22.01.2022 BETTER HISTORY, MORE HONESTY The Director's newsletter for 30 November. Taking 25 years as an average human generation, a quick calculation shows that each of you has had 4,096 ancestors in the 300 years since 1720. This fact is obscured by our obsession with patrilinear reckoning, which counts only the male line. Not only is that sexist, but it conceals the truth that all notions of racial purity or claims to noble or exalted birth amount to little more than day-dreaming! ...Continue reading

20.01.2022 The Guinigi tower is one of the few remaining towers in the center of the city of Lucca, in Tuscany. The structure was built by a family of rich and powerful merchants in the fourteenth century, 45 meters high, on the top it houses a hanging garden with seven trees.

19.01.2022 Wanda Skowronska is a Catholic psychologist and author living and working mainly in Sydney. She introduces her chapter entitled ‘Successful Orwellian Resistance in Confusing Times’ in Heart to Heart below. In our era, we are confronted with pervasive ideological mantras. We can wring our hands in dismay or try to confront them by exposing them. My essay focuses on humour which has long been an effective weapon in puncturing irrational mindsets. I look at English writer ...Andrew Doyle, who created a fictional character, Titantia McGrath, identifying as 'non-binary, polyracial and ecosexual' ; also at physicist Alan Sokal who mixed vacuous philosophy with physics and got published in a serious academic journal; and at British Helen Pluckrose and her friends who takes aim at Critical theory, reducing it to gibberish - and who also got published in several serious academic journals! Remember humour is an effective weapon. George Orwell did not write a long tome about Communism - he wrote Animal Farm - and his witty story became the iconic expression of resistance to an era. 19.01.2022 Wonderful buildings of Crete... with over 7000 churches on the island, it's only fitting that this series starts with a church. Outside the village of Stylos in... Apokoronas you will find the beautifully renovated 12th centurry Byzantine church of the Panagia Serviotisa. You will have to look for it as it is surrounded by mature oak and walnut trees and many orange groves, thus not easily visible... By the church are also ruins of what would possibly have been part of the monastery of Agios Iaonnis Theologos, the church and graveyard of which can be visited in Stylos itself. Don't forget to visit the fossil of the sea mermaid while you're there! #magicalcrete #crete #kreta #creatingmemories #cretechurches See more

18.01.2022 Campbell Markham is about to commence work as full-time Chaplain of the Braemar Aged Care homes in Perth, W.A. In his chapter, "How Christianity Transforms Human Suffering," he draws from the writings of the great nineteenth-century French pastor Adolphe Monod. In the last year of his life, as Monod lay in great pain dying of liver cancer, he managed to preach twenty-five sermons about suffering. He showed from the Bible how God can use suffering not just to bless and grow th...e sufferer, but also the sufferer's family and community. With this understanding suffering is transformed from pointlessness and hopelessness to a source of thankfulness and even joy. HOW TO ORDER 1. 12.01.2022 Dear Reader, PHILOSOPHY SUMMER SCHOOL Our first venture of this kind ran from 25 to 29 January and was taught by Dr David Moltow. I took part myself as a student (it’s such fun to sit in the back row from time to time!) and greatly enjoyed my week. Firstly, because David Moltow was a first-rate lecturer, a man whose love of philosophy was infectious and whose energy as a teacher was inspirational; secondly, because despite lockdowns we had ten in the class. Ten very good p...Continue reading
