25.01.2022 How to sane in a crazy world "How to stay sane in a crazy world" is the title of a new publication written by Trevor and Anne Boulton for Year 12 students. This easy to read booklet is based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and provides year 12 readers with some simple tips on how to promote brain health. Fraser Coast Regional Council has provided $4,800.00 in funds to promote a collaborative partnership between Hervey Bay City Rotary Club, Trevor and Anne Boulton and the local secondary schools. It was my privilege today to visit Urangan State High School and the Fraser Coast Anglican College to assist with the presentation of these booklets free of charge to the school's guidance officer's. I commend this booklet and thank Trevor and Anne for helping our young people to stay sane in a crazy world.
25.01.2022 A beautiful morning at the Torquay Markets It is always good to visit the Torquay Markets on a Saturday morning and talk with the traders. This morning I caught up with locals to talk about trade, the beautiful weather and the influx of visitors in recent weeks from the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

22.01.2022 Out and About in Division 9 One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a Councillor is engaging with people in our community and helping people solve problems. My ethos is to be 'visible, vocal and active' in our community. This is my commitment to both Division 9 and the Fraser Coast Region. This week I have been actively following up on a number of matters including:... - fixing up a section of Bauhinia Drive in Kawungan; - improving motorist visibility on the corner of Truro and Bideford Street in Torquay; -installing a new 240 LT general waste bin and doggy bags at Bauhinia Park, Kawungan; -assisting a community group with disability building compliance in Torquay; -cleaning up the Scarness Toilet Block; and -investigating the decline in health of a Morton Bay fig tree in Torquay. As an active member of the Fraser Coast Regional Council Wide Bay Water and Waste Committee I want to make constructive and sustainable contributions such as improving our water security, waste recycling and effluent management. Today we inspected the Aubinville Sewage Treatment Plant and the Urraween Reservoir.
21.01.2022 Central Queensland 8 Ball Championships in Hervey Bay I thoroughly enjoy being visible, vocal and active in the community. You meet many people and you learn so much about our community. Today I attended the Central Queensland 8 ball Championships in Hervey Bay. The 8 ball championships involve men and women and children. The championships are categorised into A, B and C Grades. Later this year, the Australian Championships will be hosted in Albury/Wodonga. Hervey Bay could be a great venue for the Australian Championships in future years.
20.01.2022 New Footpath addresses the missing pedestrian link on McLiver Street Today it was great to check on the progress of construction of a new footpath on McLiver Street. The new footpath is addressing a missing footpath link along McLiver Street. The footpath project is funded by the State Government Queensland Works For Project scheme. As a local government Councillor I thoroughly enjoy engaging with our local community. I may not always be able to resolve a constituent's problems. However, I value listening to a constituent's concerns and then advocating on their behalf. This project is a win for our community
19.01.2022 Fraser Coast Kidney Support Club Celebrates Christmas Today I attended the Fraser Coast Kidney Support Club Christmas luncheon and presented Certificates of Appreciation to those fine people who support this great organisation. The Kidney Club provides fundraising and social support to those suffering with chronic kidney disease. We currently have 7 renal chairs at Maryborough and 10 renal chairs at Hervey Bay. Renal patients have to receive renal dialysis at least three times per week and the nurses and doctors are like an extended family to the patients. I am proud to support the Kidney Club and look forward to saying hello to them at their regular Torquay Markets sausage sizzle. Well done to Sandy Turner and her team for organising the day.
18.01.2022 Fraser Coast is to get a new hospice
16.01.2022 Come on Council-Let’s get on with it! Fraser Coast Regional Council (Council) should adopt a Graffiti Management Policy and strategy because our streets are increasingly being tarnished by graffiti. https://www.davidleeherveybay.com.au/come-on-council-lets-/
14.01.2022 Fraser Coast Hospice Association Incorporated and Woollam Constructions Engagement Forum This afternoon local construction contractors attended the Beachhouse Hotel to listen to presentations about the construction of the new Hospice. A billboard will be placed on the 222 Urraween Road, Pialba site next week. Later this year, we will commence construction of a 6 to a 9 bed Hospice for the care of the terminally ill. We are especially appreciative for Keith Pitt, Federal Member of Hinkler, for his $7.0 million contribution under the Hinkler Regiional Deal.
