08.01.2022 Defence of Darwin House will be a tourist attraction, a family-friendly place of recreation, education, enjoyment and a place of reflection open 365 days a year... that is welcome to all. Defence of Darwin House is being designed to be an interpretative community and visitor centre commemorating Darwin’s unique military past and is respectful to the Cenotaph precinct and recently installed Eternal Flame The Cenotaph precinct was the site of where WW2 gun emplacements were fired in defence of our nation. Defence of Darwin House delivers an enriched use for land that for the past 40 years has been used as a bitumen carpark. It overlooks Darwin Harbour's Waters of Remembrance where many lives and ships were lost during the Bombing of Darwin. More bombs were dropped on Darwin than the bettern known battle of Pearl Harbour which attracts 1.5 million visitors annually to pay their respects. Defence of Darwin House is designed to be a landmark tourism and leisure venue addition to the already significant commemorative space surrounding the existing Cenotaph intended to incorporate: An interpretive and education facility A focus for commemorative events A meeting place for ex-service people and their families A café for all community members to enjoy It is the most appropriate location from which we remember those who have served and suffered in defence of Australia. No poker machines will be incorporated into the facility and sound mitigation has been undertaken to ensure there is no impact on surrounding venues. After watching the concept video, let us know your feedback by leaving a comment below.
