25.01.2022 Here is the video from last nights North Ward Candidate Forum hosted by Ballarat Times News Group. It was great to have all candidates in the one forum where we could answer questions from readers. Are there any questions that you think should have been asked but weren't?... 24.01.2022 Michelle is a Community Development Professional who has worked across local government and a number of not for profit enterprises. She is passionate about the future of Ballarat. She improved my understanding of the challenges facing our region while I was a participant on Leadership Ballarat and Western Region. If I am elected to Ballarat City Council I will always listen and act in the best interest of the community.... Authorised by David Harris, PO Box 5 Miners Rest Victoria 3352.

22.01.2022 Claire is an inspirational teacher who co-ordinates the Kitchen Garden Program at our kids' school. I’ve been lucky enough to volunteer in her class for the last four years, helping the students to prepare and cook healthy meals. The students source fresh seasonal ingredients from the school’s vegetable garden. The program teaches healthy eating, sustainability and teamwork.... Over 60 volunteers from within our community assist with the program each year. If I am elected to Ballarat City Council I will always serve the community's best interests and help them to achieve their aspirations. 18.01.2022 HOW TO VOTE? Hi I'm David Harris and I'm an independent candidate for the Ballarat City Council North Ward. I’ve been asked by residents over the last two days where my HOW TO VOTE card is? My answer is always the same I don’t have one.... When I was approached by other candidates for preferencing I declined to participate and explained to them why. I know that seems unusual, but it is a principle I stand by. I will work impartially with any team of Councillors who are elected. In my view HOW TO VOTE cards dumb down democracy. Your vote is valuable and you should treat it as such. Your vote is your own. Don't let others decide for you. Democracy is best served when candidates are judged by their own merit and character. That’s why I don’t have any campaign material using the cliched Vote 1 phrase. Vote for me however you feel is appropriate. I’m not a politician. I’m just a regular citizen standing for public office. I want to represent and serve the community. If elected I will act with integrity, fairness and in the interest of the community. Authorised by David Harris, PO Box 5 Miners Rest Victoria 3352.

18.01.2022 I was approached by the Dowling Road Upgrade Action Group last week. They explained their ongoing concerns with road conditions and surfacing along Dowling Road. Their presentation was comprehensive, and importantly, it was based on evidence. What they have achieved so far is a great example of what passionate community advocacy across local government and other stakeholders can achieve. After our conversation I let them know that I was happy to support the previous resolut...ion passed by Council and to actively seek the remaining funding to complete the project. Projects like this can mean a lot for North Ward residents. If elected I would relish the opportunity to work with local groups to make a meaningful difference to their community. 12.01.2022 School’s back! As the kids arrived at Miners Rest Primary School this morning they saw fences and machinery beside the school. This caused a bit of a buzz and to them it seemed to have happened overnight. In reality it is the culmination of more than six years of effort by a dedicated School Council and school community.... Prior to 2015 families from Miners Rest with pre-schoolers were travelling to 16 other kindergartens around Ballarat. After years of lobbying we received support from Local and State Government to build our own kindergarten. Our kindergarten has eased the burden on parents, enhanced links with our play group and supported our kids so that kinder and grade prep transition is simpler and less scary. But the kinder wasn’t our only goal. Our community saw a need for expanded school facilities. We are rapidly growing in Miners Rest. In 2012 we had 186 students enrolled at our school, today we have 415 students enrolled in our school and kinder combined and the numbers keep growing. We were deliberate and clear in what we needed. We collected evidence. We knocked on doors. We spoke to all the stakeholders. We weren’t always welcomed or listened to; but we were respectful, impartial and persistent. In the end we secured $21M funding for land acquisition and a school expansion from State Government. The State Government purchased the large properties to the west of the current school site and we are now building: - 10 new classrooms - A new administration building (and retaining our beautiful heritage school building) - A competition grade gymnasium - A football oval I know you might feel that I’m focussing on Miners Rest with this post, but I’m not. What I’m focussing on is that local communities can achieve great outcomes when they work together! Ballarat City Council should be no different. Councillors should reflect the best of their communities and work for positive change. This is part of the reason why I am standing for election as an independent candidate. I will represent the residents and rate payers of North Ward. I will ensure that Council’s focus is on the needs of the community. Authorised by David Harris, PO Box 5 Miners Rest VIC 3352.

What do you think are the biggest issues that need to be addressed by the next Council?... Authorised by David Harris, PO Box 5 Miners Rest Victoria 3352.

03.01.2022 I met Dale by chance back in 2012. I was at Miners Rest Primary School where the Grade 6 class was hosting the Miners Rest Play Group. My kids’ were still toddlers and they loved the opportunity to play with big kids! Dale popped his head in to check on the event and I approached him to complement the exceptional behaviour of the students interacting with the toddlers. Clearly Dale recognised the potential for an extra set of arms and legs and within a month I attended my f...irst School Council meeting! We share a similar philosophy: Be open, be welcoming and remember that problems are solved by teams If I am elected to Ballarat City Council I will always listen and act in the best interest of the community.
