25.01.2022 Donald (Don) Goode was born in Port Pirie, South Australia, 100 years ago today. In March 1939, Don started flying with Spencers Gulf Aero Club and in July 1939 joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Reserve. In May 1940, Don enlisted with the RAAF and commenced the No 2 Empire Air Training Scheme course. He served with 85 Squadron, 5 Squadron, and 24 Squadron. Don was a pilot and was trained in bombing, strafing, artillery shoots, fighter tactics, night flying, and nav...igation. He flew many planes including the Gypsy Moth, Tiger Moth, Moth Minor, Boomerang, and Kittyhawk P40s. After the war, Don worked with his father-in-law in a successful wool broking business. He and his late wife, Val, were married for 71 years before Val passed away in 2014. Together they raised their five children. Don enjoyed sailing, playing golf and travelling. He credits his long life to family genes, being very active and not smoking. Happy birthday Don and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans
25.01.2022 Legendary Gippslanders... Meet Laura Jonston, who grew up with her two sisters Holly and Marley in Devon North. Last month, Laura made the decision to sign up for the R U OK 100km in August run. She made the decision after losing someone very special in her life and decided she wanted to do something to help take away the stigma surrounding mental health and raise awareness about depression.... Laura and her running partner Amanda started a fundraising page and planned out their running schedule and it wasnt long before friends and family came onboard to support the cause. Laura is the first to admit that she is not a natural runner, in fact up until 12 months ago she hated running and just doing the warmup laps at netball training was a chore. But when she moved to Melbourne for study, she took up football and was selected to play with the Casey Demons in the VFLW, she started to enjoy running. Now with the 100km done and dusted and over $4000 raised, Laura is looking for another challenge to raise awareness about depression and suicide prevention. She has set their sights on a 50km walk, 50km run, and a 100km bike ride. Laura is urging everyone to please check up on friends, family, and neighbours in your local area and her R U OK fundraising page is still open for anyone who would like to donate to this worthwhile cause. You can visit here: https://give.everydayhero.com/au/100kms-in-august Well done Laura and keep up the great work. #lovegippsland

24.01.2022 Putting locals first... One of my great passions is helping young Gippslanders achieve their full potential and that’s why I’m pleased to see Bairnsdale’s ‘virtual university’ officially opened. It’s been a COVID interrupted year but this partnership between the Federal Government, Gippsland East Local Learning Employment Network, Federation University, East Gippsland Shire Council and TAFE Gippsland is creating new pathways to success.... East Gippsland is now home to the Gippsland East Higher Education Study Hub, a space for community and education, located at the former high school site in Dalmahoy Street. The university-like facilities allow East Gippsland students, young and old, to undertake tertiary courses without relocating to study on-campus. There are many barriers to students in regional areas continuing onto tertiary study, not the least of which is the cost of living away from home. This new hub is removing some of those barriers. This virtual university is also helping to address the skills shortage in regional areas by supporting our young people to become qualified to fill jobs in areas of need. Offering video conferencing, high speed internet, the latest podcast and flipchart technology as well as group and private study spaces, the Study Hub is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for registered students. Staff are available between 8.30am and 5pm weekdays. The Gippsland East Higher Education Study Hub is funded with $595,000 from the Federal Government. More information about the hub can be found at www.thehubbairnsdale.org.au/ #lovegippsland
24.01.2022 Each year Australian Government Department of Veterans Affairs creates a range of resources for the Remembrance Day mail out which gets sent out to schools and community groups across Australia. On 15 August we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and this years mail out looks back on the end of this time in our history. This mail out provides a wide range of groups across the country with resources to commemorate our service personnel on Remembrance Day and contribute to the ongoing education about our military history. All resources are free to download on the Anzac Portal: https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/
24.01.2022 AVCAT - Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust manages a range of tertiary education scholarships and bursaries for the children and grandchildren of veterans, including the notable Long Tan Bursary. Sitanan Petcharawan was a recipient of the Long Tan Bursary in 2018. Her late uncle served as a signalman in the Vietnam War and suggested that she apply for a scholarship with AVCAT. ‘At that time, I had so many concerns about my future, and I was under a lot of stress.... But after hearing the news from AVCAT I was chosen to be awarded a Long Tan Bursary I was relieved,’ said Sitanan. She says life offers plenty of opportunities, you just have to reach out and try to seize it. ‘I’m so thankful that I was chosen to be a part of this scholarship. It helps me so much with my finances. I can get textbooks and materials that I need for university.’ For more on Sitanan’s story, visit: https://avcat.org.au/sitanan-petcharawan/
24.01.2022 Today on World Suicide Prevention Day and R U OK Day, I encourage our veteran community to check in with their mates and reach out to friends, families or neighbours to see if theyre okay. These are of some of the assistance dogs in training to support some of our veterans through the Australian Government Department of Veterans Affairs psychiatric assistance dogs program - a program to support veterans managing PTSD. Eye contact from a psychiatric assistance dog is ess...ential when helping their veteran owner, the dogs need to anticipate and respond without command to PTSD symptoms and they do this by looking at and smelling their handlers the entire time. Some other techniques assistance dogs learn in training include nuzzling to aid in calming anxiety and mobility or retrieval such as opening the fridge door to get something for their owner. Having someone to talk to, be it your close network of family or friends, or sharing an incredible bond with a fury friend, can make all the difference when maintaining your overall mental health and wellbeing. If you find you are struggling and dont know who to talk to, you can call our 24/7 free and confidential Open Arms - Veterans & Families Counselling service on 1800 011 046.
