19.01.2022 So often when I make the foolish mistake to discuss any sort of theory, there will be long posts explaining why that is incorrect, and that the teachings of som...e other expert are the true word--- And, often, my instinct is that the poster does not have much of a personal resume, of past horses trained or competed, of riders who have been taught---It is book knowledge untempered by years of in the trenches practical knowledge. Book knowledge IS part of the learning process, but how something OUGHT to work is not always the same as how something DOES work. We need both lots of theory and lots of practice, and it takes less time to build up a well of theory than of practice. It's sort of like the young veterinarian, fresh out of vet school, full of all the latest theories, versus the 20-30-40 year veteran practitioner. who may not have some of the current theories instantly to hand, but who has spent thousands of hours working with real animals, and who has a sense of what is what without even knowing why. Learn it, yes, but also get out there and earn it. It's a big horse world out there-----

09.01.2022 The creation and installation of confidence, that enables this first photo to perhaps later become the second, will usually have many bumps along the way, false... starts, snags, mishaps, even injuries and downright failures. Life is rarely an Uncle Walt (Walt Disney or Walter Farley) tale of triumph over all odds. More often the Black will get caught in wire, hurt a tendon, just before the big race. Or the kid will fall off the mustang that she trained in the moonlight, and break her arm, days before the Makeover. But for the first kid to become the second, the damage will have to be healed, confidence slowly regained, perhaps a better horse-rider match found, because we need to constantly remember and refer to Jack LeGoff's famous formula about this entire process: Which is---(post this on your refrigerator door where you will read it every single day) "Boldness comes from confidence. Confidence comes from success. It is therefore the job of the trainer (of horse and rider) to create many situations that virtually guarantee success.)

05.01.2022 To become a great rider (hell to become great at ANYTHING) You have to fall in love with the process. Because that is what it is about. It is ABOUT the proces...s. In other words, you have to be willing to do the work. You have to want it bad enough to endure the struggle to get back on the horse when you’ve come off unexpectedly to come back the next day after a bad ride and do it all again (hopefully better) You have to be willing to subject yourself to the bad rides as well as the good rides. Because they are not all good rides. As much as we wish it could be, anything you want to pursue in life is not all unicorns and rainbows. It is hard rides. It is coming face to face of your inadequacies, how you made a bad decision, how you became impatient, how you didn’t know the answer, how you let fear overtake you, how you are imperfect. Repeatedly. To face these hard rides and hate them and yet do it again - ANYWAY. To do this you have to try. And you have to really want it. I mean really REALLY want it. The daily drudgery of practicing, unglamorous seat lessons, coming back to ride again even when you felt defeated last time, work OFF the horse to improve your strength and suppleness (because riding is athletic, too, you know!), to put in the study time to cultivate your intellect and understanding, hauling water buckets in sub-zero temperatures, mucking stalls when you would rather be at home on the couch watching The Bachelor, repairing fences in the pouring rain, paying the big vet bill that means no vacation for you this year It’s a mountain of a dream and it is yours (and yours alone) to climb. You have to not just like the IDEA of your dream, or the IDEA of climbing this mountain, the IDEA of being a great rider You have to embrace the struggle to also reap the reward. You cannot get the result without the process. Life does not work out that way. It is the riders who learn how to ENJOY the process those are the ones who make it. This is part grit but it goes way beyond that (because you can have grit but still not make it). You have to really REALLY want it so much that you can see the pleasure in the struggle. You have to fall in love with the process.

04.01.2022 Most riders who event at the preliminary level in eventing started riding before they were in their mid to late 50s. Walt's wife had died a few years earlier, a...nd someone told him---"Hey, if you want to meet fit, pretty women, you ought to take up horseback riding. It's full of them." So Walt, not being stupid, did just that, but as he got increasingly hooked on the sport, his competitive side began to emerge. After all, he'd been a boxing champion in the US Navy during World War 2, and in 1946, he'd finished 25th in the Boston Marathon. Walt won his first novice event at Huntington Farm when he was 69, but right after that, he got his big break. David O'Brien had concluded his advanced career on Sail On Simcoe (Timmy) and he offered the ride to Walt, and Walt started right out at the training level. Then, when Walt was 72, he moved up to preliminary (photo) and 3 years later, they competed at Bromont, Walt's first long format 3-day. Walt told me something---He said, "Denny--Push me as hard as you push the 20 year olds. You aren't doing me any favors if you cut me any slack." Now, sure, we are not all hard ass athletes like this guy was, but who wants to be patronized and babied? I far prefer to be pushed than to be treated like some incompetent, and just maybe we can become far more than we ever thought possible---

03.01.2022 I challenge you to go to about any dressage warm up area and NOT HEAR some coach saying, "Inside leg to outside rein." If not in those specific words, the idea ...of using inside aids to sweep energy to the containing outside aids. By inside and outside, it means inside or outside a curve or circle. Here, Carrie is riding Cordi on a righthand sweep, so her RIGHT (inside) aids are creating a push to the LEFT into the containing (outside) aids of her left leg, arm, reins. Why? What is to be gained by this? What is its purpose? The big one is because it makes that inside hind leg into a weight lifting leg, because by pushing Cordi both forward and out to the left, where the left aids can contain and redirect that energy sweep back to the right, it is inducing Cordi to bring her right hind leg further forward and further to the left than it would otherwise track. It sends that right hind leg toward a place that is between her front legs, so that, by placing the leg more under the center of the mass, each time Cordi straightens her inside hind leg, that leg now has to lift more weight. As anyone knows, weight lifting, done correctly, over time, builds more strength. We build lifting strength one hind leg at a time, by switching directions, so that we LOAD first one hind leg, and then the other, back and forth. So, at a basic level, that familiar, "Inside leg to outside rein," is a way of saying, "Pump more iron." If you can't grasp the physics of this, and you want to learn how to turn your horse into a stronger athlete, go get some good coaching from someone who does understand.

01.01.2022 Jack LeGoff used to say that the three things that an aspiring rider MUST HAVE in order to become a good rider were: 1. A good seat--- 2. A good seat--- 3. A go...od seat--- Only when the flexible body of the rider can merge and blend with the movements of the horse can the rider have good hands, and be able to clearly control the interplay of driving aids into containing aids. So if you have high riding goals, start with developing a deep, supple, following seat, remembering another simple mantra--- "Good riders don't bounce." If the stark and rather harsh reality of Jack's edict offends or discourages you, skip this post. It is not aimed at the average recreational rider, but I do know from personal experience that good old LeGoff was not known for sugar-coating what he said---
