25.01.2022 A message from our School Board Chair, Cecelia. Dear parents and carers in the school community, At our recent Board meeting, we heard that there are a number of parents and carers worried about the wellbeing of students and not sure what to do when there are critical incidents or concerning behaviours. DMS has a strong wellbeing program delivered through the home rooms, year coordinators and peer mentors, it is important to keep emphasising and strengthening the supports a...vailable. This year has been challenging in ways no-one could have anticipated. COVID restrictions have created conditions of uncertainty and anxiety, have prevented holiday travel and visits to family interstate, and produced significant economic consequences for large parts of our community. It has been well recognised that young people have also been particularly affected. There are many resources available to help with social and emotional wellbeing, self care strategies, ways to start conversations if you are worried about someone. DMS has recently invited TeamHEALTH to provide information and support sessions for staff, and the Department of Education has also provided resources and guidance. 20.01.2022 Outdoor Classroom Ms Song’s Year 7 Chinese class today had a wonderful outdoor lesson. They made paper from scratch. Paper was originally made of plant-like fibres, this was me method was invented by Cai Lun, who lived in the 2nd century in China, he created a mix of textile fibres from the bark of the Mullberries soaked in water and he produced sheets of paper. The Year 7’s followed the traditional Chinese method to make their paper today, they used the flowers and leaves from the school garden to decorate their paper. It may take 3-16 hours for their paper to dry. The student’s are looking forward to seeing their paper artwork.

19.01.2022 Student Well-being Roll Groups 8-1 & 8-2 participated in an activity that focussed on developing teamwork skills. The aim of the activity was for a group of student (11-12) to move from one point to another, without touching the ground. The students started by standing on top of two gym mats (one on top of the other) and have to work together to problem solve how they will use the mats as rafts to move across an area without touching the ground. The students had lots of fun as they trialled different strategies to achieve their goal. An element of competition was added to the activity when a second team was added to make a race format.

06.01.2022 Sea-Grass Sculpture- Darwin Middle School Seagrass is the favorite food for dugongs and an important habitat for many marine species within Darwin Harbour. The ...health of the Seagrass meadows is intrinsically linked to the health of the Dugong and overall health of the aquatic ecosystem. It is with sadness that my Artist in Residency at Darwin Middle School has come to an end. It has been an incredible project and have loved working with Marcus Dixon and the team in breathing creativity into the fabric of the school for many generations to come. It has also been a privilege to mentor some students in wood sculpting throughout the process. This tree was another salvaged tree from Cyclone Marcus, planted by students post Cyclone Tracy.
