24.01.2022 New lute! Well, actually, it is the lute that Stephanie Haines had lent me for some time for use with Sequenza. It was made by Luciano Faria in 2005 and I've just bought it with funds made available through Helen Thomson's successful Deeply Viol Pozible campaign. Deep gratitude to all who contributed and of course to Helen and Stephanie!
22.01.2022 On Tuesday afternoon I taught a masterclass at Oberlin Conservatory for the guitar majors, students of Professor Stephen Aron. Some very fine performances!
20.01.2022 About to play a couple of sets at MONA but first some exploring...
18.01.2022 Rehearsals have been really enjoyable and I’m looking forward to playing lute in the John Dowland/ Robert Schumann program tomorrow. Great players and a nice room too!
17.01.2022 A great time for practice...
17.01.2022 Brian does amazing work directing the schools program of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society. This is a very moving response by his students to police brutality towards African Americans.
16.01.2022 Some electric guitar! I recorded this track this morning and it shows off the telecaster I assembled when we were in Oberlin OH last year. There are also a few famous guitars from the original Motown Studios in Detroit, Buddy Guy's Blues Club in Chicago and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland... Enjoy!
16.01.2022 Soneto I by Valderrábano. A companion piece to Soneto II that I posted earlier from C16th Spain. Very short, very sweet and strangely Blackadder. https://youtu.be/z3A7WJAqX6E
16.01.2022 I’m a fan of Allan’s guitars. The Evo models I’ve played are gorgeous.
15.01.2022 It has been a pleasure hosting Jacob Cordover at the Conservatorium this week. He gave a tremendous recital on Friday night and an insightful masterclass on Saturday morning. Such a great experience for our classical guitar students at UTAS Conservatorium!
13.01.2022 While things are quiet I’ve been filling my YouTube channel with videos. Here is today’s... a great little piece by Gerald Garcia - Etude No.6 (Afternoon of a Cockroach). Cute title! https://youtu.be/MAANogRAOws
13.01.2022 Spanish music from the 1500s. The photo at the beginning is by the fabulous Anthony McKee. https://youtu.be/K-UQ566j1J0
12.01.2022 To avoid the virus my teaching is moving online via Zoom. Here is my setup and a shot of the screen.
11.01.2022 Master luthier Allan Bull providing a little maintenance to my guitar... with wallabies just outside.
11.01.2022 Apart from classical guitar and lute I also have a slight obsession with electric guitar... Here is a telecaster that I converted to humbucking pickups and finished wiring last night. I included PRS partial coil-split sounds as an option - it’s great. Apologies for the nerdy details... I can talk for some time about all this!
10.01.2022 So good to be playing music with Brett and Matt this morning. With being away in Oberlin and then Covid it had been more than a year since our last outing.
09.01.2022 Coming up to Sequenza’s last two concerts for the year at Hobart Town Hall this Sunday 9th Dec and in Cygnet on the 15th. Such a great program - from Monteverdi to Nick Drake. https://www.facebook.com/974308885931080/posts/2392247417470546/
09.01.2022 I’ve just finished another wonderful week tutoring at summer string camp. It fronts onto Turners Beach on the north west coast of Tasmania. Such a spectacular place... and guitarists might be excited by plans we are making for next January!
08.01.2022 I have a great little practice spot here in Oberlin Ohio. My Allan Bull guitar travelled as carry on for all three flights and sounds as lovely as ever.
07.01.2022 I’ve just heard that my former student Milos Kressig won second prize at the selection recitals of the Swiss youth music competition SJMW. He played Retrato Brasileiro by Baden Powell and Romanze by Mertz. Milos and his father travelled up each week from Bruny Island for lessons. At the end of last year he moved to Switzerland to start high school. Bravo Milos! Well done!
07.01.2022 Dinner after the guitar studio final recital at Fairchild Chapel. It’s been great getting to know the Oberlin guitar majors and hearing their programs take shape.
02.01.2022 That moment... when you have a performance copy of all the scores in program order. Sequenza’s Deeply Viol reward concert is on the 18th of August.
02.01.2022 This is shaping up to be a great concert!
01.01.2022 Just added seven performance dates with five different programs between August and December. Suddenly feeling busy - but my web site is looking better for it! http://www.davidmalone.com.au/concerts/
