23.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS- Dr THOMAS WILLIAMS Dr William's PhD involved research in a developing agriculture system. Water buffalo are important milk producers in the s...mall holder dairy farming systems of Pakistan. Dr William's research focused on parasites-specifically gastrointestinal nematodes, looking at their prevalence in water buffalo in Pakistan and in the extensive grazing enterprises in Australia. His research found several farm management factors that could reduce infection. He also identified potentially a new species of gastrointestinal nematodes, that had not been previously described #R4D #ResearchForDevelopment #RAID

20.01.2022 Live larvae on the loose! It’s not everyday we see larvae whilst doing worm egg counts - and for good reason (even though we do find them quite interesting!) Larvae seen like this in a sample means that they have hatched from the eggs. This indicates a sample is not fresh, and therefore the worm egg count result may not be as accurate as it should be ... 17.01.2022 Yes you read correctly! Unfortunately, this figure also includes the drenches that aren’t working as effectively as they should... We know we talk about this a lot (sorry not sorry ) but it’s a lot of money and time you could be saving not to mention how much of an improvement to animal production and welfare that could be achieved if you knew you were using a drench that was working. Thinking about doing a drench test? Follow that gut feeling! 15.01.2022 It’s not just our crops and livestock that are taking advantage of these sunny days and great rainfall Infective larvae on pastures can thrive in these ideal conditions, and as a result more can, and will be picked up by grazing livestock It is important to note that younger stock starting to graze are more susceptible, so the chance of an unwanted worm burden developing is high. Over the last couple of weeks, the Dawbuts lab have seen increasingly high WECs This is ...due to internal parasites becoming more active with moist warm weather conditions In these temperate conditions larvae can survive in your pasture for extended periods of time, so it is important to manage your stocking rates carefully and monitor faecal counts to avoid and prevent outbreak. #wormywednesday #parasitology #diagnostics #lab #infective #larvae #grazing #temperate #weneedawormemoji

10.01.2022 Parascaris equorum eggs have very interesting features that assist with their survival These eggs have a very thick multi-layered outer shell which means they can survive a long period in harsh, and ever-changing environmental conditions, sometimes up to 10 years! Their sticky outer layer allows them to adhere to many surfaces including other horses (hair, skin, teats etc.) and their environment (pasture etc.). As a result, ascarids are more of an issue during foalin...g season (right now!). Foals up to 6 months of age are more susceptible because they pick up eggs off their mother’s udder and have not developed immunity to this worm. This, alongside the fact that eggs can be transmitted through milk, has earnt P.equorum its common name of the ‘milk worm’ To help prevent infection, have a worm egg count (WEC) done on your mares before foaling, and treat horses that are positive. Brood mares should be run on clean paddocks and extra attention be given to manure management and disposal. Teats should also be checked regularly to make sure they are clear of any faecal material. Foals like to poke their nose around and lick and chew on objects around them, so its imperative to make sure their surrounding areas have been cleanedHaving a WEC done on your foals will also be beneficial to monitor for any burdens. #wormywednesdays #parascarisequorum #ascaris #milkworm #survival #equine #veterinaryparasitology #wormeggcounts #wormeggs #foalingseason #weneedawormemoji

01.01.2022 Wool leader urges pain relief after activist priorities named Australian sheep producers must take a holistic approach to current and future animal welfare chal...lenges, but be cognisant of global market trends, according to WoolProducers Australia president Ed Storey. In the recent Wool Connect conference, FOUR PAWS International’s head of campaigns farm animals and nutrition Nina Jamal said the next priority animal welfare issues would be other mutilations like tail docking, castration and also reducing stress during shearing. Mr Storey said this highlighted the need for Australian producers to adopt best practice animal welfare practices for mulesing and other procedures.
