25.01.2022 Fantastic work from Robbie, Linda and Danielle today as they played one of their first games at Emerald Lakes. They all played well and learned especially about how to transfer their range swing to the course. We also had an amazing moment on the last hole where from 35m to the hole Danielle stepped up, visualised her shot and pitched her shot to the exact point we talked about and rolled perfectly into the hole. There was a big cheer as the team made a birdie!! Such an awesome moment Ladies!!

How to Play from Uneven Lies Playing from uneven lies can be quite a challenge however once understanding the causes and effects that these lies can have on your ball flight, you can manage to navigate effectively around any golf course. Firstly Uphill and Downhill lies wont necessarily impact the ball’s direction but it will impact the trajectory. The key to playing from these two lies is ensuring you stand on the angle of the slope. When playing from an Uphill lie, the ball will shoot off higher and thus decreasing your overall distance. If you are a 7 iron distance out, the uphill lie will turn this club into an 8 iron (depending on the steepness of the slope). Therefore if you are a 7 iron distance out, change your club into a 6 iron so that you can successfully adjust for the slope. This is the same when confronted with a downhill slope. If you are a 7 iron distance out, standing with the slope will actually turn your 7 iron into a 6 iron as the slope will encourage you to de-loft the club. Therefore the same rule applies to an uphill slope however this time choose an 8 iron if you’re a 7 iron distance out. When playing off both these slopes it may be an idea for you to reduce your swing to a three quarter swing so that you can stay in balance. When confronted with the ball above your feet, you’ll have to factor in the effect of direction once the ball is struck. When the ball is above your feet, the swing will get a lot ‘flatter’ causing the ball to draw to the left. Therefore aim to the right of the hole to allow for the ball turning left (How much right will depend on how much the ball is above your feet). When the ball is below your feet, the swing will tend to get a lot steeper causing the ball to fade to the right. Therefore when confronted with this lie, aim a little left of the hole to allow for the ball turning to the right. If you follow these guidelines, you will successfully navigate off any surface.

23.01.2022 Fantastic work today for these guys! Marcia, Zi and Simon. They have seen me for around 3 months and their improvement has been out of sight! They played ambrose today and all of them played remarkably well for their first ever time on the course.... They scored 3 pars together in 6 holes for their first time. Looking forward to working with them in the future!

23.01.2022 Client David Reeves came in for a lesson yesterday. A simple fix with his grip allowed massive Improvement. His right hand slipped down the club at impact. He simply ensured his right hand stayed on top of his left all throughout the swing. This ensured that he was able to hit down on the ball instead of 'scooping his wrists' up to make contact. 'Looks like the new grip works' by client David Reeves

21.01.2022 One Week Special!! Golf Tune Up Package Including a Course Lesson!! 2 X 1 Hour Lessons + Playing Lesson for $260 for 1 Person! Valued $440 For 2 People $320... Article on the Importance of the Right Knee for Fixing Slicing and Creating Power: The right knee plays a pivotal role for moving the weight on the downswing. Often times people can have great sequence as they start the downswing however it can often fall short as they approach impact. The left hip starts the downswing as normal but as you move through the ball, you must use the right knee and inside of the right foot to drive the weight through the ball. This will ensure that the lower half doesn’t break down and that the upper half doesn’t take over. Often times when I see someone slicing on the driving range, it is almost inevitable that their downswing is dictated by their arms without using their legs. Once proper examination is done, it is almost a forgone conclusion that the right knee has remained stagnant. In a nutshell as mentioned in previous reports, the most common reason for a slice is swinging the club with the arms instead of utilising the legs. A great drill to use when trying to utilise the right knee is setting up to the ball with your right toe pointed as much as you can to the target (see picture). You will find that the right heel is in fact above the ground when you do this. All you need to do then is keep the pressure on the right toe all the way through the swing. Just try this with a three quarter swing as you will find your swing will be quite restrictive. Once you try this you will find that you will get the sense of moving the right knee and lower half through the ball. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Happy golfing!! http://www.emeraldlakesgolf.net.au//123-david-waters-pga-g 'To get better, you must master the simple things first' 'Platinum Improvement Package' for $1045 'This package is suited for players who have a strong 3 month goal to meet targeting on course performance' It includes: 6 X 1 Hour Lessons 6 X 30 Min Lessons 2 X Evaluations - One before commencement of lessons and one again after 6 lessons to track progress. 21.01.2022 Spots now available for the next Ladies and 4 Week Challenge Programs!! Also an article regarding 'How to Avoid Hitting the Cricket Shot in Golf' The Ladies Program commences on the 15th of November and the 4 Week Challenge on the 18th of November.... Both programs are open to players of all skill levels. There are two options for the program: Option 1: 4 Weeks plus Course Lesson $265 Option 2: 4 Weeks Only $199 If you would like to register please contact myself on M:0423524673 or email:[email protected] 'How to Avoid Hitting the Cricket Shot in Golf' One of the biggest problem areas when teaching beginners is understanding the concept that all golfers must finish with their weight on the front foot. Anybody who hasn’t been taught will always have a tendency to keep their weight on the back foot. This is because it seems logical that in order to get the ball up in the air, we must keep the weight back and scoop under the ball. One of the first aspects that I address when a beginner student comes to me is understanding the concept of hitting down on the ball as well moving the weight onto the front foot. If you are unsure whether you are transferring your weight onto the front foot then take note of what kind of shots you are hitting. If a person keeps their weight on the back foot, then the most common shots will be a ‘heavy’ shot (taking too much grass behind the ball), a ‘thin’ shot (impacting the middle of the ball causing a low shot without spin) and a ‘hook’ shot as when the weight stays back, the hands will tend to flip to the left. The way in which I get the student to feel the weight moving onto the front foot is by implementing the ‘step’ drill. This where I will tell the student to start with their feet together and make a backswing. Next I will tell them to take a side step forward with their left (right if a left hander) while keeping their upper half and head in the same position. After they have taken the step with the upper half remaining in the same position, they can then turn the whole body through and finish with their weight on the front foot. A good indicator that their weight has transferred through properly, is they should be able to lift their right foot without losing balance. If you apply this drill, you will transfer your weight onto the front foot and hit crisper, straighter shots!!