11.01.2022 Councillors Tour Waste Recycling Centres Today Councillors toured the Cleanaway Material Recycling Centre, Nikenbah Transfer Station and the Maryborough and Granville Landfill sites. The Maryborough landfill site has sufficient space to operate until 2050 and beyond especially with innovations that reduce the amount of landfill. Some of the ground breaking initiatives to reduce landfill include the elimination of polystyrene. I am proud to be an active member of the Water and Waste Management Committee and to have input into setting our Council water and waste management strategies.
10.01.2022 Today I inspected the eastern lagoon located at the rear of Arkarra Court, Dundowran at the invitation of a local resident. The eastern and western lagoons are separated by a strip of land. This strip of land precludes the passage of water between the western and eastern lagoons. The resident has observed the decline in the health of the eastern lagoon's ecosystem over the last 3 or so years including departure of some species of bird and the degradation of water plants. In my opinion, the adoption and implementation of a waterbody management strategy is integral to the environmental sustainability and legacy of our Fraser Coast waterbodies.
09.01.2022 Fraser Coast Regional Council-Finalist in Community Shaping Award Category It was a pleasure today to attend the virtual Local Government Queensland Awards Ceremony at Orchid House. Orchid House is located in the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens. Congratulations to all of Council's volunteers for the support they provide to our community. Our community nursery was a finalist in the Community Shaping category. Orchid House has some beautiful orchids on display. They are also planning to install a new coffee machine (without the barista). I highly recommend a visit to Orchid House and the beautiful Botanic Gardens.
09.01.2022 Council to develop a Graffiti Management Policy Today councillor colleagues supported my motion for the development of a graffiti management policy and strategy for consideration in the mid-year budget review. You can read my speech by following the link to my website. https://www.davidleeherveybay.com.au/my-speech-to-council-/
08.01.2022 The Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC Visits Maryborough It was a privilege today to meet the Governor of Queensland. Fraser Coast Regional Council hosted a light lunch with the Governor at the Brolga Theatre. Council informed the Governor about actual and potential economic and community developments within the Fraser Coast Region. Later the Governor met with Maryborough community leaders including School Captains.
08.01.2022 Fraser Coast is to get a new hospice Today we celebrated the turning of the sod for the construction of a new 6-bed Hospice on Urraween Road, Urraween. As a member of the Committee of Management of the Fraser Coast Hospice Association Incorporated I am delighted to be involved in this project. Thank you Jasine Leslie for having the vision to get this project off the ground. What better way to serve our community than to provide a home-like, loving and supportive environment f...or the terminally ill. Over the last 12 months we have worked hard at identifying a suitable parcel of land, developing an architectural brief, going to tender, engaging an architectural consultancy team and finally tendering for the construction project. Our project has a very strong mandate for local buy and support. The Hospice has a vision for establishing a 12-bed facility and a palliative care outreach service. We will be lobbying our State Government to consider supporting our services to the community.
08.01.2022 National Police Remembrance Day Today I attended the National Police Remembrance Day at the Life Church in Maryborough. It was great to catch up with my uncle, retired Chief Inspector Norm McGill and former military policeman and policeman Bernie Martin. ... Let's take a moment today to remember the sacrifice and commitment of our police services members throughout Australia and the Pacific Region.
07.01.2022 Strategic Planning Day- Bayside Christian College It was a joy today to participate in a strategic planning day with my fellow Bayside Christian College Directors. Setting Bayside Christian College's strategic direction is one of the most important functions of our Board. Our facilitator, Elizabeth Jameson of Board Matters, did an excellent job in focusing the discussion. L to R: David Lee, Elizabeth Jameson and Board Chair, Brad Douglas.
06.01.2022 Council should have a Graffiti Management Policy We have a real challenge with graffiti in our community. Today I met with a constituent to discuss graffiti in his street. I was shown a house at the end of the street that has graffti on the garage shade cloth and on the road outside the house. The owner is a woman in her 80s. The constituent and I then walk down the adjacent lane way and observe graffiti (and profane drawings) intermittently located on fences and retainer wal...ls. Across the road in Taylor Street a homeowner has graffiti all over their new colour bond fence. This is not street art, it is juvenile and a criminal offence. In my opinion, as a matter of importance, Council should adopt a Graffiti Management Policy and then collaborate with the the community and service organisations in cleaning up the graffiti. In recent months I have been talking to a contractor who has a solution. What's the hold up? Let's get on with the task of addressing the issue. In the coming weeks I will be posting an article on graffiti management on my website.