23.01.2022 Let's make it a Great Gippsland Christmas. ‘Something for Everyone’ is the tag line Coopers Mitre 10 Owners David and Zoe in Yarram are using on their social media Christmas promotion posts, and it’s not hard to see why! Gardeners, DIYers, BBQ lovers, designers and decorators, indoor plant collectors, tool buffs and kidsthey’ve got it covered. As soon as you walk in the front door, the gift ideas start coming, including good, practical options that will last for years like p...lants, garden tools, outdoor furniture, camping gear and power tools to name just a few. They’ve also got some great ideas for the kids, including junior garden tool sets and watering cans. If you find it all too difficult and can’t decide, there’s always the gift card option. If you’re one to decorate your home, they’ve also got you covered, with an abundance of Christmas lights for outdoor areas. David and Zoe are urging everyone to start shopping now and if you see something you like, don't put off buying it as stock levels of some items are affected by back logs and they may not be able to get more stock before the big day. By shopping locally this Christmas, you are helping Gippsland businesses, like Coopers Mitre 10, recover from what has been a horrible year. #lovegippsland See more
23.01.2022 Rach Ranton joined the Australian Army in 1997 straight after she finished Year 12. In the years that followed she worked as an Electronic Warfare Operator, responsible for intercepting and analysing enemy communications and giving advice on the battlefield. Transitioning from the Army in 2008, Rach struggled with her sense of identity. Building a new life outside of the military took time, but for Rach the first step was finding meaningful employment, beginning a career in ...the unknown world of banking. With a successful transition behind her, Rach has a wealth of advice to share. Read her story here: www.veteransemployment.gov.au//trying-something-new-and-th. #VeteransEmployment #TYFYS #OurVeterans
22.01.2022 I join with the Prime Minister in condemning the falsified image of an Australian soldier that was posted by an official Chinese Government Twitter account. The fake image is deeply offensive and grossly misrepresents the Australian Defence Force. It is an unwarranted slur against the two million Australians who have worn the uniform of the Navy, Army or Air Force with pride, and served with great distinction. Australians are justifiably proud of our veterans, our current ser...ving personnel, and the families who support them in their service. They have kept us safe in wars and the darkest of days; served on peacekeeping missions; and rushed to help millions during humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions. We are blessed as a nation to have a culture of service above self which has seen so many Australians volunteer to help others. I encourage all Australians to stand with our veterans and with our ADF personnel today in the face of this offensive action. Please show them your support. If you are a Defence member, a veteran, or one of the many families that support them, please know that support is available if you are impacted by media coverage of recent events. For all current Australian Defence Force members and their families, the Defence all-hours Support Line is a confidential telephone and online service and is available on 1800 628 036. And for all current and former ADF members, and their families, Open Arms provides 24-hour free and confidential counselling and support on 1800 011 046. Open Arms also has support available through SafeZone and when you call, it is up to you how much or how little personal information you share. This is available on 1800 142 072. #TYFYS
22.01.2022 Happy birthday to Elva Batt (nee Baikie) is celebrating turning 100 years old today. Elva was born in Marrickville, Sydney, and enlisted in the Australian Army in October 1941. Originally a Voluntary Aid, she later joined the Australian Army Medical Womens Service (AAMWS) and was posted to 113th Australian General Hospital at Concord. Before attending training school, Elva was a sergeant working as a clerk in the orderly room. Once she completed the training, she was promot...ed to lieutenant (and later captain). In October 1943, she became an amenities officer with the AAMWS. After postings in Western Australia and Darwin, Elva was transferred to Melbourne Headquarters near the end of the war to oversee the disbanding of the AAMWS. Elva was discharged in June 1946 with the rank of captain. She advises younger serving members to value the friendships you make as youll always have a special bond with those friends that cant be found elsewhere. After the war, in 1946, Elva married Barry Batt and they raised two children. Elva worked as a para-legal and when she retired, she and Barry became volunteers for many organisations. She was president of the ex-AAMWS Association of NSW for eight years. She credits her longevity to good genes, a healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude. Happy birthday Elva and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans
21.01.2022 Heres our chance to complete the set... drought, fire, flood and a pandemic in the same 12 months! It looks like we will be having a wetter spring than usual and that could mean flooding in parts of Gippsland. The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a wet end to 2020 for the eastern part of the country, including Gippsland. October is predicted to be particularly wet with the very likely chance of above average rainfall. The BOM has also predicted a 70% chance of La Nia f...orming in the last quarter of 2020. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) index has been sitting in the negative for the last few weeks, which in combination with La Nia increases the likelihood of above average rainfall throughout spring. Lets just hope it arrives in moderation and helps our region, rather than hinders our recovery activities. Pix credit: Bureau of Meteorology #lovegippsland
20.01.2022 While the Yarram Show may have been cancelled this year, members of the Yarram Ag Society are excited about their new Exhibition Shed which is finally underway. With the framework now complete, after the roof trusses were craned into place on Wednesday morning, Yarram Ag Society members are looking forward to the wall cladding and roof iron going up in the coming days. Yarram Ag Society secured a $250,000 grant from the Federal Government back in April last year. It took a lo...ng time to get all the paperwork finalised in readiness for work to commence, but now members of the Ag Society can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Their new shed replaces the 100-year-old structure which was falling down around their ears. The new exhibition shed will include kitchen and bathroom facilities as well as a main exhibition hall where needle work, art and craft, photography and cooking exhibits will be showcased when the Yarram Show returns next year. The exhibition shed will also available to other community groups throughout the year. The Yarram and District Adult Riders will now have space for their equipment after securing a $23,000 grant from the Latrobe Valley Authority to add another 15metres x 7 metres to the existing shed plans. Local builders and tradies have been engaged to carry out the work on this project and everyone is excited to watch the progress! #lovegippsland
