23.01.2022 Our Christmas Miracle! This week we have been observing Leap, a 10 month old calf, who was seen on Sunday with a fishhook caught below its left eye and another ...with a sinker weight hooked up at its belly. Leap is our first 4th generation calf belonging to Eclipse, daughter of Levy, grand-daughter of Thin Fin! Thursday last week Leap was seen jumping and living up to its name in the interaction zone, much to the delight of our guests and volunteers. However exciting this may be to watch, we now believe the calf was trying to dislodge the fishing hook as we have seen leaping for this purpose before. We have been in touch with Parks and Wildlife to discuss the situation but needed more footage of the entanglement and injury to decide what to do next. Today (Christmas Eve) we prepared underwater filming in the Interaction Zone here at Koombana Bay. A little after 8am this morning our little Christmas miracle happened...the baby is 'Unhooked'! Eclipse brought Leap in for a visit and we were able to get more underwater footage and see that all hooks, lines and weights are gone. Its very rare that a dolphin manages to dislodge a hook by itself, usually the situation will only get worse. We would like to remind the public to make sure they always remove hooks and fishing lines and dispose of them correctly so our wildlife remains unharmed and doesn't have to suffer from injuries.
