23.01.2022 TGN16 Diff overhauled for iSpark Electrical and Fire, this had more of a rumble than a traditional whine, front pinion bearing began to loose the case hardening from the rollers. Good news is that there was no abnormal wear on crown wheel and pinion from poor set up, a bearing kit will be all that’s required to restore quiet operation. The cause of failure was due to lack maintenance by previous owner.

22.01.2022 A little information to help when purchasing differential gears for a project or your daily. What’s the difference between Mill finished gears and Hobbed gear sets? Mill finished gear technology has been the mainstay of the automotive industry from the early days. The process is called single indexing that requires several changes of the cutting tool throughout the machine process.... Face hobbing utilises 5 axis CNC machines for constant indexing, it allows for a stronger, quieter and far more accurate gear set, it is up to 30% faster to machine and reduces the downstream finishing processing time. The accuracy of the final gears saves time on set up, has a superior drag coefficient and much stronger and quieter in operation. The following gear set in blue are a set of Mill finished gears, this set up has been labour intensive as the pinion height was too low, as pictured the pinion is now too deep. While it’s close we will remove 0.003 from the pinion shim, we would expect to find the contact patch centred with 0.008 back lash. The yellow gears are an example of Hobbed machines gears, you can note the contact patch covers a majority of the tooth. This gear set required no change to the pinion height to achieve the correct contact patch. While sometimes aftermarket gear sets are the only option to get your desired ratio, if given the option always purchase a factory Hobbed machined gear set

11.01.2022 Here’s a sample result of manufacturers cut price servicing. Customer has full service history to 100K with the dealership, vehicle was booked in for rear diff pinion seal oil leak. It’s obvious that the diff oil has not been replaced every 40k, as per manufacturers own schedule. Fingers crossed for our customer that this item will not require an expense overhaul in the near future.