20.01.2022 Today, on National Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Day, we say thank you for your service to all Australians who have served during peacekeeping operations. From the first mission as part of the UN operation in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) between 1947 and 1951 to current peacekeeping deployments throughout the world, Australia has been involved in more than 50 peacekeeping operations. The Australian Defence Force and Australias police services have formed a crucial p...art of the nations peacekeeping efforts around the world. In their duties as peacekeepers and peacemakers, they have played a restorative role in helping countries after they have been devastated by war. This Australian War Memorial photograph was taken in 1992 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Leading Aircraftwoman (LACW) Kylie Kiddle of Townsville, Queensland, and Corporal Mick Hicklin of Watsonia from Victoria are working at the Communications Centre at HQ United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). LACW Kiddle is one of twenty Royal Australian Air Force personnel who served with the 500-strong Australian military communications contingent to the UN peacekeeping operation in Cambodia. #TYFYS Learn more about Australias peacekeeping history: anzacportal.dva.gov.au/wars-and-missions/peacekeeping
20.01.2022 Seven cygnets swimming... biggest family Ive spotted on the lakes this September. We had a cloudy day in Lakes Entrance but perfect for running. As I reached the 9km mark this little chalk message brought a smile to my face! Thanks to whomever took the time. We will get through these challenging times. #lovegippsland
20.01.2022 Putting locals first... I remember mum and dad buying my first tennis racquet for me as a birthday present from Howard and Schubacks in Sale, 40 years ago. Both Garys have retired but the Intersport store continues to cater for a wide range of sporting needs. And this week, I picked up a birthday present for my son... a tennis racquet! ... Thanks to Chris and the team for continuing to provide great service and finding ways to get new stock in store during these difficult times. Apparently people have been buying plenty of active wear to keep fit in isolation! #lovegippsland
19.01.2022 Did you know Australia needs 31,000 blood donations each week? And your generous donation can help save someones life. Ive visited Papua New Guinea in the past 12 months so they cant use my blood at the moment but I can still donate plasma. The Red Cross team in Traralgon told me they can use my plasma in 18 different ways from protecting people with brain and nerve diseases, to treating serious burns and cancer. If youre like me and have given blood or plasma infrequentl...y over the years, why not try to make it a more regular habit? I made a deal with myself while I was on the chair to become a more consistent donor, not just a couple of times a year. I know my work can get a bit hectic, but not too busy to help save a life. A fit and healthy person, who hasnt been overseas in the past 28 days can give blood as often as every 12 weeks and you can donate plasma more regularly. And theres absolutely no truth in the rumour that the only reason I donated plasma was to get a free Four n Twenty sausage roll from the friendly Red Cross team! To find out more about how you can help, check out www.donateblood.com.au or call 131495. #lovegippsland
19.01.2022 It was recently brought to my attention that through the Aussies & Kiwis for ANZACs page that Franois Berthout has been researching and sharing our Australian experience on the Western Front during the First World War all the way from his home in France. Franois posts are carefully researched and include a remarkable degree of information about our veterans and illustrates our two countries shared history. I asked the staff at the Sir John Monash Centre to make contact wi...th Franois to thank him for his work and commitment to commemorating the Australian story. Today, Caroline Bartlett, Director of the SJMC presented Franois a beautifully boxed collectors edition of the book Youre Home Mate. Australians on the Western Front in the First World War, as well as the official medallion of the Sir John Monash Centre. This continues a long history of respect and admiration between our two countries, forged during the First World War. Thank you Franois I know your posts have meant a great deal to many people, and will continue to do so.
19.01.2022 Happy belated birthday to Albert (Bert) Dunner, born in Boort, Victoria, 100 years ago yesterday. While Bert didnt enlist to serve in the defence force, in 2005 he was recognised as a veteran for his services during WWII and was ranked a warrant officer. For 10 months in 1942 and 1943, Bert worked on the SS Mernoo laying telecommunication cables from New Guinea to Cape York in dangerous war-time conditions. Bert was being escorted by the Royal Australian Navy to Port Moresby... when attacked by a Japanese submarine, which was destroyed in the ensuing action. Bert felt the best thing about this time was the friendships he made and spending a month in Port Moresby waiting for a decision on where the cable should start. While he was there he mixed with the local people and learned how to cook and assisted with their building projects. Bert was initially apprenticed as a builder, so he had a number of skills to share. Bert credits his long life to a very happy marriage, being surrounded by his family and eating ice-cream and sweets. Happy birthday Bert and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans
19.01.2022 Legendary Gippslanders... and some happy news to end the week! Arch and his daughter Leree from Van Berkels Wholesale Nursery in Traralgon have donated more than $25,000 worth of well-established trees to the fire-affected communities of Sarsfield, Clifton Creek, Buchan, Wairewa and Mallacoota. Theyve worked with GIVIT, Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund and Ingers Transport of Traralgon to distribute the trees to these very grateful communities. Thank you and well done.... #lovegippsland
18.01.2022 This map in todays Herald Sun graphically explains why parts of regional Victoria have earned the right to re-open more businesses with COVID-safe plans right now. There are vast areas of regional Victoria with zero or very few active cases but the ongoing harsh restrictions are destroying livelihoods and compromising the mental health of business owners and their staff, across the state. Its about getting the balance right and unfortunately, the pendulum has swung too far ...towards restrictions, with not enough understanding of the way small communities could operate safely to support local jobs and the mental health of the region. This week I met with representatives of the restaurant, catering, hospitality and hotel industries, as well as speaking to the owners of local pubs, coffee shops and restaurants. The message is clear. If we dont get more businesses open soon with COVID-safe plans, they will not reopen at all. They will not be able to retain staff who are looking to move to destinations where work is available and without cashflow, they cant pay the other fixed costs like insurance, rent, energy bills and business loans. As I said earlier in the week, no-one is talking about open slather. They want a responsible re-opening with all the rules around hand sanitisers, social distancing, face coverings where appropriate and customer limits for sit down dining but businesses cant wait for mythical targets which lump Gippsland into the same category as Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong. Its complete rubbish to claim that its too hard and we cant have different rules in different regions. All it would take is a requirement that people attending a local pub for a sit down meal, demonstrate with photo ID that they live locally. If the owners of the establishment have any doubts, they have the right to refuse entry. Keep in mind, in most of the communities with low case numbers, the local business owners know their customers by name and any visitor breaking the Melbourne lockdown would be refused service. This putting locals first approach to restore more local economic activity would sustain locals jobs and improve the mental wellbeing of our community. Its an important step to getting us back to where we want to be in the coming months and recognises we are going to have to live with the virus until a vaccination is developed. Please dont misinterpret what Im saying. Im not underestimating the threat of the coronavirus and if a local breakout occurs, we would need to take the actions weve seen in NSW with deep cleaning, contact tracing and lockdowns as required. But the restrictions we are living with right now in areas with low case numbers are doing more unnecessary damage every day to our regional communities, and its time a risk-based approach was used to allow more businesses in the safer areas do reopen for local trade. What do you think? #lovegippsland
