23.01.2022 IN THE PRESCHOOL........ After a pretty full on day, in and out, trying to dodge the rain, we decided to stop for a story. We read the book, ' The smallest turtle', by Lynley Dodd. The turtle has lots of dangers to overcome - one of which is seagulls. We talked about how seagulls like to eat turtles and one child said....'They like chips too.'

20.01.2022 Modeling language: I feel like I always say TO do it, but not always WHY you should do it! And the WHY is what gets parents to buy in to what we say! Fail on my part, but better late than never, right?!?

19.01.2022 "I can do it myself." Music to a teacher's ears! Yesterday, a child that at the beginning of the year said he couldn't draw, said these words when asked if he wanted support drawing a picture of one of our puppets 'Connie Confidence'. This is what getting ready for school looks like.

19.01.2022 Can you help? In the preschool we are making a fruit and vegetable collage rainbow, to encourage the children to 'Eat a rainbow' each day. We are looking for old food catalogues if you are one of the few who still receives junk mail! Any donations appreciated. Thanks

15.01.2022 Executive function skills help us manage information, make decisions, and plan ahead. We need these skills at every stage of life, and while no one is born with... them, we are all born with the potential to develop them. But, how do we do that? Through interactions, practice, and even imaginary play! Check out this guide for more activities that can enhance #executivefunction: https://developingchild.harvard.edu//activities-guide-enh/ See more

14.01.2022 Its understandable that recreational screen time for ourselves and our family may have increased while we were spending more time at home. Now that were able... to get out and do more, it may be time to gradually reduce how often we spend in front of our screens. Replacing screen time with physical activity can help your family to be healthier by staying active, as well as improving your child's concentration, problem solving and social connections. If youre trying to reduce your familys screen time, try out some of these tips: Establish family screen rules that everyone sticks to Involve your kids in meal preparation and have screen free mealtimes Have one screen free day each week Encourage your kids to get outside and be active whenever possible Keep bedrooms screen free Go on a family walk Aim to reduce your own screen time to set an example For more info, visit https://bit.ly/31cel3t

13.01.2022 Yesterday, Veterinarian Dr. Mario from Adelaide Animal Emergency and Referral Centre came to visit us. Thanks Dr. Mario! Some of our children's feedback.... "I liked Dr. Mario because he takes care of animals when they're sick." See more

13.01.2022 Good opportunity for families.

12.01.2022 Hello Everyone. We are still waiting to hear when we will be able to start playgroups again. Hopefully we'll hear soon? While we're waiting Helen read Monkey and Me - she reads this at Baby playgroup.

12.01.2022 , . It's officially National NAIDOC Week, and this year’s theme is Always Was, Always Will Be. It's about recognising that First Nations... people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. They also built and engineered structures predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. To learn more about the theme, visit: www.naidoc.org.au or follow National NAIDOC. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek

10.01.2022 Beautiful weather for enjoying the great outdoors.

10.01.2022 Thank you Marion LIFE for supporting our community.

10.01.2022 We've been planting seeds and asked the children..."What is a seed?" We loved this response...."Eat the seeds....you get strong and you can drive a car."

09.01.2022 Let them help. Yes, it will take twice as long to do the dishes if your four-year-old is helping but a little investment now goes a long way in the future. Te...aching your child how to do the dishes by doing them together, prepares him for when he can do them on his own. Plus, when your child is allowed to help you, he feels valued. Those good feelings make him feel more connected at home and with you. In fact, research shows that kids who help at home dont find this work at all stressful, and actually feel higher levels of happiness. 05.01.2022 . A lot of warnings have been issued for children to stay off social media, specifically Tik Tok, d...ue to a graphic self harm video thats circulating. While we do recommend that parents monitor their children or keep them off the platform, it's a band-aid solution for a long-term issue due to the fact that distressing videos constantly circulate online. Instead we would like to encourage all parents and guardians to -: 1 . Understand that they will most likely use it, whether you understand the appeal or not. Ask them what apps they use, find out why they like those apps. Start a dialogue so you can start understanding why its important to them. The more you understand about it, the more you can stay across it. 2 . If you know what apps theyre using, help them make their profile as secure as possible, whether its TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitch or Reddit (the list is endless). You can do this with the help of this eSafety Commissioner guide: www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/esafety-guide 3 . Be open and willing to listen. Make them aware of Kids Helpline Official (1800 55 1800), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), headspace (headspace.org.au) and Lifeline (13 11 14) so they know they have a place to contact if they dont feel comfortable approaching you. 4 . Kids often create a social media profile that they make visible to you, but keep their actual profile under a fake name hidden from you. Again, this is why we encourage you to talk to your child openly and honestly. 5 . If your child watches YouTube videos, please be aware there's no guarantee that this content will be safe for kids. People can easily edit distressing videos for kids that slip through the filters. If you can't monitor your child on YouTube then let them watch Netflix kids instead as it has stronger filters. SBS and ABC iview are both free alternatives for childrens online content. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner is a great resource for parents, guardians and kids: www.esafety.gov.au

03.01.2022 JOHN MARSDENS TIPS FOR PARENTS 1. Give children space. Back off. Let them roam. Let them be bored. Don't over-plan their lives. Cut way back on the after-scho...ol activities programs. 2. Keep away from all those ghastly, soulless, sterile playgrounds. Keep away from shopping malls. Look for real places. Wild places. 3. Be an adult. Say no to your children at least once a day. If the role of Adult in your family is vacant, then one of your children will fill it. And it won't be pretty. 4. Don't take up all the space. If you are dominating, loud, forceful, your children are highly likely to become passive, lacking spirit and personality and/or sullen. 5. Believe about 40 per cent of the dramatic stories your children tell you of the injustices, corruption and satanic practices happening at school. 6. Teach them empathy. For example, after their jubilant victory celebrations when they win a sporting match, remind them that their jubilation was only possible because someone else the losers have been made to feel awful. 7. Help them develop language skills. Don't finish their sentences for them. Don't correct them when they mispronounce a word they'll work it out sooner or later. Ask them open-ended questions, that need a detailed answer, not Yes/No questions. 8. Make sure they have regular jobs/duties at home and that those jobs are done to a consistently high standard. 9. Don't whinge endlessly about the miseries of your adult life. A lot of children now are fearful about growing up because their parents paint such a grim picture of the awfulness ahead. 10. Teach them to be very wary of people who Absolutely Know the Absolute Truth about Absolutely Everything! The colour of truth is always grey. Extreme positions are for the ignorant. Every creature, every person and every situation is complex. The universe is a wonderful mystery.

02.01.2022 Update 16 June regarding recommencing playgroups at Darlington during COVID-19 Thank you to everyone who has contacted the Centre inquiring about when we will be recommencing playgroups. We have been advised today by the Department for Education that playgroups can recommence from Monday 29th of June.... This means that in effect we will be offering playgroups at Darlington from the being of term 3. That is the week beginning 20th July. Social distancing rules will still apply for adults so this means that to resume playgroups we may need to limit the number of people who can attend at one time. Watch this space for more details to come in the near future.

01.01.2022 Lets nurture this inborn quality.

01.01.2022 Public schools, preschools and children’s centres will reopen to all students on Monday 23 November. While OSHC is able to operate as usual, families should check with their OSHC service whether it will run a service on Monday. We look forward to having children back on Monday!
