21.01.2022 Sometimes you climb out of bed in the morning and you think, 'I’m not going to make it,' but you laugh inside, remembering all the times you’ve felt that way. Charles Bukowski Author, German-American poet, novelist, and short-story writer.
20.01.2022 The forest is never silent and never still but it can seem that way when we crowd it out with our thoughts and words. On Saturday I led a walk along a rainforest creek bed. We walked in silence and heard and felt the forest in its fullest. We also heard our inner selves with a shaper perception and this led to new insights for some. We co-created the experience and many expressed gratitude to the group for this. One of the walkers later texted me to say so much came out of the walk for me. Of course it was a stunning place to be and to be in silence a treat beyond measure. Also personally I feel so much more centred after the walk and realise that I need to bring meditation back into my life with a bigger priority. Very profound. We are looking forward to our next one.
16.01.2022 When I let my body, rather than my head, take charge of responding to the music, I was healing a new way; the stored feelings of trauma and grief emptied out of me. That's when joy began to emerge. I made this short film to share the story that dance can heal in ways that words do not. My "Dancing For Joy: From Stroke To Salsa" documentary is still waiting for your vote. 15.01.2022 This is the latest news from the Focus On Ability film festival on the last day of voting. "We truly hope you are enjoying being part of our 2020 festival. The films have now been viewed in at least 29 countries (minimum 10 views to make the list) which is remarkable. Some new countries on the list are Sudan, Cuba and Barbados. Voting closes midnight tonight (Sydney time, Monday, September 21). I think there are about 5 entries that are battling it out for the $5,000. It is s...uper close, so if you think you're a chance, give it one last push and you may get your entry across the line. The winner of the Most Online Votes receives $5000 cash prize courtesy of Club York. Some truly remarkable things are happening in the comments sections. Not only are people receiving such positive and uplifting support, people are creating new communities and networks. Lives are being uplifted and opportunities are being created."
15.01.2022 Sometimes, being with the sufferer, even in silence, not trying to say the right things, is more than enough. #compassioninaction #resilience #growth
14.01.2022 My nature fix this weekend was watching the new documentary My Octopus Teacher by Craig Foster on Netflix. He was a burnt-out filmmaker when he began swimming at the beach where he spent his boyhood holidays. He discovered a world of kelp and an octopus who he visited every day and became friends with. This experience changed him profoundly and he shows how nature has the power to do this for everyone. He concluded that ‘she (the octopus) taught me to feel that you are a part of this place, not a visitor and that is a huge difference.’ #octopus #myoctopusteacher #naturefix #oceanlife #transformationjourney #posttraumaticgrowth #thepowerofsuffering #youngstrokeaus

10.01.2022 We create suffering by holding onto a rigid sense of Self. There is very little we can control in life but we can adapt our views when reality changes. This is a sign of growth. #compassioninaction #powerofsuffering #resilience
10.01.2022 I am a fan of being in nature and experiencing awe. But can we experience awe in little ways, and with children? Here is Iraq War veteran and outdoors educator Stacy Bare who learns to find wonder and beauty in the small things.
09.01.2022 This weekend’s nature fix was time spent in a friend’s veggie garden. They grow most of their own vegetables and a lot of fruit. I find it soothing being in a food garden where each vegetable and fruit has a different life cycle and a personality of its own, don’t you? #veggiegarden #vegetablegardening #homegardening #lifecycle #backyardgarden #weekendmood #fruitbowl #clothesline #youngstrokeaus

08.01.2022 "Care plays such a critical role in getting better. You're not doing your loved ones any favours if you don't look after yourself first. So you need to make sure you get the 'you' time to look after yourself." --Professor Harry McConnell Watch the full video interview here: https://bit.ly/3o9Qjyo
07.01.2022 Meditation for one! When my brain gets ‘noisey’ I take myself off to a retreat centre in the forest and sleep deeply, walk, read and meditate. It works and my brain thanks me. 06.01.2022 Five years ago, when I learned that dance was one of the best things you can do for brain health and recovery, I decided to take up dancing. What I wasn't expecting was the joy that it would bring. I never imagined, then, that I would be going to Cuba the home of salsa, on a dance tour. 05.01.2022 Thank you, Ann. I wanted to sit down and listen to their stories as a companion, as a fellow human being, as someone who was interested in their story and in their perspective. #compassioninaction #powerofsuffering #Resilience #Growth
05.01.2022 I think I'm able to handle the stories of my storytellers with much more care as I am someone who has experienced trauma. #compassioninaction #growth #resilience #youngstrokeaus #trauma

03.01.2022 This is a beautiful piece from Elliot Dallen, aged 31, and written when he had only a few weeks to live. He offers five pieces of life advice that resonate with the themes that I found in my investigation for ‘The Power of Suffering’. 1. The importance of gratitude 2. A life, if lived well, is long enough 3. It’s important to let yourself be vulnerable and connect with others 4. Do something for others... 5. Protect the planet https://www.theguardian.com//terminal-cancer-live-cancer-l

03.01.2022 When I think through my story, I managed to distill the wisdom that I gained in one simple statement. I think that when you walk away with this statement and you implement it in your life, it will cause you to find peace, calmness, to have warm relationships with your fellow human beings, it will improve societies, and it may bring about the cessation of war. 02.01.2022 Many disabilities don’t look like ‘disability’ they’re invisible to others but this doesn’t make the disability less real. Check out this podcast for discussion on what it’s like to have an invisible disability, like mental fatigue and memory loss, after a stroke and how to help others deal with it.

01.01.2022 On my dance tour of Cuba, I wanted to recreate the type of dance videos I saw coming out of Cuba on Facebook and YouTube. So, I organised a local videographer to film me in Santiago and in Havana. Once back home, with the help of my publisher who interviewed me on film about my experience, we created a short documentary. In this film, I tell the story of how I chose dancing for brain health and found joy. Vote for the film "Dancing For Joy: From Stroke To Salsa" by clicking here: https://bit.ly/33yRw9J