20.01.2022 One Week Reminder for the 4 Week Golf Challenge Commencing September 9th! I have a couple of spots remaining so if you would like to book your spot just email myself at [email protected] or M:0423524673. There are two different options for the program:... Option 1: 8 Hours of Coaching plus Course Lesson $265 Option 2: 8 Hours of Coaching $199 Also attached is an article: How to Never 3 Putt!! Throughout my golfing life I have always been known as a very good putter. In particular, ensuring that I never three putt from any range. There is nothing more crippling to a round than having more putts than you intended on the greens. When I view my students’ statistics of their last round, the first aspect that I look at is the amount of three putts they had. When I look at a plan of reducing the amount of shots that my student has, it will always start with ensuring they always walk off with no more than two putts. This is an area of the game that you can control quite well versus other areas which include trying to always hit a straight drive. The method that I use is knowing exactly how far to take my stroke back for a 10m putt. Of course, when I take it back a certain distance, I must also follow through the same distance. When I view a longish putt on the range or indeed the course, I will always ‘step out the distance of the putt’ so that I know exactly what Im dealing with. You can do this inconspicuously so that it doesn’t attract too much attention from your playing partners if you feel self-conscience. On the practice putting green I will master putting my ball exactly 10m every time. The key to keeping this stroke consistent is making sure the speed of the stroke and the tension of my hands remain the same throughout the stroke. Once you’ve established what your 10m stroke is, you can experiment with other distances. For eg. If you practice a 20m stroke, all you need to do then is double your stroke. But the key to this again is you must keep the speed of the stroke the same and you must keep the tension in your hands the same. The same rule applies to any length putt. If it’s a 40m putt then you quadruple your stroke and if it’s a 5m putt you would halve your stroke. Of course this can change depending on the speed of the greens. If you find that the greens that you will be playing are much quicker than normal, then you must make the adjustment. Keeping the 10m reference in mind, if the greens are a lot quicker than what you have been practicing then your 10m stroke may be in fact a 12m stroke. Therefore you just make the adjusted calculations. I recommend that when playing a new course, that you spend at least 15 minutes before teeing off on the greens testing the speed. If you follow this simple idea you will dramatically reduce your 3 putts or eradicate them forever!! Happy Golfing!! http://www.emeraldlakesgolf.net.au//123-david-waters-pga-g

