Review other associated plans (such as the parent Crisis Management Plan); Ensure that the appropriate training and testing is scheduled and occurs; If you have appointed a Pandemic Manager, great initiative! If not, why not consider the benefits. 24.01.2022 A Resilient Business has a Plan Part 1 The most resilient organisations have well thought out, robust and integrated business resiliency plans plans that allow them to focus during the most difficult of times. Given the COVID-19 events and their impacts, organisations should now be deep into the Action Stage of their Pandemic Plan. It appears that some organisations may not have a Pandemic Plan, while others have a plan that is now dated. If that is your organisation we r...ecommend that you should seek to establish a plan that includes, at a minimum, nine key sections/elements. Here are the first three! o Context an overview of the business and its ability to manage risk of disruption/emergency/crisis. How this plan works alongside the other critical resiliency plans, such as your Crisis Management Plan. o Governance and Authority clear authority regarding the development, approval, implementation, improvement, auditing and review of the plan. o Concept of operations established roles, responsibilities and how the business will command, control, coordinate and communicate their pandemic response and recovery. Try and link this back to your Crisis Management Plan. #riskmanagement #resiliency #pandemic #crisis #impacts #crisismanagement #pandemicplanning #resiliency #criticalbusinessfunctions #corepurpose #criticalbusinessoperation #COVID19 #emergencymanagement #emergencyplanning #continuity

23.01.2022 The Alternative Workplace As the world continues to come to terms with the impact of #COVID19, many organisations have rightly heralded the success of their remote working transition. While the impacts of remote working on staff productivity & the environ may be salient, with increased employee performance & positive environ implications, there are still aspects that must be considered. Working from home still has some disadvantages, especially when it happens for prolonged ...periods with studies (Oxford) showing that working from home full time without socializing may harm mental health. A 2017 ILO report found that 41% of Fully Remote (FR) workers had high stress levels, compared to 25% of office workers. Many FR workers highlighted minimum social exposure & an ambiguous definition of working hours as the main cause of this stress. With many organisations now considering their #recoverystrategies they must be conscious that a FR working environment may not be the silver bullet. The most practical approach might be the Alternative Workplace system. This working arrangement is already somewhat commonplace in the Western world & allows eligible employees to come into the office part of the time, with flexible working hours, or when there was an absolute requirement. #workingfromhome #alternativeworkplace

20.01.2022 The Human is still the Most Important Part of Security Without doubt, the most important element of an integrated security operation remains the human being. It is imperative then that your security operation respects human factor methodology and seeks to optimise human performance while reducing the significance of human error.... With that in mind ask yourself these questions; 1. Are Human Factors a priority to your organisation? 2. Do you have a Human Factors Integration Standard (where the design of process and equipment takes into account human limitations and takes advantage of human capabilities)? 3. Have you established a working environment where your people feel comfortable, proud and supported? If the answer to any of those questions is NO try and revisit your Human Factors focus. #security #securitysolutions #securitymanagement #securityservices #securityprofessionals

18.01.2022 Mission Statements are More Than Just Words One of the best ways to promote Business Resiliency within your organisation is implying it within your inspiring mission statement. But why would a rousing mission build resilience, you may ask? Well, because any remarkable accomplishment inevitably included setbacks and obstacles that required resilience and courage to overcome. Resilience is not about avoiding these roadblocks, but dealing with them and continuing to move forward.... This same mindset is true of the most resilient organisations. When faced with the toughest of tests, such as those currently being seen globally, companies that are truly driven by an inspiring mission are better suited to meet the challenge, fixing their absolute focus on what is most critical. They can see past the current challenges, evolve, pivot and look for opportunities to expand their business with an eye on what lay ahead. Does your mission statement inspire resilience or is it just words? #resilience #resiliency #emergencymanagement #pandemicplanning #crisismanagement #pandemicmanagement #plans #crisis