18.01.2022 Putting locals first... Morning tea done right with a box of special-order biscuits stamped with my favourite hashtag #lovegippsland and Shop Local, Support Local slogan. Now, more than ever, it is important we support local businesses and their efforts to find new ways to serve their customers while pandemic restrictions are in force.... By shopping locally, whether in person or online, and choosing local service providers, you are supporting local jobs. I encourage everyone to do what they can to help local businesses to get through this tough period and help the local economy emerge from the lockdown in the best shape possible. The biscuits were made by Katya Askew of Katyas Kookies in Traralgon. Personalised sugar cookies can be ordered by direct messaging katyaskookies_ on Instagram. #lovegippsland #myvalley
18.01.2022 Sadie Gow (nee Masters), born in Hobart, Tasmania, celebrates her 100th birthday today. In February 1942, Sadie joined the Australian Army and some of her work involved signals and mapping. In 1946, after the war, Sadie married Sydney Gow. Sydney was an intelligence gatherer and coastwatcher with ‘M’ Special Unit. He was awarded the British Empire Medal for his services in New Guinea.... Sadie and Sydney raised three daughters together. Sadie has always worked hard. She was employed at the local council and the Blood Bank, delivering blood all around Tasmania. Sadie has done a lot of voluntary work including for St John’s, taking donations on the streets for Multiple Sclerosis and delivering books to people in hospital. Sadie and Sydney developed a lot of friendships while serving, and after Sydney retired, they drove up the east coast of Australia and stayed with all the friends they had met. Sadie credits her long life to working hard, voluntary work, enjoying an active social life, maintaining the house and garden, and also eating very healthy food, a lot of which was homegrown. Happy birthday Sadie and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans
17.01.2022 The transformation of the Esplanade in Lakes Entrance is moving up a gear with work starting on the final stage between Myer St and Carpenter St. Its been a long process with massive improvements to the highway, pedestrian safety and the shared pathway which will benefit locals and visitors to the region for years to come. The challenge once this work is finished will be to restore economic activity and get all of our small towns like Lakes Entrance firing again. The Esplana...de work is part of the $50 million I secured as Transport Minister in 2016 to upgrade the Princes Highway east with partnership funding between Federal and State Governments. The East Gippsland Shire Council has also taken the opportunity to undertake improvements at the same time so the end result will be worth the wait. Theres been local jobs during construction and Im optimistic that more businesses will be able to re-establish themselves as people see the opportunity to live, work and raise a family in our region. My prediction: The coronavirus will lead to more Victorians choosing regional holiday destinations; more families choosing to live outside the capital city; and more retirees choosing Gippsland towns in the future. We need to be ready with good infrastructure to connect our towns and the entire region. #lovegippsland
17.01.2022 Works have begun to install a new flagpole at Traralgon Post Office. There’s been a few hurdles along the way for Australia Post but they have managed to get the new flag pole installed ahead of Remembrance Day tomorrow. Well done to Noelene Belottie and the team at Australia Post for ensuring that we have a new flagpole in the heart of Traralgon CBD. #lovegippsland #myvalley
17.01.2022 At last some good news for local businesses and local jobs. Like probably every other hospitality business in Gippsland, the team at Portside in Sale had the tape measure out straight away to sort out what todays welcome news will mean for them. From midnight tomorrow (Wednesday 16/9), the Premier has announced that regional Victoria will move to the so-called Third Step of the state governments coronavirus road to recovery. 16.01.2022 Let’s make it a Great Gippsland Christmas. I’ve got a feeling this will be the last time my old mate Steve puts his feet up for a few weeks! His Aussie Disposals store in Main Street, Bairnsdale has everything you need for the outdoors lover in your life. Steve and his team pride themselves on friendly, personalised service and they have a great range of camping equipment, clothing, swags, sleeping bags, and the list goes on.... Steve wants to thank all his loyal customers for their support during the pandemic - they stayed open and managed to trade successfully during a difficult time. It’s just another great example of putting locals first and supporting local jobs. Well done Steve. #lovegippsland
16.01.2022 Work has started to digitise more than 650,000 Second World War service records and this morning I visited the Project Digitisation Centre at the National Archives of Australia s Preservation Facility to see the amazing work staff are doing for myself. World War II service records are among the most popular of the National Archives’ collection and the work underway will allow more and more records to be accessible free of charge to the public. This work will allow current and... future generations to learn about their family’s military history and the role our nation played in the largest global conflict of the 20th century. The Australian Government committed $10 million to this vital project following the successful digitisation of World War I records, and it is hoped all records will be digitised by 2023. As we approach Remembrance Day, there is no better time to reflect on the service and sacrifice of the around one million Australians who served at home and abroad during Second World War. #TYFYS
15.01.2022 I love summer because it means catching up with family and friends, evening barbecues, beach visits, and hopefully a bit of time to relax and read some books I’ve been planning to get to all year! It’s going to be a warm one across Gippsland with the first day of summer today. As the weather warms up it’s the perfect time to take a break in Gippsland and explore everything our great region has to offer. Gippsland is home to many wonderful beaches and waterways including the... iconic Gippsland Lakes and 90 Mile Beach. Our Gippsland lifesavers are getting ready for another busy summer, when we see many locals and visitors coming to our beaches and holiday towns. It’s the surf lifesavers watching over us as we swim and have fun in the water. But it’s everyone’s responsibility to play it safe by the water, look after each other and only swim between the flags. If you are camping by rivers and creeks, please keep an eye on each other and look after your mates. Conditions can change from year to year and it’s important to check before entering the water. Stay safe everyone and have a great summer! #lovegippsland