A ‘duck hook’ is a shot that goes sharply left at the moment of impact. There are three different reasons for this errant shot. ... The first one is an extremely closed clubface when the backswing reaches its first position, second when the body hasn’t turned sufficiently on the backswing and thirdly when the body hasn’t moved on to the front foot when following through. The first aspect to address is to make sure that at the first position (club is parallel to the ground) of the golf swing that the ‘toe’ of the club is roughly pointing up to the sky. It doesn’t point directly up to the sky but on the same angle as the spine. By ensuring this clubface is square early in the backswing, the forearms will rotate properly and hence be able to deliver a square club face at the ball. The second check point that you must fix with your swing is ensuring sufficient hip turn. Make sure when swinging back that your left shoulder goes under your chin, hips have turned 45 degrees and the left knee has moved about 20 degrees. The golf swing is very much a reactionary movement meaning that whatever you do on the backswing, you will tend to replicate on the follow through. Therefore if you have sufficient turn on the way back, then you will turn properly through the ball causing your hands to be less active as they are forced to follow the body. The last movement that you need to have in place when rectifying the ‘duck hook’ is ensuring you always transfer your weight on to the front foot. This means as you start your downswing, you initiate with your left hip followed by an unwinding of your body and moving everything on to your front foot. This will ensure that the arms always stay in front of the chest rather than working independently and hence ‘flipping’ the clubface left through impact. A great drill to use when practicing to rectify the ‘duck hook’ is training yourself to know how to hit a slice. Rehearse feeling the club face slightly ‘open’ during impact while keeping the hands slightly forward. The ‘duck hook’ action is the exact opposite to a slice because the club face tends to be forward of the hands at impact. Also put a shaft down on the other side of the ball pointing slightly left and aim to swing on that path coming through. This will start changing the ball flight to slightly higher and straighter as the swing path and clubface are starting to get back into the right position. Lastly and most importantly, make sure you transfer your weight. Happy Golfing!! http://www.emeraldlakesgolf.net.au//123-david-waters-pga-g

18.01.2022 Get started with your golfing goals for 2020! Exciting Lesson Specials! Also I explain how much to turn in the backswing:... How Much Should I Turn? The word 'turn' in the golf swing has been a term in golf that has been largely misunderstood over the years. Over the decades the degree of turn in the swing has changed considerably. In the early Greg Norman and Ballesteros days we saw a lot of turn and movement particularly with the lower half. As years have gone by the realization has been that in order to create a more efficient swing, less movement and turn needs to occur in the golf swing. There are three major areas that require turn in the golf swing, these being: shoulders, hips and knees. Since the upper half starts the backswing, the shoulders move first and thus will move the farthest at 90 degrees (under the chin), next come the hips at 45 degrees and lastly the knees will move around 20 degrees. Turn also has an impact on swing path. If you turn too much on your backswing, the club will tend to travel on an inside path and thus may cause an 'over the top' swing or a swing that starts on an extreme inside path on the way down. Which one will be determined by your transition specifically whether you use your legs to start the downswing or your upper half. Insufficient turn often causes an upright swing and thus will become more likely for the club to travel on a vertical plane on the way down. This will result in 'fat' shots and 'slice' shots. http://www.emeraldlakesgolf.net.au//123-david-waters-pga-g

18.01.2022 Five Days Remaining for the next Ladies and 4 Week Challenge Programs!! Also an article regarding 'What's the Deal with the Downswing?' The Ladies Program commences this Sunday the 15th of November and the 4 Week Challenge on the 18th of November.... Both programs are open to players of all skill levels. There are two options for the program: Option 1: 4 Weeks plus Course Lesson $265 Option 2: 4 Weeks Only $199 If you would like to register please contact myself on M:0423524673 or email:[email protected] The downswing is an aspect of the golf swing which is often misunderstood. The muscle movements in the downswing are the exact opposite to the backswing. The biggest mistake I see is that people start the downswing with their upper half. The biggest reason for this is that quite simply the club is attached to the arms therefore it is natural without prior knowledge to try and hit the ball by starting the downswing with the upper half. The correct way to start the downswing is to move the left hip first before the upper half. This ensures that the club approaches the ball on a flatter swing plane thus producing shots that are cleaner with more distance. As mentioned the left hip will go first before the upper half through a combination of lateral movement and turn. This ensures that the body continues to move through the ball whilst squaring up the club face through turning. It is also important to note that on the way down, the arms should stay fairly close to the body with the wrists remaining hinged until the moment of impact. Key indicators of a downswing that leads with the upper half are large divots, slice shots and pull shots. This is mainly because the club is approaching on a steep angle causing an outside-in swing path. This basically means hitting toward ten o'clock on the way through instead of 12 (which is neutral) or 1 o'clock (which promotes a draw). The opposite can happen also with the legs pushing too far forward early on the downswing. This causes the upper half to be stuck behind the ball which means also hitting behind the ball. It may also cause hook shots to the left or block shots to the right. Ensure on the way down as mentioned earlier that the left hip does go first, followed closely by the upper half. If you can achieve this, you will produce a swing that is physically easier, more powerful and consistent.