14.01.2022 A Resilient Business has a Plan - Part 2 So after you have sorted your plan context, governance model and conops, what comes next? We recommend the following three sections;... o Risk assessment and resource mapping summary of existing risk assessments (relating to influenza pandemics), including critical business functions, business impacts and the identification and mapping of available critical resources and supply chain system. o Escalation processes a description of the processes and responsibilities for surveillance, rapid risk assessments and escalation. o Stakeholders description of roles and responsibilities of the key stakeholders in the support of the business' pandemic preparedness, response and recovery. #pandemicplanning #crisismanagement #riskmanagement #resiliency #pandemic #crisis #impacts #governance #preparedness #compliance #critical #response #recovery #stakeholders #criticalbusinessfunctions #criticalbusinessoperation #COVID19 #emergencymanagement #emergencyplanning

12.01.2022 Not all Games are meant to Entertain With so many people at home supporting the Isolation Task Force there has been some fantastic on line contributions from all around the world that have sort to make us laugh and keep up the human spirit. Unfortunately, not all on line games/quizzes are meant to entertain;... First Job Title: STOP Favourite Food: GIVING Favourite colour: PEOPLE First pet’s name: YOUR First street name: PERSONAL Favourite teacher at school: INFORMATION Best subject at school: THAT Favourite sport: LETS Favourite movie: THEM Favourite singer/band: CRACK First car: YOUR Favourite holiday destination: PASSWORDS If you see these types of things in your social feeds, do not participate and encourage others to give them a miss also while they might seem fun at the time, do you really want to take the chance? #resilience #resiliency #plan #crisis #socialmedia #quiz #onlinequizzes

11.01.2022 Disneyland Leadership Principle #3 Organise the Operation Disneyland’s leadership model highlights the absolute focus and understanding about what needs to be done and then putting the right people in place to complete the task Great leaders organise the operation so that information is shared, decisions are made, and quality work is produced efficiently and effectively... What can your Security Operation learn from this; Until you get the organisation right, you cannot get the best results. Make every position count, minimise the number of layers in your business (get flat) Be clear about who is responsible for what, and stress that responsibility and authority go hand in hand Everyone takes responsibility for change, expect resistance #leadership #security #culture #training #securitymanagement #management #leaders #business #leadershipdevelopment

10.01.2022 The Importance of a Succession Plan As detailed recently in the Wall Street Journal, one of the least heralded impacts of COVID19 is the state of succession planning within many organisations. Seems as more staff become sick, numerous businesses are struggling to find appropriately qualified and skilled replacements within their own organisations. Companies are finding out that succession cuts across every line of their business (not just Executives!) and that single points... of failure do actually place an operation at risk. Likewise, organisations are being reminded of the importance of sharing information, the criticality of ongoing skill development, and the need for reliable information networks that are centralised, secured and resilient. #resilient #resilience #crisismanagement #covid19

09.01.2022 Does your business have a planned and tested approach to releasing information to the media in the event of a crisis? A crisis communication plan or media reaction plan (whatever you want to call it) is an integral element of your whole of business response to any business disruption or crisis event. It is imperative that you have one and that you test it. Social media has accelerated the speed in which both fact and fiction (fake news!) can spread making your job of getting... ahead of the situation increasingly more difficult. It is critical to have well trained and informed staff able to IMMEDIATELY, CONFIDENTLY and REPEATEDLY talk to your organisation’s preparation and response actions. Equally as important is to have someone monitoring your social feeds and responding with the same message. Tell it Early, Tell the Truth, Tell it Yourself #communication #crisiscommunication #pandemicplanning #pandemic #crisismanagement #critical #response #crisis #socialmedia #awareness #preparedness #resilience #response #fakenews