You can head down the road a little and youll find the Yinnar General Store, a family run business providing a range of household essentials and a beautiful range of local handmade gifts (including soaps which I added to Julies birthday present). A big congratulations to Matt and Merrin on the birth of little Maple this week! Both Yinnar General Store and Caf 3869 provide old fashioned customer service. By putting locals first and shopping locally we are all doing our little bit to support local jobs. Keep looking after each other. #lovegippsland #myvalley

14.01.2022 Tomorrow, we mark National Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Day and this weeks #OurVeterans story is that of Kris Milne, who has just taken up a volunteer position with the Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans Association. Kris watched his grandfather and uncle serve as police officers as a youngster and knew that when he was old enough, he wanted to serve. Seeing my family and how they make a difference and the purpose that they had, I really wanted to instil that in... myself. So when it came time, Kris enlisted as an Infantry soldier with the Australian Army. After serving in East Timor three times, and dedicating 13 years to the ADF, Kris came to the decision it was time to leave the Army to concentrate more energy on his growing family. Kris first worked at a start-up company, where skills he learnt during his service came in handy. He now works at a recruitment company Effective People, and uses these skills on a daily basis. While his family and friends were a massive support during his transition, Kris says being active in the sporting community has made a huge difference in his success. While they didnt know, the football clubs Ive been involved in were providing a support, allowing me to be a leader at those football clubs really helped me. Kriss advice to other transitioning veterans? Not knowing whats next can be very frightening, but the only way to overcome that fear is make the unknown known. So take the leap of faith, realise that there are organisations and people out there that can help you. Thank you for your service, Kris. #TYFYS
14.01.2022 My opinion piece in todays Age newspaper proposes a better approach to protecting lives and livelihoods in regional areas, rather than blanket lockdowns. Every job matters and I will be working towards a more reasonable approach for Gippslanders. #lovegippsland
14.01.2022 Let’s make it a Great Gippsland Christmas. This year has presented plenty of challenges but we’ve stuck together as Gippslanders and we’re approaching the finish line in better shape than most parts of the world. Thanks everyone for your good humour, hard work and determination to make Gippsland an even better place to live, work and visit. As the countdown to Christmas Day begins, I will be promoting Gippsland businesses every day until Santa visits.... I'll be putting locals first, and supporting those businesses that support our community. By shopping locally, taking a break in Gippsland and using local service providers, you're helping to support local jobs. You can join my 'Great Gippsland Christmas' campaign by nominating your own business, or your favourite local business for some Christmas shopping, to be featured on my social media. All you need to do is send some photos and 10-second videos of your local business, maybe some of the staff and some products, so I can feature it and spread the word about the fantastic options Gippsland has for Christmas shopping this year. Email photos and short videos to [email protected] with a few words about your business, or your favourite business. I love Gippsland and together, let's make it a Great Gippsland Christmas! #lovegippsland #myvalley

13.01.2022 It was great to address some of Gippslands up and coming leaders today. While I would normally catch up with the Gippsland Community Leadership Group (GCLP) cohort on their annual Parliament House trip, this year we discussed the many challenges we have faced in 2020 via Zoom. I enjoyed sharing my thoughts on leadership, some of my own journey, where Gippsland is headed post coronavirus, the continued efforts in bushfire recovery in East Gippsland and the need for regional a...reas to stand up for themselves when it comes to getting accessible services and amenities. GCLP is doing some great work throughout the community and I look forward to seeing their projects take shape throughout the region. #lovegippsland
13.01.2022 The transition from service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to civilian life can present unique challenges, but as veteran Heath Smith describes, what comes hand-in-hand with those challenges are exciting opportunities. As ADF members, we often don’t realise the value and rarity of the foundation skills and experiences we develop, such as complex problem solving, teamwork, communication, operational design, resource management and leadership. Heath is now a business ow...ner and consultant working alongside other veterans and helping many clients in the defence community. While he has found success, he says the transition wasn’t as easy as he expected, but he is thankful for his support network including his family and friends, and ADF and veteran communities. After 18 years’ working and living in the unique ADF environment it took significant effort and reflection to adapt the way I did things to suit my new environment. The biggest challenge without a doubt has been replacing the sense of purpose that ADF service naturally provides. I had to work and reflect hard on what it was that would provide that sense of personal and professional satisfaction for me. I eventually found it in the unique support we provide our clients (some of whom are from the Defence and Emergency Services Sectors) and our staff (some of whom are veterans themselves). I was very fortunate to be surrounded by exceptionally talented and experienced people who I learned from every day to build upon my previous experiences and refine my professional approach to new challenges. I haven’t met a veteran yet who isn’t interested in helping others succeed. It remains really important for me to maintain contact and connection with my friends in the ADF who I hope will be friends for life. When asked what he would tell others transitioning from the ADF to civilian life, Heath provided some encouragement, saying, ‘talk with as many people as you can about their transition experience to help inform your own individual approach, and keep an open mind to altering your plan as you learn more about your chosen career and environment. Don’t be afraid to start again or to try multiple things before settling on what suits you best. Each experience you have will bring you closer to what is right for you. #OurVeterans #TYFYS
13.01.2022 Born in Laceby, Grimsby in the United Kingdom, Edward (Gordon) Pawson OAM is celebrating his 100th birthday today. Gordon enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force in January 1941 and was a leading aircraftman stationed in Darwin. He recalls being blown out of bed when the first bombs were dropped on the Darwin Post Office. Gordon developed some great friendships while serving and one mate was best man at his wedding who also went into an auto electrician partnership with ...him after the war. In 2000, Gordon was awarded an OAM for services to archery and Camp Quality and continued to compete in archery until well into his 90s. In his 80s, he ran a leg of the 2000 Olympic baton relay. Happy birthday Gordon and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans
10.01.2022 Our beautiful capital as weve never seen it, set to a haunting yet uplifting rendition of Meet Me In The Middle Of The Air by George Stirling of the Australian Boys Choir. Hopefully we will never see Melbourne so deserted again in our lifetimes. Tissue alert. This song was written by Australias great storyteller Paul Kelly and is all about love and hope. Better days are coming!
