25.01.2022 If you surveyed 60,000 people in over 180 countries about what matters most to them, how different would peoples priorities be around the globe? It turns out we have this information, and it is from the OECD Better Life Index. Even more interesting is that there are some geographic and demographic similarities in responses. 16.01.2022 Last week we hosted our first VIRTUAL datathon with UTS: University of Technology Sydney and supported by Altis Consulting. The event was interesting and fun, and we got to work with a passionate group of women in Engineering & IT. The students worked with data from the Not-For-Profit Women's Centre for Health Matters (WCHM) to use their skills to provide valuable insights and visualisations to WCHM on how COVID-19 has affected women in the ACT. We were blown away with the un...ique and interesting outcomes from each of the groups! A big thank you to Marcia Williams from Women's Centre for Health Matters for providing the data and speaking on the day, to Lauren Black and Lucía Bautista of the Women in Engineering & IT team for helping us facilitate the event, to the amazing mentors MaryAlice Campbell, Kareshna Zamani & Parya Reyhanian, and of course to the amazing students who helped create some unique perspectives on an important topic. We're looking forward to collaborating on more events like this in the future! #data4good #uts #datathon #dataviz #womenshealth #UTSWiEIT

13.01.2022 June is Pride Month and we are sharing our latest story focused around LGBTI mental health statistics. While Australian and international research provide evidence that demonstrate significant concern regarding mental health outcomes and suicidal behaviours among LGBTI people, significant knowledge gaps remain. This is due to lack of inclusion of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status in population researching and data collection in mental health services. As... data informs evidence-based policy, this exclusion has lead to inaccuracy in reporting and significant underestimates, which in turn impacts on LGBTI inclusion in mental health and suicide prevention policies, strategies and programmes. 09.01.2022 Small charities are sitting on a gold mine of data that can transform their fundraising. The collection and analysis of data can be a valuable tool in helping charities respond to the needs of their users and take the guesswork out of fundraising. But it can sometimes feel like it isnt a level playing field youve got the big charities with budgets and staff to play with on one end, and the small charities on the other, for whom access to the world of data can seem like a ...privilege that isnt theirs. 07.01.2022 "We used sophisticated machine-learning algorithms to analyse the seismic data for undiscovered patterns in the lead-up to eruptions. The four-hour energy burst proved a signal that often heralded an imminent eruption. We then used these pre-eruption patterns to teach a computer model to raise an alert and tested whether it could anticipate other eruptions it had not learned from.