05.01.2022 Council has an economic roadmap In my opinion, Council entered COVID 19 with a strong and robust financial position and has a well-considered roadmap to stimulate our local and regional economic recovery. We live in unprecedented times. Our Federal and State Governments has escalating debt and deficits as they attempt to navigate our economy through unchartered territory. Further to this, there is also the prospect of a technical national and global recession (two negative ...growth figures over two quarters). This pandemic has occurred within the context of a prolonged low interest rate environment and a moribund Reserve Bank of Australia monetary policy. This year, Council will post a planned operating deficit of $7 million and invest $138 million into our community including roads, buildings, footpaths and water and stormwater infrastructure. Council has also established a $1 million COVID 19 economic recovery fund to assist our business community. Our local businesses are vital to our economy. During COVID 19, I have observed new business start-ups, suspensions and readapted business models. I have also observed courageous and resilient business owners. Our local businesses are vital to the strength of our local and regional economy and I encourage our local community to buy local.
05.01.2022 Let's Support the Fraser Coast Kidney Support Club Inc Today it was my privilege to assist the Fraser Coast Kidney Support Club in raisiing funds for research into kidney disease and supporting the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Services (WBHHS) Renal Unit Many of the volunteers and club members have had or are currently receiving treatment for kidney disease. The WBHHS Renal Unit has 12 renal chairs for renal dialysis. Patients with chronic renal disease may require dialysis and have to attend the renal unit on a regular basis. Thank you Sandy, Kate, Bob, Dot, Geoff, Amy and others for your contributions to our community. The Kidney Support Club is currently looking for a car trailer with a BBQ so that volunteers do not have to lift heavy equipment into and out of motor vehicles for fundraising events.
05.01.2022 We Care 2 Inc - we say thank you! It was a pleasure to attend the We Care 2 Inc Volunteers Day this afternoon. Thank you We Care 2 for your service to the community. In recent years I have observed We Care 2 providing breakfast on the esplanade on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to the needy. The breakfast meetings are an opportunity for people to congregate for breakfast and share their concerns. Some months ago, it was a pleasing for me on behalf of the Fraser Coast Regio...nal Council to support a project for the construction of concrete slab between the kitchen stores. This area was previously a quagmire causing occupational health and safety concerns. We Care 2 Inc volunteers reported today that this initiative has vastly improved efficiencies in transferring food stores on the fork lift. Well done We Care 2 and keep up the great work. Our community is thankful for this important service.
03.01.2022 Parks Infrastructure and Enhancement Plans Recently I consulted the residents located around the Bauhinia Drive Park in Kawungan about a proposal to enhance the Park. I was presented with a petition and a number of objections which I subsequently tabled at Council's Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday 26 August 2020. The objections were mainly in regard to the installation of public toilets and the issue of a lack of car parking. Following on from Council's request for comments on ...the Park Infrastructure, Council has determined that it will now place plans on hold while it completes an Open Space Strategy review. Thank you to all those residents who have contacted me about their concerns. Barron Park located in East Street, Scarness will go ahead as planned. I met and contacted residents located around the Park and thank them for their input. Further enhancements will be made to Barron Park including new play equipment.
03.01.2022 Scarness Caravan Park To Open for School Holidays Today I announced that part of the Scarness Caravan Park will reopen in time for the September school holidays, with the eastern section now available for bookings for self-contained caravans and RVs. Contractors will soon commence demolition of the central and western sections of the park before Christmas. Council will do all that it reasonably can to minimise potential disruption such as noise and dust.
02.01.2022 Out and About in Division 9 Last week was busy with the completion of upgrades to a section of footpath on Charlton Esplanade, Pialba and the completion of a footpath including crossovers on Campbell Street, Torquay (between Bideford and Fraser Streets). Safety at the corner of Bideford Street and Truro Street has been improved with the trimming of a hedge and vegetation. There have been a few near misses related to poor visibility as motorists turn from Truro Street into Bi...deford Street. The Scarness Caravan Park is currently operating at 50% occupancy and some local businesses have reported an increase in trade from tourists. The adjacent toilet block has received a much needed fresh coat of paint. This morning I met with local constituents for a Community Chat outside of Vin Veros Cafe in Scarness.
02.01.2022 A New Footpath to be constructed on McLiver Street A new footpath is being constructed to address the missing pathway link between footpaths on Davis Drive and McLiver Street. This week construction works commenced on this important project. Please observe the 40 km speed limit signage along this stretch of road.
01.01.2022 It is always great to catch up with my friends at the Red Cross in Hervey Bay. Today I visited the Red Cross to make a donation. We never know when we may need a blood or plasma transfusion. The Red Cross staff are highly professional and they give you first class refreshments.