10.01.2022 Happy birthday to Milton Alderson, born in Mayfield, NSW, 100 years ago today. Milton enlisted in the Australian Army in November 1942. He was a driver/mechanic and served in New Guinea, Fraser Island, Halmahera Island, Morotai Island, and on the Cape York Peninsula. Milton recalls that being stationed in the north brought many risks. Apart from the bombings by the Japanese, there was also the possibility of coming across crocodiles and snakes. He remembers the driving condi...tions being very rugged especially when entering the creeks ‘where you could not see the bottom of the creek bed to see if there were any wash-a-ways or deep holes’. One of the most rewarding experiences for Milton was the rescuing of downed pilots. He also recalls a time when he was fined three pounds for being AWOL to go and visit his mum. Milton says the best thing about serving was the mateship, excitement and adventure. Some of the friendships he made lasted a lifetime. Milton’s CO was best man at his wedding and the friendship remained until he passed away. Milton advises younger serving members to learn all they can and maintain friendships. After the war, Milton drove trucks for a timber company, drove trains for Lysaghts, and finished his working life at the printing section of the Water Board. Milton credits his long life to hard work, long hours, a good supportive family and the occasional black beer. Happy birthday Milton and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans
10.01.2022 Happy 100th birthday to Alexander (Alex) Gow who was born in Barry, Scotland on 30 November 1920. As a youngster Alex had a tough life in Scotland. He was mostly left to fend for himself while his mother was away housekeeping. At age six, he would rise at 4.30am (snow and all) to help the local milkman who had a horse and cart. He was given a billy of milk a day. Alex still loves milk and credits it with giving him strong bones. He worked as a ploughman when he became a teena...ger and migrated to Australia in 1938 where he worked many jobs to survive. Alex joined the Australian Army in December 1942 and served as a gunner in New Guinea with the 7th Australian Infantry Battalion. Alex valued the mateship while serving. After the war, Alex started a saw doctor business in Toowoomba which also sold Pope motor mowers and Kawasaki motorbikes. He sold his successful business and turned his hand to selling real estate. Alex returned to Scotland, but after some time decided to make Australia his permanent home. Alex credits his longevity to ‘a nip of good quality scotch every day, hard work and healthy eating’. Happy birthday Alex and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans
10.01.2022 This is Charmian Gladstone (nee Prendergast) and today she turns 100 years old. Charmian worked at Bletchley Park during the Second World War, decoding and encrypting messages. During the war she also married Australian Naval Officer GV Gladstone, who would go on to become Rear Admiral, Deputy Chief Of Navy. Congratulations on reaching such a milestone. 10.01.2022 Creating long term and sustainable local jobs is an ongoing challenge and I always enjoy seeing the ways in which Gippsland businesses are innovating, especially with locally sourced products. Renewable Wood Pellets in Morwell takes a waste product from timber mills and turns it into wood pellets that can be used for a range of purposes including pellet heaters and animal beds. It’s a 100% Australian Made and environmentally sustainable product from plantation timber. Genera...l Manger Paul Griffin gave me a tour of the facility and showed me the potential for further expansion of this manufacturing business. This project was assisted with a Federal Government grant from the RJIP Program to help support and create local jobs. #lovegippsland #myvalley

09.01.2022 Ordinary Seamen Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean did something extraordinary 78 years ago. In the face of a Japanese aerial attack and after being given the order to abandon ship, Teddy went back to one of the ship's guns, strapped himself in and did what he could do to protect his mates. Teddy was 18 and he died in an act of true heroism during the Second World War that saved the lives of many of his fellow sailors. Today he will receive our highest military honour, the Victoria Cross... for Australia. He is the first Royal Australian Navy sailor to be awarded the VC, and by receiving this honour it will ensure his story of mateship, endurance, courage and sacrifice lives on for generations to come. Today, Teddy’s family will see a long campaign come to fruition and it will no doubt be a moment they, and the many people who worked so hard to see Teddy receive this award, will cherish. This is a proud day for our Navy, our Australian Defence Force and the Australian people. BZ Teddy and thank you for your service.