14.01.2022 Hi I hope everyone is remaining safe during this period. Also I wanted to inform everyone that yes we are open!! This has been stated as a great form of exercise and one of the few remaining sports to be given the stamp of approval.... This can be a great opportunity to work at your golf game and reach your golfing goals!! I have included my weekly article informing how best to play from uneven lies. Hope to see you at the course!! Uneven Lies: Playing from uneven lies can be quite a challenge however once understanding the causes and effects that these lies can have on your ball flight, you can manage to navigate effectively around any golf course. To secure your spot just email P.G.A Coach David Waters at [email protected] or M:0423524673 Also included is a great sequencing drill. Sequencing your body to work at the right time is very important so the uppet half and lower half can work together edficiently resulting in more distance amd straighter shots.... The Importance of Sequencing Hideki is one of the best players in the world and there’s no doubt his swing is quite distinct to the others. In his swing, he pauses momentarily at the top before he starts his downswing. This is in fact a brilliant move as it ensures he can feel how the downswing initiates. During my lessons when I’m trying help my students work on sequencing, I’ll often ask them to pause at the top. I will especially ask those students who have an ‘over the top’ move to perform this pause. Pausing at the top enables you to set the downswing by shifting a little lateral with the left hip followed by a full rotation of the body driving forward. When you start with the left hip, it prevents the upper half from going first which is invaluable as moving the upper half first causes slice shots and diminished power. Therefore when practicing next time, spend a little time on pausing momentarily at the top and feel the left hip bump forward an inch before moving the whole body through. If you have any further questions about applying this move, please don’t hesitate to ask. 08.01.2022 How to Use the Left Arm to Dictate the Golf Swing!! If you have ever been to one of my lessons, you may have heard me state that in order to swing effectively that you must rule the swing with the left arm. I once discovered this when I in fact had a lesson when I was a junior training to be a good player. My coach at the time basically said to me that I was using too much right hand. He then explained the causes of using too much right hand and even stating in a tongue an...d cheek way 'that the right hand was in fact the killer to the golf swing and that the worse thing that God ever created was giving us a right hand.' I didn't really understand this at the time but as he got me to hit balls with just my left arm, I started to feel quite strong and an incredible sense of power and extension as I impacted the ball with the back of my left hand. If you have ever tried to hit the ball with the left arm, you most likely would have been like me and topped the ball on your first few shots. But after some time with great balance and control, you would soon be able impact the ball with the left arm only. I used to in fact practice for hours just using my left arm. It was incredible how much distance you obtain even with just using your left arm. When training your left arm, you don't necessarily have to hit balls with your left arm but you'll need to stick to a 5:1 ratio. Meaning swing with your left arm for five times then stepping over to the ball and committing to a swing. Its important though that when hitting balls when placing the right hand on the club that the swing is still ruled by the left arm. The mental process I talk about is feeling as though the right hand is a 'passenger' being ruled by the left arm. Once you have mastered the left arm movement you will strike the ball very solidly as well obtain more distance. If you are having trouble striking the ball consistently, you can take a video of your swing as it goes through impact. If you notice the left arm breaking down causing a flipping of the wrists or a break with the left arm, it will often mean the right hand has taken over. After take a video of your left arm swinging through impact and see the difference . You will find that without the right hand, the left arm naturally performs its function. www.davidwatersgolf.com http://www.emeraldlakesgolf.net.au//123-david-waters-pga-g

03.01.2022 Less than Two Weeks Remaining now available for the next Ladies and 4 Week Challenge Programs!! Also an article regarding 'How to Shape the Ball' The Ladies Program commences on the 15th of November and the 4 Week Challenge on the 18th of November.... Both programs are open to players of all skill levels. There are two options for the program: Option 1: 4 Weeks plus Course Lesson $265 Option 2: 4 Weeks Only $199 If you would like to register please contact myself on M:0423524673 or email:[email protected] This is an article on how to 'Shape the Ball' Shaping the ball from right to left or left to right is not a difficult thing to do. It can feel like this at first especially if you are prone to hitting a hook or a slice. The challenge is judging how much to turn the ball. For someone who has a predictable slice or hook and haven't had any previous experience shaping the ball, the first aspect would be to just attempt the other direction without trying to control how much. You can do this purely by rotating or under rotating the club. If you want to turn the ball to the left for a right hander, I would focus on speeding up the club face through impact and letting the right arm pass the left arm. To a hit a slice to the right I would focus on holding the face open more coming through impact. At first it might take a while to achieve this without prior experience but the more you attempt this, the better you can get. Now to control how much the ball will turn to the left and how much it will turn to the right and also where the ball will start will firstly take a swing path that is fairly neutral. This is because without a reasonably neutral swing path, you will always find it difficult to control where the ball will start. Now considering your swing path is fairly neutral the way to control where the ball starts and where it finishes is down to your alignment. First of all to control where the ball starts ensure to aim the body (includes your shoulders, feet, hips and knees) at this target. To control where the ball finishes simply aim the clubface at this target. Once the alignment is positioned the task then is to make sure you swing toward the line of your feet to ensure the ball starts where your body is pointing. If you do this you will start to control where the ball starts as well where it finishes as when your alignment is positioned this way it makes your clubface either rotate more or rotate less thus impacting the direction of the ball in the air. Enjoy practicing this drill and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
