24.01.2022 The Yirrganydji people have been caring for their land since time immemorial, however from today the Wangetti Aboriginal Land Trust land will be recognised as t...he legal owners of another 2.5 hectares of their traditional lands. Today marks a significant milestone in the journey of the Yirrganydji people and their continued connection to country. The handover of this land as Aboriginal Freehold to the Yirragnydji people provides social wellbeing and economic opportunities for present and future generations. I was honoured to attend and be a part of the Wangetti Aboriginal Land Trusts Land Handover Ceremony alongside First Nations Elders and traditional owners.

21.01.2022 Another day out on sea country. Supporting connection to country, awareness, and undertaking a reef health survey within the Great Barrier Reef (Cairns region)...#GreatBarrierReef #ReefMagicCruises #Yirrganydji #TourismQueensland

20.01.2022 Wouldnt it be great if we could help protect #GreatBarrierReef tourists and locals from excruciating Irukandji jellyfish stings by giving them advance warning ...of when the jellyfish are in the water? A NESP TWQ Hub research project aims to do just that with smart cameras installed off beaches in Far North Queensland. Data from the cameras and water temperature sensors goes back to the James Cook University lab in Townsville, to feed into a CSIRO model for predicting risk to swimmers. Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporations Yirrganydji Land and Sea Rangers are working with the researchers, using drag nets to help identify species and abundance of potentially lethal jellyfish off Cairns northern beaches.

20.01.2022 Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium was just one of the places Yirrganydji #GBRTraditionalOwners visited this week, with the Port Douglas-based group travelling... to #Townsville to tour the aquarium, Australian Institute of Marine Science and James Cook University. These meetings pave the way for Yirrganydji to develop a research strategy for their sea country and support Traditional Owner-led research priorities in the Great Barrier Reef. #LovetheReef #GBRTraditionalOwners #IndigenousPartnerships

16.01.2022 2 years ago, the Queensland Government purchased Earl Hill. Since then, we have been working with Queensland Parks And Wildlife Service and traditional owners t...o upgrade the Earl Hill Conservation Park. In March, before COVID-19 and social distancing, Leeanne Enoch MP joined me in the pouring rain to walk up the new track . If you do take the opportunity to walk the new tracks, ensure you continue to social distance and obey restrictions.

15.01.2022 Production of a 3D model of the Cairns region to complement our conservation and planning activities within the Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Areas. Thank you to the Australian Government and Trinity Engineering for their support in our project.

13.01.2022 Mangrove rehabilitation project completed at Richters/Thomatis Creek. The Yirrganydji Rangers assisted Terrain NRM with the planting and restoration of mangroves along the riverbank providing water quality outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef, reducing erosion and sediment run-off, and increasing habitat for flora and fauna. The project also provided training and employment opportunities and supporting young Traditional owners connection to country.

13.01.2022 Last week, year 11 Art students went with their Art teacher Mrs Williams to explore Redden Island at Machans Beach. This is the beginning of a much larger body... of work that they will be completing for assessment in year 12. A key part of the excursion was considering the site through a Cultural context. The class was given a really powerful overview by Gavin Singleton and the rangers from the Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporation who work in partnership with a wide range of other agencies to keep the dry forest, mangrove forests, foreshore and ocean well managed and environmentally secure as possible. The group was also lucky to have with us our CEC Moses Savage who gave us additional knowledge from a Torres Strait Islander cultural perspective. It was amazing to learn now much bush tucker and resources were right under our noses and how story and artefacts helped to communicate powerful messages about how animals and traditional owners interconnect with and between each other. Students returned with a head full of knowledge and stimulus to drive their art making. We look forward to sharing some of these outcomes with you as they develop over the next four weeks. #trinitybayshs #tbayshs #qldeducation #qldstateschools #tbay #tbaycairns #tbshs #tbshscairns#tbayvisualarts#reddenisland #machansbeach #dawulwuruaboriginalcorporation

04.01.2022 The Yirrganydji rangers undertook training in the eye on the reef and coral watch programs with Reef Magic Cruises at Moore Reef, North Queensland. The rangers collaborated with neighbouring Indigenous Traditional owner ranger teams of the Great Barrier Reef including the Mandingalbay Yidinjis Djunbunji Rangers and the Gunggandji Land and Sea Rangers. We did come across examples of coral bleaching and was a good opportunity to learn and understand about how our coral reefs work and most importantly maintaining connection to our beautiful sea country. #ReefMagicCruises #GreatBarrierReef #TourismQueensland
