18.01.2022 If you're in Darwin and travelling in your caravan at the moment, check out our unique B-24 Caravan! This caravan started life as a B-24D Liberator bomber manufactured by the Consolidated Aircraft Company at their San Diego, California factory. Completed on 8 July 1943, the aircraft was assigned the serial number 42-41182 and first flew on 12 July 1943. It was accepted by the USAAF on 17 July 1943. Arriving in Townsville following a trans-Pacific ferry flight on 10 October,... the aircraft was transferred to the 529th Bombardment Squadron (BS) of the 380th Bomb Group (BG), a part of the USAAF's 5th Air Force. The 529th BS was stationed at Long Airfield south of Darwin. Unlike most B-24s with the 380th BG it was never given a nickname or 'nose art'. 13.01.2022 This year marks 100 years since the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services was formed. Did you know that Qantas had ambitions to fly supersonic passenger jets on the Kangaroo route from Sydney to London? The route would have left Sydney in the morning, stopping at Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo and arriving in London in time for lunch!... https://www.executivetraveller.com//qantas-concorde-supers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZfJol47MHs

12.01.2022 Congratulations to all our team, volunteers and committee as we celebrate being listed as a top rated attraction by travellers. We were voted in the top 10% WORLDWIDE!

11.01.2022 On the 16th of November, 1920 the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Ltd was formed to carry passengers, freight and mail from the east coast of Australia to the far north. Qantas was founded by Sir Hudson Fysh, Paul McGinness, Sir Fergus McMaster in Winton, Queensland with 2 aircraft, an Avro 504K and a Royal Aircraft Factory BE2E. Qantas operations was soon moved to Longreach where Arthur Baird joined the airline. Baird went on to established the high stand...ard of engineering that has become synonymous with the airline. Qantas started operating regular mail and passenger service between Cloncurry and Charleville in November 1922. In 1931, Qantas established a link with the British Airways to carry airmail from Brisbane to Darwin. On the 18th of January 1934, Qantas Empire Airways Limited was formed with a head office in Brisbane. During WW2, Qantas aircrew flew Catalina flying boats between Australia and Ceylon across the Indian ocean to by pass territories occupied by Japan. These journeys were over 5,600km long and would be the longest non-stop regular passenger flights, averaging 28 hours in duration. 32 hour flights were not unheard off in unfavourable wind conditions. These were known as the double sunrise flights. In January 1947, Qantas introduced the Lockheed Constellation into service. Coinciding with this, the flying kangaroo logo was introduced. In 1959, Qantas became the first non-US airline to operate a Boeing 707 jet service. In 1974, Qantas established a world record for carrying the most passengers when a 747 was used to evacuate 673 people from Darwin after Cyclone Tracy. On the 17th of August 1989, Qantas 747-400, VH-OJA (‘City of Canberra’) landed in Sydney after a 20 hour, 18,000km flight from London, establishing a new world distance record for a commercial aircraft. In March 2018, Qantas inaugurated its first Perth-London route, flying the Boeing 787 as flight QF9. Contrasting the original flight by the Smith brothers from London to Darwin almost 100 years earlier, and the original Kangaroo route, QF9 lasted just 17 hours and flew non-stop to its destination. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcE-JILVbOY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr1SARXQ3c4 http://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/history/global/en Photos from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Qantas

09.01.2022 75 years ago, on August 15, 1945, Emperor Hirohito announced the surrender of Japan, formally ending World War II. On September 2, a formal signing of the surrender was conducted on the deck of the United States Navy battleship Missouri in Tokyo harbour. (Photos of surrender on USS Missouri are public domain via Wikipedia) Japanese surrender ceremonies occurred throughout the areas of conflict including New Guinea, Balikpapan, and Borneo.

09.01.2022 On September 10th, 1945, Major General George Frederick Wooten accepted the surrender of Lieutenant General Masao Baba, supreme commander Japanese forces in Borneo. The surrender took place on Labuan Island off the coast of Borneo. Lt. Gen. Baba was tried for war crimes related to the Sandakan death march and was sentenced to death. (Photos from the Australian War Memorial) The aircraft that brought the surrender delegation to Labuan was a Tachikawa KI-45C code named 'Hic...kory'. This aircraft was shipped to Australia where at one point, the fuselage was in the playground at RAAF Fairbairn Kindergarten. This fuselage is now in storage at the Australian War Memorial's Mitchell Annexe. (Photos from the Mitchell Annexe are from our curator's visit in 2018) See more

02.01.2022 Christmas Eve should be a time of hope and joy, but for many Darwinians, it is also a reminder of the destructive winds of Cyclone Tracy. Most of the population of Darwin was made homeless overnight with property destruction on a massive scale. 71 people perished, 22 at sea. Over 30,000 people, from a population of 47,000 were evacuated in the days following, the majority by air. Shared from Walk Darwin.
