19.01.2022 Cyber Security An electronic funds transfer fraud has occurred where a client of a Settlement Agent has been emailed by a person they have believed to be their conveyancer. The email was fraudulent and did not come from the clients Settlement Agent, but was a very good imitation. Many of us have seen this type of fraudulent email, supposedly coming from a Bank and sometimes they are very hard to pick. ... Otherwise known as spoofing the client has assumed the email is legitimate and has followed instructions to transfer funds. At David Heaford Settlements we have adopted the following procedure. 1. We will NEVER provide our Trust Account details to you in the body of an email. 2. We will provide you with a hard copy of our Trust Account details, when we either meet you in person or contained in our letter of engagement or Preliminary Settlement Statement. 3. Should it be necessary, at a later stage, to provide you with our Bank Account details, then these will only be provided, over the telephone, by us making a call to the telephone number that you have provided to us in your letter of engagement. Please contact us immediately if you ever receive an email requesting monies to be transferred to our Trust Account.
