23.01.2022 The Bundanon homestead housed some of Australia's most precious artworks, worth $43 million. The ongoing fire threat has forced the homestead's caretakers to evacuate all the art and move it to Sydney. A new fire-proof gallery is being constructed, but it won't be ready for two years.

23.01.2022 Conservation Manager, Julia Sharp, recently completed a sensitive conservation treatment of a 'Portrait of Sophia O'Brien' 1841 by Maurice Felton for the State Library of New South Wales. Full article in the SL Magazine Winter 2018 edition here:

21.01.2022 "A hidden Cupid in Vermeer’s 'Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window', one of the world’s most famous paintings, is set to resurface on the canvas after two and a half centuries behind a layer of paint. During restoration work, conservators discovered, to their surprise, that the naked figurewhich dominates the upper right section of the picturewas overpainted long after the artist’s death." https://www.theartnewspaper.com//hidden-cupid-resurfaces-i

20.01.2022 Our studio is currently restoring the Stations of the Cross paintings (stations 2 and 3) for St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney! Removing heavy layers of dirt, smoke, grime, discoloured varnish and overpaint, the cleaning is revealing vibrant details of the original paintwork underneath. Stations 1 and 6 were recently restored and re-installed in their original places. Visit the Cathedral to have a look at the treatments that have been completed.... 19.01.2022 Very proud and privileged for our conservation team to be restoring the 14 Stations of the Cross at the magnificent St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. A hugely rewarding project, currently underway and to be completed next year. Thank you to the wonderful team at St Mary's Cathedral, TED installation crew and Elizabeth Fortescue at The Sunday Telegraph for featuring us this Sunday.

18.01.2022 We hope our colleagues, collectors and all those in our lively arts community are doing well during this surreal time. David Stein & Co is continuing to look after art - restoring and conserving artworks and collections, as we have done for thirty years. Our studio remains open and we are safely and happily working within the current COVID-19 guidelines. If you have been thinking of having a painting, work on paper or artwork cleaned, restored or reframed, then now may be the... perfect time for treating the timeless. Send us a photograph of your artwork and we can provide an online estimate of costs. You don’t have to leave the house as we offer our dedicated art carrier service for safe collection and delivery. Our studio remains open by appointment: Phone 02 9360 2201 Email [email protected]

16.01.2022 "If an object’s parts are replaced over time, does it remain the same object? If restoration is merely replication, then does it not become an act of enshrining, fictionalising or even fetishising the past a nostalgic theatre of authenticity? Or, rather, in merging the old with the new, can it provide us with a teleological understanding of time, whereby the present improves the past as much as the other way around?" https://frieze.com/a/does-art-restoration-risk-erasing-past

13.01.2022 "Great attention is devoted to these rarely reproduced B-sides that only a select few are privileged to see. Those who get the opportunity revel in seemingly mundane strips of masking tape, stamps with mysterious numbers, and crossed-out titles, knowing that they are privy to an art history uncharted in textbooks. When pressed, they might even tell you that their second-favorite side is the front."

12.01.2022 A new series of 'Fake or Fortune?' is up, with a nail-biting opener last night! Love to see conservation playing an important role in authentication, and my old colleague Professor Aviva Burnstock, from The Courtauld Institute. https://iview.abc.net.au//fak/series/7/video/ZW1703A001S00

06.01.2022 Lining must be handled with great sensitivity, a modern understanding of the science of the materials and their behaviors, and extensive craft skill."

04.01.2022 So proud of our team winning AICCM 'Treatment of the Year' for The Stella Project at Grosvenor Place!

02.01.2022 "Pollock used all sorts of paints oil paint, house paint, car paint, radiator paint and they all aged and got dirty in different ways... That's where conservator Chris Stavroudis comes in: His job is to clean the painting using swabs, solvents, and tiny brushes."
