20.01.2022 Flinders Ranges 8/8/20 I Still can’t believe the snowfall in the Flinders Ranges! Anyone who has visited the region would know the contrast I feel so fortunate to have experienced a semi-arid environment blanketed in inches of snow - it is certainly something Ill never forget. With the possibility of the extremely rare occurrence of snow at higher elevations of the Flinders I left my camp for higher ground at 5am I was simply hoping to see a light sprinkling of snow acro...ss some of the higher peaks of Wilpena Pound at best. With rain falling as I left it wasn’t long until it turned to sleet without much gain in elevation. As I started the ascent - What happened next was incredible as the mountain was hit by blizzard like conditions and a heavy snow fell around me. As I reached heights of 1000m the conditions were blizzard like and the peaks of the pound unidentifiable were blanketed in at least 2 inches of snow. Here the native White Cypress-pine (Callitris glaucophylla) and Yacca (Xanthorrhoea sp.) sit stunningly against the usual arid colours of the Flinders Ranges.