09.01.2022 Happy birthday to Keith Grant, born in Armidale, NSW, 100 years ago today. Keith enlisted with the Australian Army in October 1941. He originally joined the 15th Light Horse, then transferred to the 12th Light Horse Signal Troop based in Armidale. Keith transferred to 1st Machine Gun Regiment, Royal NSW Lancers when the Light Horse was being replaced by mechanised units. He also served with 1st Australian Armoured Regiment, AIF (Royal NSW Lancers), Australian Army Tank Brigad...e Signals, and Signals 4th Australian Armoured Brigade. Keith was stationed in Milne Bay, Morobe, and Finschafen, (Papua and New Guinea) and Balikpapan (Borneo). While in Borneo, Keith was involved in the destruction of the Shell oil refinery. Keith felt the best part of serving was the training camp activities in Australia and the comradeship developed while serving overseas. He has some advice for current serving personnel ‘remain active mentally and physically, maintain friendships and take care of yourself’. After the war, Keith held a variety of jobs. He completed an apprenticeship at the Sydney Morning Herald, then, after several years, purchased a small farm and became a market gardener. He ran a dairy herd husbandry program for the CSIRO for a period, followed by employment in real estate and was also an owner of several taxis. Keith credits his long life to good genes, keeping fit, eating well, pursuing hobbies, being happy and keeping stress to a minimum Happy birthday Keith and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans
08.01.2022 This is Sapper Frederick Mitchells official commemoration. Sapper Mitchell is one of the 493 service personnel who were laid to rest at the Perth War Cemetery. During the Second World War, he served with the 22nd Field Company. As a sapper, his job involved engineering tasks such as placing and clearing mines, demolitions, field defences, and building roads, bridges and airfields. Sadly, Sapper Mitchell died during the war at age 31, on 9 September in 1943, and was interred... in Perth War Cemetery. The Perth War Cemetery was formed by the Australian Army in 1942, and handed over to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in 1949. The cemetery is now cared for by the Office of Australian War Graves as part of the ongoing commitment to commemorate all those who died in active duty or as a result of their military service in perpetuity. 08.01.2022 Even before the Reserve call-out in January, Australian Army Corporal Amy Broham had put her hand up to be part of #OpBushfireAssist. The South Australian high school teacher and mother of two wanted to contribute and help the local community in the wake of catastrophic bushfires. I wanted to put my military skills and training to use. For me, the opportunity to help was one I couldn’t overlook. ... The 9th Combat Services Support Battalion Section Commander deployed to Kangaroo Island with more than 700 other ADF Reserve and full-time members to support local authorities. Seeing my fellow soldiers giving everything they had to the effort was an incredible show of what we can do as reservists and as human beings in a time of need. The smiles on the faces of people as we delivered water to fill their tanks and dams, or fodder for their stock, was unforgettable. Amy recently had the opportunity to reunite with Kangaroo Island Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bob Teasdale, and some of the rescued koalas in support of Defence’s Employer Support Awards. I am really lucky to be supported by my civilian employer to fulfil my reserve service. It is a fantastic part time career with endless personal and professional opportunities. #YourADF #TYFYS #OurPeople
08.01.2022 Legendary Gippslander It’s been a tough year for 17-year-old, Tom Rankcom from Traralgon South after almost losing his life. Tom was enjoying an exercise class with his mother, Carolynne and brother, Charlie when he went into cardiac arrest.... Fortunately that there was an off-duty MICA paramedic in front of him in the class and rushed to his side to perform CPR and a trainer pulled a defibrillator from the wall. The quick thinking of the other gym-goers meant that he survived through the condition that only one in 10 Australians survive. Tom was originally taken to Latrobe Regional Hospital where he was later flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Doctors found blood clots and fluid on his heart and Tom was put on life support in a critical condition for two weeks. Nine weeks later, Tom returned home from hospital with a new implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) installed. The Gippsland Grammar student recently finished year 12 and with exams just around the corner he hopes to become a nurse or paramedic. What an incredible young man, with an amazing story, good luck with your exams Tom and wishing you all the best for the future. Pix credit: Herald Sun and Carolynne Rankcom. #lovegippsland #myvalley
06.01.2022 Its almost done... the new viewing platform at Kalimna is having the finishing touches added this week and hopefully it will be open to the public very soon. I was lucky enough to bump into one of the workers and receive an escorted tour of the site which offers a commanding view across the Gippsland Lakes to Bass Strait. This is a project Ive been passionate about for years and it wouldnt have happened without East Gippsland Shire Council successfully applying for funds f...rom the Federal Government. The next stage of works will be on top of Jemmys Point where the Council has developed concept plans which have been released for community feedback. Providing quality infrastructure to complement our natural attractions across Gippsland is critical to grow the visitor economy and support local jobs. Theres a lot of unrealised potential in our region and we need to work in partnership with all levels of government to get more of these projects across the line. The Kalimna project was managed by EGSC and completed by Albcon (civil works), Two Two Australia (steel and timber), Phil Lind (lighting) and Browns Pilings. #lovegippsland
06.01.2022 Well done to all the successful candidates in the East Gippsland Shire Council election. Kirsten Van Diggele Mendy Urie Sonia Buckley Arthur Allen... Trevor Stow Jane Greacen John White Tom Crook Mark Reeves There are plenty of new faces and I wish them all the best as we work together to recover from the bushfires and deliver long term results for the region. I also take the opportunity to thank former Councillors for their efforts and recognise the unsuccessful candidates who missed out this time. It was a hotly contested election and I urge all successful Councillors to put aside any differences they may have had during the campaign and unite to represent the municipality. There’s still a lot of work to be done. #lovegippsland
05.01.2022 Legendary Gippslanders Congratulations to TAFE Gippsland’s Timber Training Unit Manager, Kevin Nunn who won Victorian Teacher/Trainer of the Year. The award is not only recognition for Kevin’s work as a timber trainer within TAFE but also a hardworking community recovery leader following the East Gippsland fires. 05.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, and we will pause our busy lives to pay our respects to our fallen men and women who have given their lives in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. It’s an opportunity for a grateful nation to stand beside our service personnel, our veterans and their families, and say thank you for your service. Lest we forget.
