24.01.2022 The 6 Star energy efficiency standard is such a low bar and the failure of COAG to raise the bar, lower energy bills and lower emissions is disappointing. I feel very lucky to have clients that aim for the best. Thank you!

21.01.2022 What an honour to be the designer of the MBA 2020 Country Home of the Year Award! There's always tough competition for this state-wide award, especially from the South West region, so it's extra special to have the Mid-West recognised. MBA's comment of this home being "truly unique and energy efficient" is the intent for every home I design and this one achieved that and so much more. Awesome homes don't happen without awesome clients. Thank you Paul and Hannah for the privilege, each home is a collaborative effort and it was a pleasure collaborating with you! Congrats to McAullay Builders, your workmanship is meticulous and this award is well deserved!

16.01.2022 The start of something special! Super efficient at 9.1 stars, natural feature stonework, lots of reclaimed timber and raw zincalume. All perfectly suited to the pristine bush block and the wonderful sustainable-minded clients....... stay tuned!

12.01.2022 Flashback Friday. 2010 HIA Midwest Housing Awards Home of the Year Hard to believe this was a decade ago! "Bold, brazen and a breath of fresh air" and "Breaking away from the sausage factory production homes". Have a great long weekend!

10.01.2022 The benefits of thermal mass make a huge difference in thermal performance in our climate. Here's the predicted temperatures, without air conditioning, of the same design using different materials. Although well insulated, the fully framed building closely follows the outside temperature while the masonry building stays about eleven degrees cooler on the hottest days. The concrete slab on ground made the biggest difference. I've been pleasantly surprised by the accuracy of these predicted temperatures while keeping track of our own house.

10.01.2022 Bore Road looking sweet. The authentic natural materials already adding a unique feel and textures that make this home fit right into its bush setting.

10.01.2022 So much to love about this recently completed residence: - Awesome clients with their vision firmly set on sustainability, an elevated and unspoilt bush block close to the CBD, a variety of recycled and natural materials, 9.1 stars NatHERS rating, rainwater harvesting, total wastewater recycling system, solar powered with battery backup the list goes on! Kudos to @mcaullaybuilders for the attention to detail, extra touches and professionalism too!

08.01.2022 Sustainable House Day on this Sunday, definitely worth checking out some of these homes if you happen to be in Perth or down south on the weekend. https://sustainablehouseday.com/find-a-sustainable-house/

08.01.2022 I’m often asked about how different wall types perform for energy efficiency. Here's a comparison of how a few performed when modelled in energy rating software. Their comparative cost is another factor.

07.01.2022 How our house utilises the sun and breeze to stay naturally warm in winter and cool in summer. We have a fantastic climate to work with in Geraldton. Choosing a block with good orientation makes it easier, I can help with that too! 0427 371 804

07.01.2022 Concept sketch for some very cool new clients. Have a great weekend!

06.01.2022 Some pics of Explorer Ave on a perfect Kalbarri day early last month. North facing views and passive solar design are the perfect partners. Thanks for the photos Ben!

06.01.2022 Explorer Ave Kalbarri under construction! Another passive solar design with 9.3 star energy rating, rain water harvesting, waste water recycling. All natural, non-toxic materials and finishes throughout for healthy indoor air quality and minimal environmental impacts. All that with good looks too!

03.01.2022 Happy Spring Equinox! Today the daylight hours equal night-time and marks the change of season. Our verandah is designed to start fully shading the windows as we say goodbye to winter. The house was amazing over winter with internal temperatures around 22 - 23 degrees. Currently we're hovering around 24 degrees and closed curtains overnight keep the temperature stable overnight.

01.01.2022 Bore Road site visit. Rammed earth walls adding a third dimension and looking oh so sweet in contrast with the polished concrete slab. Progressing very nicely McAullay Builders!

01.01.2022 The phone camera doesn't do it justice but the rainbow at sunset yesterday framed the 'solar verandah' nicely. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2019!!
