay down to die. Maybe Ill get court-martialled; but Im damned if Im inclined To go back to Australia and leave my horse behind. From Australia in Palestine, 1919 Reference: Australian War Memorial
21.01.2022 Did some custom Christmas glasses this week! 8 designs on water, flute, white and red glasses. That is sure to be a very festive Christmas table!
21.01.2022 How often do couples get to celebrate their birthday together? Married couple Kym & Gary did - their 60th & 70th birthdays! Such an occasion deserves a stunning cake and an extra special cake topper. This custom cake topper is made form silver mirror acrylic. Cake by Harvesting the Feast from Alexandra.
20.01.2022 This is my sort of Christmas display. One of her uptight religious neighbours complained... so she "fixed" it - she added halos to the dragons and now they are angels! And just to make sure they were appropriately Christmasy she added two more dragons to the group. Dont take shit from anyone!
20.01.2022 Its that time of the year again. I was out in the sun today sanding Vic Ash blocks to make the awards for the 2018 Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show. Tomorrow I learn a new woodworking skill - plunge routing! Photos tomorrow of how that goes!
19.01.2022 Theres no prettier place to perish than Queensland! Velociraptors *chuckle*
19.01.2022 I dont often work with acrylic anymore - this is one of those rare-ish jobs. Its made from opaque white and transparent fluro pink 3mm acrylic. It is 290mm diameter. Its a name plaque to go in a new-borns room. Hopefully shell love it so much shell keep it forever :) This style of sign would also work for business logo / corporate displays.
19.01.2022 We shall remember them.... ...the horses, dogs, cats, birds and other animal companions who, like the members of our defence forces, lost their lives in a war not of their making. RIP ANZACS - furred, feathered and humans.
19.01.2022 Last week, before I got started on the trophies for the Truck Show, I made half a dozen chopping board thank you gifts for the Foster Care Association of Victoria to give to their speakers.
18.01.2022 Assembled, oiled and polished. The table number for Fawcett Hall look rustic and oh so classy. 16.01.2022 The weather was absolutely perfect today for the Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show and earlier today the guys handed out the trophies to the lucky winners. Congrats to everyone involved This is the third year the guys have asked me to do the trophies for them. Thanks for your support guys!! Here is the presentation of the awards > https://www.facebook.com/AlexandraTruckShow/videos/1818570761534720/ As always, the trophies are designed and hand built from scratch by yours trul...y - 100% originals! This years trophies are made with in hand sanded Vic Ash stained light Jarrah and topped with acrylic vehicles in black & rose gold/bright light copper for the main awards and black & stainless steel for the model truck awards. The photos are not showing the rose gold as well as Id like. See more
15.01.2022 This week I finished an award for the local Healesville chapter of the Country Womens Association. I did the base and the very talented guys over at the Healesville Glass Blowing Studio made the glass dome. Each year the local CWA groups will hold a creative arts competition and a new plaque with the winners name and the chapter they belong to will be added to the sides.
14.01.2022 And so it begins. Plunge routing the the channels for the acrylic inserts for the 2018 Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show awards. Ill admit its not the most elegant of jigs/set-ups yet will hopefully get the job done. Why, you are probably wondering, am I out in the yard with this job and not in the studio? Mostly because I dont want the sawdust getting anywhere near the laser engraving machine... and also because it is much more pleasant in the sun today - its too nice a day to be in a cold, dark studio... and bonus, I get a view and the odd visit from Rory.
