24.01.2022 The McGowan Labor Government is delivering on our commitment to establish two 'one-stop hubs' to make it easier for victims of family and domestic violence to access services. These one-stop hubs will provide a specialist service for women and families experiencing family and domestic violence. They will bring support services together and wrap them around those who need them using a 'one-stop' approach. This model, which is new to WA, will make it easier for women and children impacted by family and domestic violence to get help sooner in a safe space within their own community.
23.01.2022 The dynamic team at Audioplay create immersive digital experiences that allow kids to step into a story and physically play as a character. Audioplay recently ...received an Arts U-15K grant to share what they’ve learned about this emerging digital artform with leading WA theatre artists Tim Watts and Arielle Gray. Watts and Gray are the creative team behind the internationally successful, family-friendly theatre production, ‘New Owner’. The creative exploration between Audioplay and Gray and Watts will push the creative limits of the form, build the skills of the artists and lay the groundwork for a new series of immersive experiences for kids. The department is promoting its successful grant and funding recipients through an ongoing promotional campaign called Showcase. Showcase profiles the creativity, skill and talent of artists and arts organisations in WA through media, social media platforms and outdoor screens across the city. For more information visit www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au/showcase
23.01.2022 Today, two new offences take effect in Western Australia to protect victims of family and domestic violence. Research tells us that non-lethal strangulation is ...one of the strongest indicators of an increased risk of homicide. There are often no visible injuries, but it can still have severe medical consequences for the victim. To reflect the seriousness of this conduct, our new law against ‘suffocation and strangulation’ means it can be charged and prosecuted as a specific criminal offence. Persistent family violence is now also a criminal offence, recognising that physical and psychological abuse against a partner often forms a pattern of offending. It applies to an act of family violence against one victim on three or more occasions, over a 10-year period. These changes are part of the McGowan Government’s ongoing efforts to stop family and domestic violence in the community. They put WA at the forefront of criminalising this behaviour. By holding perpetrators to account, we can save lives.
22.01.2022 Before the 2017 election, I consulted closely with the Pat Thomas House board, Allambee Counselling and other local service providers, and it became apparent that there was a need for a new family and domestic violence refuge service in Peel. I’m very proud that the McGowan Government has now delivered a new refuge for the region that will begin helping women and children who have fled family and domestic violence and are in need of accommodation and support. This new therapeutic refuge will provide a vital service in the Peel community, delivering a significant increase in refuge capacity and additional support.
21.01.2022 Fantastic to hear that cameras have started rolling on the production of 'Blueback' down in the Great Southern! Once again, WA is producing a large scale cinematic work and filming locations such as the Ningaloo Reef and the Great Southern will feature heavily. The family friendly show centres on Abby, a child who befriends a wild groper while diving.... The production of Blueback will create local jobs and help further develop our growing film industry.
21.01.2022 This summer we don’t have our usual influx of international backpackers looking for seasonal jobs in the regions. This has meant many of our local agriculture, tourism and hospitality businesses have had to look at new ways to employ staff. The McGowan Government’s Work and Wander out Yonder campaign is encouraging young West Aussies to head out to the regions to get a job as well as offering them travel and accommodation incentives. ... With schools and university wrapping up for the year it is the perfect time for regional businesses to get online and list their job vacancies or use a job matching service that is currently free for regional businesses. We have had lots of regional businesses give it a go and find great young WA workers. If your business is looking for staff, check it out at www.wa.gov.au/workandwander

14.01.2022 Funded by the State Government and delivered by Communicare, Breathing Space provides a residential service for men who have been violent in family relationships but want to change their ways. Breathing Space provides an opportunity for men to take responsibility for their use of violence and abuse. The program makes the perpetrators of domestic violence accountable for their behaviour and provides the support they need to change. This is good for men who want to change and for the people in their lives.

09.01.2022 Established in 2017, the McGowan Government’s RSPCA Pets in Crisis Program helps women and children fleeing domestic violence, by temporarily fostering out their pets while they get back on their feet. We know that some women stay in violent relationships because they can't take their pets with them and fear they'll be hurt or killed. By providing temporary foster care for their pets, we’re providing practical help to support them on their path out of violent relationships.

06.01.2022 I am absolutely delighted to hear that filming has started on the local production of Blueback, a film set in the Great Southern and Ningaloo regions of WA. Based on the bestselling novel by Tim Winton, the story features Abby, a child who befriends a wild groper while diving. This production will create local jobs in the regions and further develop our growing screen industry.
05.01.2022 You've probably seen the deals on regional WA airfares that we've secured over the past couple of years. They've helped tens of thousands of people get out to ...regional WA, supporting local jobs and our local economy. Well, we've got another one - and this is the biggest one yet. We've partnered with Virgin Australia and Qantas to deliver 50,000 affordable airfares to or from Broome, Exmouth and Kununurra - and they are on sale now. Our State's beautiful north offers some of the most unique and sought-after experiences and adventures available anywhere on the planet. The tourism industry in the State’s north has felt the impacts of COVID-19 the most, with its remoteness making it more difficult to attract visitors from within WA. The last time we offered discounted flights between Perth and Broome and Perth and Kununurra - they sold out within a week. So don't wait - do your bit for WA tourism and jobs by booking your trip up north today. Bookings can be made online or through your local travel agent. Go out, wander out yonder and support WA jobs.
04.01.2022 We will end the privatisation of services at Peel Health Campus and deliver a $152 million major redevelopment of the hospital. Our plan include: - 63 additiona...l inpatient beds (which will deliver 219 public beds); - 12 chemotherapy places; - 20 mental health inpatient beds; - one additional operating theatre; - at least 15 palliative care hospice beds; - more outpatient services; - new build of medical imaging services; and -the introduction of a 10-bed Mental Health Emergency Centre. Additionally, the emergency department will be reconfigured, along with the reconfiguration and expansion of the day procedure unit. This new investment comes on top of the $10 million upgrades the McGowan Labor Government is already delivering at Peel Health Campus. It means locals will benefit from what will be the biggest upgrade of the Peel Health Campus in its history. The redevelopment and expansion of the hospital, and the plan to bring hospital services in-house, is only possible because of our efforts to get the Budget under control and our continued responsible financial management.
04.01.2022 The Peel women’s refuge, opening later this year, will be WA’s first therapeutic women’s refuge. I am very pleased that the McGowan Government is delivering on this election commitment. The refuge will be the first of its kind in WA, tailored to provide specialist person-centred responses for women escaping family and domestic violence who also have mental health concerns and/or harm from alcohol and other drugs. We’ve also announced a further $4 million allowing for an expansion of six additional accommodation units at each of WA’s new women’s refuges Kwinana and Peel a doubling of capacity.