05.01.2022 Obviously it was a lot of fun to take my first trip in a PC-21 when I joined the Roulettes for the afternoon. But the serious side of the experience was the insights I gained as Minister for Veteran’s Affairs and Defence Personnel. Getting a first hand understanding of the training requirements, the workload, pressure and physical impacts of preparing and then flying the aircraft helps me as I do my Parliamentary job to support our serving members, veterans and their families.... Just getting kitted up to fly, having a medical examination, then getting into the aircraft, and feeling the G-forces during manoeuvres was physically tiring... and I was just a passenger! It’s why we need our defence force personnel to be physically and mentally prepared for their jobs and constantly training to be at the top of their game. We have a world-class defence force and I was impressed with the professionalism, skill and dedication of the entire team who made my flight possible. Oh, and it was seriously good fun for someone who grew up loving carnival rides at the Sale Show and theme park thrill rides on the Gold Coast! Thanks to the team as East Sale RAAF Base who made it possible... the PC21 is a magnificent aircraft and we’re proud to host Defence’s basic flight training in Gippsland. #lovegippsland
04.01.2022 Congratulations to the Councillors elected to represent Latrobe City. Graeme Middlemiss Tracie Lund Melissa Ferguson Kellie O'Callaghan... Dan Clancey Dale Harriman Darren Howe Sharon Gibson Bradley Law Great to see some experienced Councillors returned and welcome in a few new faces as well. I'd like to also acknowledge the outgoing Councillors who have committed many years to the community and worked to improve Latrobe City. Commiserations to candidates who missed out but thank you for having the courage to nominate, and be part of the democratic process. I look forward to working with Latrobe City Council to continue delivering fantastic community infrastructure and projects for everyone living in Latrobe City. #lovegippsland #myvalley See more

03.01.2022 People often ask me why I like to run, so on National RUOK Day, I will try to explain it. Firstly, its good for my physical health and if you like food as much as me, you have to burn those calories off somehow but its also part of my mental health plan. I like seeing a town or a city come to life as I run because its normally in the early morning. I dont listen to music because I enjoy the sounds of the birds, the ocean, the wind and the rhythm of my breathing. The early... morning light is often spectacular. After a run, I often feel a little bit of pride that Ive made an effort and it seems like Ive got a head-start on the day because Ive had time to think ahead and plan my priorities. Some of my best ideas have come to me when Im running (although my family and staff may question whether those ideas were as good as I thought at the time!). Finally, Im a better person to be around when Im exercising regularly. Ive noticed I can become grumpier, disinterested and less patient during the times when Im not running. So theres no question it helps my state of mind. National RUOK Day is a reminder to check in on your family and friends and listen to what they have to say. Mental health issues are real but the good news is they can often be treated. If you are feeling anxious, depressed and isolated, remember that help is available. There is no shame in reaching out and getting the support you need. Take care of each other and have a great day. This pix was from Lake Guthridge in Sale at 7.15am... looks like being a perfect spring day. #lovegippsland
03.01.2022 Works are continuing along Tarwin Street and Commercial Road as part of the Morwell Revitalisation project. There has been extensive work along Commercial Road and Tarwin Street over the past 12 months to create a more pedestrian-friendly central business area. The new gathering space on Tarwin Street is taking shape with the installation of the shade structure, Hub of the Valley feature paving and caf seating. The completion of another two parklets gives pedestrians addit...ional places to sit and greenery to enjoy. The Federal Government committed $1.75 million as part of the Regional Jobs and Investment Packages program and is working in partnership with Latrobe City Council, which is also managing the project. #lovegippsland #myvalley
03.01.2022 Calling all photographers... Its that time again the #lovegippsland 2021 calendar competition is now open for entries. This years theme Colours of Gippsland is about capturing the colours of our region, whether man-made or natural. Taking the photographs may be a little more difficult this year due to coronavirus restrictions, but I am confident the standard will be as high as it has been in past years.... The project helps to bring more visitors to Gippsland to support local business and is also a timely reminder for locals about the amazing opportunities that exist right here in our backyard. To enter, go to www.darrenchester.com.au and follow the link to upload your photo. Entries close on Thursday, October 15 at 5pm. 02.01.2022 Congratulations to William (Bill) Tregenna who turns 100 today. Bill was born in Enfield, Victoria, on 15 September 1920. In May 1941, Bill enlisted in the Australian Army and served in Bougainville, New Guinea with 133 General Transport Company. He was a transport driver, carrying the supplies to the troops. Bill was also involved in an 80 mile march and as there was very little water available, it needed to be sourced from underground springs. After the war, Bill married El...sie (who also served in the Army) and he worked for the local shire council as a tip truck driver then later went to work back on the family farm once his parents passed away. Bill credits his long life to not drinking or smoking, but is very partial to a block of chocolate while serving hed eat whole blocks in one sitting. Happy birthday Bill and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans

01.01.2022 Each year Australians are encouraged to pause on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month as a mark of respect to those who have died, and reflect on the loss and suffering caused by war. Melbourne journalist Edward George Honey first proposed the idea of observing a period of silence in a letter published in the London Evening News on 8 May 1919 using the pen name Warren Foster. His idea did not take hold immediately but a few months later, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, a So...uth African statesman, suggested the same concept and it was put before King George V. Edward Honey then attended a private rehearsal with the Grenadier Guards at Buckingham Palace where it was decided five minutes of silence was too long. In a declaration, King George asked all the people of the British Empire to suspend normal activities for two minutes on the hour of the Armistice. In 1997, in a proclamation issued by the Governor-General, all Australians were urged to observe one minute’s silence on Remembrance Day. It is also appropriate for two minutes’ of silence to be observed. Join me this Remembrance Day and pause at 11 am to remember our service personnel. #RemembranceDay