13.01.2022 If any of you are looking for Mothers Day presients, I might have what you need over on Yarra Valley Maker https://yarravalleymaker.com.au
12.01.2022 Speaking of our little Aussie friends, here are some real cuties getting into the Easter spirit. Caution: Contains Bilby
12.01.2022 I did the award plaques for the Australian Sparkling Wine Show again this year. The major awards were provided by Ridel (really posh serpentine, stripy decanters) and the class awards by Healesville Glass Blowing Studio (stunning custom work!). I contributed the plaques and the main award acrylic bricks (for lack of a better term :) ) This year Hollydene Estate Wines won the "Best Mature Wine of Show" award as well as a class award. ... Well done guys! See more
12.01.2022 I hope everyone had an awesome Christmas Day!
12.01.2022 Ive just watched two drunk, orange T-Rexs throw snow at each other! My life is complete!
11.01.2022 Many millions of animals died during WWI including many thousands of Australian horses, mules, donkeys, birds, cats & dogs. Mans best friends went to war and so very few came home. Lest we forget.
11.01.2022 Check out these matching menus holders that were delivered to the Black Spur Inn this week. The full A4 menus are for food and the smaller one for wine. Im looking forward to seeing them with their printed menus in them. I also made a box to sit on the counter and make it easy for the staff to grab the menus. The menus are made from a 5mm Vic Ash ply which I get pressed up especially for me. Vic Ash is a local tree in the Yarra Valley and Murrindindi Ranges so Im sure they... will look right at home on The Spur! These are new to the line up - up until now Ive used bamboo for all my menus. The Vic Ash looks way classier than the bamboo! I used this ply when I made the Butlers Tray for the Gin Gift Set. Each time I find a new use for it, I fall more in love with it <3

10.01.2022 5 years of DarkLight Laser So much has changed..... including the logo (which is a true blessing!).
09.01.2022 I finally have a bit of time up my sleeve to post something. Queens Birthday weekend is when the Alexandra Truck Show took place and I got to do the awards again (thank you guys)! As always, ther was a new design for 2019. Congrats to all the winners!
09.01.2022 I will never support an Australian business participating in the blatant Americanisim of "Black Friday" sales. This blog article sums it all up and gives you a nice email template if you want to let a business know how you feel about their inappropriate marketing :) https://sustainablepathways.com.au/why-black-friday-sales-/
08.01.2022 Made some jar swing tags for Harvesting the Feast for the Fawcett Hall Autumn Dinner. Caterers and cafes love these little tags.
08.01.2022 The next stage in the awards for the 2018 Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show - staining and oiling. Ive chosen a light Jarrah stain in case you were wondering what the colour is. Unfortunately at this time of year, its too cold to stain or oil timber and leave it in the studio overnight (low temperatures affects the finishes when they are setting)...... so they are in the dining room being kept toasty warm by the heater. And now the house reeks of stain! On the up side... I wont be able to smell it after a couple of glasses of red!
08.01.2022 All done. Im going to call this a routing success! 50 pieces in total and I only cocked up two :) 46 for the Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show and a few spares... because you never know what can go wrong. A quick sand to remove any dags and then staining and oiling.
07.01.2022 Check out the gin themed glasses & chopping board I made over the weekend :D
06.01.2022 Ive just finished packing up these signs and some matching menus. These guys are to be shipped to Europe. Can anyone guess where they are headed based on the language? NO GOOGLING!!
05.01.2022 I have a serious case of CBF today. Do any of you suffer from CBF? Is it the weather (lord knows we need the rain... still), is it Fridayitis, is it a lack of wine? Even Rory is suffering from CBF. Hes hidden his nose and wont even talk to me Talk to me people... that way Ill have an excuse not to do BAS :)
04.01.2022 Thats it! Its all done an dusted (at least from my end). The Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show trophies have been dropped off. Ill post some photos late Sunday after the lucky winners have their trophies in hand. I now will be partaking in a glass or five of sparkling red to celebrate!
03.01.2022 Finished a job earlier this week. A client was getting a toy box/treasure chest custom made for his grand daughter and he wanted to engrave her name and some flowers on it. This piece of Vic Ash will become the from of the toy box. There was a small knot which was just above the name that I thought might distract from the otherwise uniform appearance of the piece. So rather than fight nature, we decided to pop a butterfly over the knot and incorporate it into the design :) Im looking forward to seeing the treasure chest when its completed.
01.01.2022 Merry Christmas to you all. Cheers!