08.01.2022 Disneyland Leadership Principles #1 Leadership Excellence is your Baseline In developing their leadership model Disney undertook extensive research. During that period, they discovered the leadership principle that would become the bedrock of their model. Disney’s extensive research clearly showed that guests were far more likely to return if they were satisfied with their previous visit and their satisfaction levels were the highest when they had positive interaction with ...a Cast Member. What was the key to producing that? Answer = Effective Leadership. The study showed that the business units with the highest scores in guest satisfaction were the same ones whose leaders received the highest ratings from their direct report in qualities such as recognition, respect, listening, coaching, and delegation. In short, Disney discovered that great leadership leads to employee excellence, which leads to customer satisfaction and strong business results. What can your Security Operation learn from this - customers do not come first, leadership comes first. #security #securityoperations #leadership

06.01.2022 Did We Really Not Expect This? Interesting to hear the amount of people within the western world that are justifying the failure to recognise the current pandemic. There is ample evidence that many have been raising concerns for some time that a pandemic was inevitable; * In recent years 100's of health experts have written books, white papers, op-eds warning of the possibility;... * Bill Gates has been telling anyone who would listen, incl. 18 mil viewers of his TED Talk; * Johns Hopkins Centre even war gamed what might happen if a new coronavirus swept the globe; * Taiwan initiated a response it had spent 17yrs rehearsing (after SARs killed >20% of people infected in Taiwan). Taiwan has <400 cases amongst their 24mil people. Aust >6300 with similar population. Take away from this is that a resilient business must be informed & conscious of all perceivable & possible events, & seek to mitigate the impacts of these events as best as possible. To achieve this, your business must identify, develop & access reputable sources to verify/refute information, & in particular media reporting, on potential crisis events, such as a #pandemic. These trusted sources will allow you to continuously monitor events, within/outside of Aust. #pandemicplanning #preparedness #emergencymanagement

06.01.2022 Leadership Excellence Victoria's disastrous hotel quarantine program has rightly called into question the present state of the security industry, and in particular its absolute lack of leadership and accountability. Given this, it is timely to consider how the security industry can seek to enhance its approach to leadership. One possible option is to look more closely at how industry benchmark organisations, such as Disneyland, seek to attain Leadership Excellence.... The Disneyland Leadership model is not expensive or complex. It simply requires a commitment on the part of the individuals involved to create an exceptional service experience for each and every customer. This is achieved not by an absolute focus on customer service training, but through the model’s underlying principle; ‘give your people a purpose, not just a job’. These are the 6 key Disneyland Leadership principles that can be easily transferred to any security operation to guide the attainment of Leadership Excellence; Leadership Excellence is your Baseline Envision the Future Organise the Operation Engage the Team Commit to Results Leave your Legacy #leadership #excellence #SecurityOperations #security

05.01.2022 Identify Your Core Purpose and Continue to do it. With the impacts of COVID 19 now starting to affect businesses around the world, some organisations are presently facing the very real prospect of restricting their operation. To limit the fallout to your business and help focus your finite resources and $, you need to identify what your Critical Business Functions (CBF) are and what impact the business will suffer should you be unable to continue to support them. This process... will help you identify essential employees and other critical inputs (raw materials, suppliers, contractors) required to maintain critical business operations throughout this difficult period. Once you have your CBF, communicate to everyone what it is you will be doing, and not doing, until you have the capacity to return to Business as Usual. #crisismanagement #pandemicplanning #resiliency #criticalbusinessfunctions #corepurpose #criticalbusinessoperation #COVID19 #emergencymanagement #emergencyplanning #continuity

04.01.2022 Disneyland Leadership Principle #2 Envision the Future At Disney, they encourage their Leaders to create a picture of the change that is required and to proactively communicate that vision with passion. What can your Security Operation learn from this;... Leaders within the operation must ensure that their vision for their area contributes to the vision for their business and, in turn, the vision for the overall company; Technology and Innovation is a must. Leaders must constantly promote it and stress the benefits at every opportunity; This is not a quick fix. It takes time & courage to; o Create the Cultural Change o Keep the Goal Posts in the one spot o Follow thru to the end & not let it fade away #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #security #securityoperations #securityawareness #securitysolutions #securitymanagement #securityindustry
