25.01.2022 MITCHAM SUPPORTS STATEWIDE CAT LAWS INCLUDING CURFEW My motion last night passed with a clear majority 9-3 to support a model state-wide cat law under the Dog and Cat Management Act. Heather Holmes-Ross - Mayor of City of Mitcham will now write to David Speirs MP as the responsible Minister to make the request. City of Mitcham already register cats and cap numbers, but a consistent law across all SA councils is needed, including: ... 1. Declare times within which a cat must be in confinement; 2. Wandering at large and attack offences for cats; 3. The trapping of Cats by a Council I heard Minister Spiers on 891ABC this week saying that (like me) he likes cats - but INDOORS ONLY. Evidence of wandering pet cats MAIMING AND KILLING the native wildlife is well known. Just ask Bev Langley at Minton Farm Animal Rescue Centre who has been rescuing injured wildlife for 27 years - like the bronzewing pigeon pictured. Please support her efforts. CALL TO ACTION : Let David Speirs MP know that we want the model cat registration and confinement laws as recommended by the RSPCA and the Animal Welfare League NOW - not in 2022 as is planned. Be NICE - he's a good guy : [email protected] See https://www.rspcasa.org.au/cat-management-laws/ for more

23.01.2022 5G is coming to Blackwood at Hewett Oval, no extra height impact. City of Mitcham staff and residents have pushed back on Telstra to re-design their implementation. Telstra have listened and will now implement super fast 5G without any extra height on the existing pole or headframe. A good outcome and a positive change to the initial proposed works by Telstra that would have seen an increase in the height of the tower of 2.5m or nearly 10%

22.01.2022 PASSED ! CLIMATE ACTION AT MITCHAM - TARGETS & FUNDING ; On our way to nett zero & helping our community to do the same. THIS IS HUGE, it starts the process of turning Council's $60M pa business towards a nett zero destination and flags our clear intention that we will help our community get there as well. Much more detail in the agenda and in more actions to come. A year ago, City of Mitcham declared a Climate Emergency - the 10th SA Council to do so. We now take the next ...step toward Council getting to nett zero AND helping our community to do so by setting measurable, tangible TARGETS and committing new FUNDING for the start of an electric fleet and public car chargers. PASSED 10-3 That Council make the following pledges as measurable, tangible actions towards a commitment to achieving corporate nett zero emissions and assisting our community in mitigating and responding to climate change: 1. Purchase 100% of Council’s energy from renewable sources by 2030 2. Change all streetlights to energy efficient technology by 2030 3. Fund an ambitious and accelerated transition towards Council’s fleet being fully renewables powered by 2030 4. Set targets and fund programs to reduce waste to landfill by 75% both for Councils commercial and domestic waste streams by 2030 5. Adopt sustainable procurement and policies by October 2022 to prioritise low emission products and services and incorporate zero emission design into all new Council buildings AND we further express our intention, to complementing other government and community abatement and resilience actions, such as State and Federal programs, private sector and community level solutions. The role of Council will include: 1. Facilitating access to community renewable-energy and household solar. 2. Educational programs to continue building community climate resilience and adoption of net zero behaviours. 3. Supporting our community transition toward renewables-powered transportation with Council funded demonstration charging points, and Council facilitation of EV infrastructure by the private sector and other governments. 4. Assisting residents with behaviour-change education and resources regarding waste to landfill reduction. 5. Facilitating residents to build new low-energy buildings. Please email [email protected] to express your support, or to get a copy of the relevant part of the agenda. EXCITING ! https://citiespowerpartnership.org.au/what-is-the-partners/

20.01.2022 HAWTHORNDENE OVAL - NEW CRICKET CLUBROOMS ON HOLD TO ALLOW COMMUNITY CONSULTATION I'm pleased to report that staff have advised today : "As a result of concerns raised by members of the community surrounding Hawthorndene Oval at Wednesday’s meeting and legal advice received by administration, the decision has been made to withdraw the DA whilst we work through these community concerns and make updates to the Community Land Management Plan (CLMP). ... This means no further assessment will occur on this development application it is effectively cancelled. If the club seeks to proceed at a future date it will be necessary for a new development application to be lodged at that point in time. ... Moving Forward A report will be presented to Council on the 24 November 2020, presenting options for Council to consider in terms of the review of the Community Land Management Plan for Hawthorndene Oval and proposing community consultation be undertaken in accordance with the Local Government Act, 1999 and Council’s Community Consultation Policy. As part of this report there will be a range of options including the establishment of a forum comprising council staff, residents and cricket club representatives, as well as a commitment to engage the community on the future of Hawthorndene Oval as part of the Community Land Management Plan. If the review of the Community Land Management Plan is adopted by Council, public consultation would commence in February 2021." ---- I was pleased to meet and listen to so many residents at the meeting who, like me clearly want a voice on any future developments at the Oval. I was away from Council on 12 November 2019 when the initial decision was made, so I'm pleased it will be coming back to the chamber. Stay tuned and follow the CLMP process for your say. I have shared a Dropbox folder at http://bit.ly/Hawthorndene-Oval-CLMP where I have put all relevant public documents as they come to hand.
