The community cattle dip is in the foreground and the Mt Mee Road had not been constructed. The Telegraph of 19th January 1933 reported Work on the last section of the main road from Dayboro to Mt. Mee is now well in progress and it is thought that within a month or six weeks ...time this section will be ready for traffic The Brisbane Courier of 8th February 1933 reported The Northern Highway has been gazetted from Brisbane to Gympie, and its continuous construction carried out to a point at the north end of Mt. Mee, about 45 miles from the cityAs gazetted the highway extended from Brisbane via Petrie and Dayboro, over Mt. Mee, through Woodford and Peachester, to Beerwah and Landsboroughfrom near Dayboro to the northern end of Mt. 25.01.2022 Train at Dayboro Station 1920s (ca) The final stage of the railway from Enoggera to Dayboro, which became known as the Dayboro Line, was officially opened 100 years ago on 25th September 1920. A public meeting of the settlers at Hamilton, Upper North Pine was held on 23rd September 1882 to discuss several proposed routes for a railway. Several routes were proposed and in 1915 construction from Enoggera to Rifle Range (Gaythorne) began with that section being opened in Feb...ruary 1916. Due to war shortages work did not recommence until 1917 with Samford opening on 29th June 1918, Samsonvale on 3rd March 1919, Kobble on 3rd November 1919 and the line finally terminating at Dayboro on 25September 1920. The trains were mixed trains carrying both passengers and freight. Railmotor services were introduced in 1931. Due to the decline in passengers, and the increase in use of motor transport, the Dayboro Line was closed on 1 July 1955, having operated for a total period of 34 years 8 months. The time that had elapsed from the public meeting of the settlers in 1882 until the actual completion of the line was 37 years 11 months with the town having three name changes in that time. https://dayboro.com/train-at-dayboro-station-1920s-ca/ See more

25.01.2022 Terrors Creek c. 1901 The Brisbane Courier of 20th April 1900 reported The settlement at Berrys Flat, Upper North Pine, is going ahead rapidly. There is now quite a little township, including two blacksmiths, a saw-mill, a hotel, two stores and a well-patronised creamery. The land for miles around is very rich, both for grazing and cultivation purposes. Berrys Flat was never an official name. Upper North Pine refers to the whole district, particularly the Mt Pleasant ...area, as we were up the North Pine River. Petrie was called North Pine until 1911. Strathpine was located between the North and South Pine Rivers. All of the businesses mentioned can be seen in this photo from abt. 1901. The creamery is on the bank of Terrors Creek. The building has been extended and is now occupied by Silverwood Cafe. The sawmill is to the right. The managers residence and the three workmens cottages can be seen. Riek Bros. store is in the middle. It had three extensions over time and was our bank for many years. Charles Adsetts blacksmith at the corner of what is now Williams and Bradley Streets is mostly obscured by a tree. The original Crown Hotel and its attached store can be seen above Riek Bros. store and Skerman Bros. Blacksmith is further to the right. https://dayboro.com/terrors-creek-c-1901/ See more

Quite a number of locals were amongst those appointed including George Heathwood, John Bond, Conrad Buhmann, William Bond, Rudolphus Cruice, William Rohlf, William Sellin, Gabriel Strain,... William James Strain, Ludwig Lindenberg and John Lacey. It is believed that all these men had been members of the North Pine Mounted Infantry which was formed in 1891 and which merged with the Moreton Mounted Infantry in 1892. The men, under the leadership of Sub-Inspector W.E. Parry-Oakden, travelled to Rockhampton by steamer and from Rockhampton to Longreach by train where they were met by men with a team of horses for them to ride to Winton. 23.01.2022 Laceys Creek December 1927 Floods in the district were not uncommon but attempting to cross flooded streams in a motor vehicle was another matter. Horse power of the four-legged variety was needed on this occasion in December 1927 when the Merker family came to the rescue of their son-in-law Stewart Kelly at what is now known as Westons Crossing at Laceys Creek. At that time the speed limits throughout the Pine Shire, which had been set on 12th January 1926, were: Straigh...ts and unrestricted visibility 25mph; road mountainous country 12mph; curves and bridges and through townships 9mph. 21.01.2022 Influenza quarantine camp at Wallangarra, Queensland, 1919. John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland, negative number 67478 The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1920 spread rapidly throughout the globe and lasted some 2 years or more. 500,000 million people, about one third of the worlds population at the time, were infected and at least 50,000 million died worldwide, more people than in the Great War. 15,000 Australians died which was one of the lowest death rates from... the disease. At the end of January 1919 authorities made the drastic decision to suddenly close the New South Wales and Queensland border to stop the spread of the deadly Spanish Flu into the northern state. They just shut it at 2pm on a day at the end of January leaving people stranded both sides of the border. Quarantine camps were established where people could be vaccinated and quarantined for 7 days to ensure they were showing no signs of the flu. Closer to home the Brisbane Courier of 6th March 1919 reported Mrs. Wilcox, wife of the manager of Silverwood Dairy Co.s store at Dayboro, returned home to Dayboro last Wednesday, after an absence of nearly two months. Mrs. Wilcox was holidaying in Sydney when the influenza epidemic broke out, and consequently she was detained in Sydney, but by undergoing seven days quarantine at the border was enabled to return home last week The quarantine camps at Rainbow Bay and Wallangarra were far from being 4 and 5 star accommodation. The exact date of the borders full reopening is not known. https://dayboro.com/influenza-quarantine-camp-1919/ See more

18.01.2022 Charles McGaheys Garage c. 1934 In September 1934 Charles McGahey from Mt Mee purchased the garage in Williams Street, Dayboro where the Puma Service Station is now located. It is on the site of the original Silverwood Store which was destroyed by fire on 26th May 1924. The garage building had been built by Bob Stephens in the late 1920s to store the sawn timber from his sawmill which was located some distance behind this building. Early in 1931 he dismantled his sawmill ...and relocated it to Chermside. It is believed George Warburton opened the garage although the date is unknown. It is known that the garage was a going concern with the petrol pumps already in place when Charlie McGahey purchased it. The building was quite small and an extension was added between the original building and the adjacent house. A grocery store was set up in the extension for a short time. His daughter Beth said that it was not a good move as people remained loyal to the other stores in the town. The Courier Mail of 19th May 1937 reported Mr. C. McGahey has completed additions to his garage in Williams Street Charles McGahey sold the garage to Harold Dowling and the family moved to Scarborough in 1946. https://dayboro.com/charles-mcgaheys-garage-c-1934/ See more

The first Show was held on the War Memorial Grounds on 13th October 1956, with more than 1000 people attending the one day event. Three young sisters were the start performers of that first Show. Marion (13), Margar...et (11) and Betty (2 years 3 months) Mumford won 14 of the Shows horse-riding events. The eldest, Marion, won the Open Pony Hunt riding against adult horsemen. The first Show was such a wonderful success that the second Show was extended to a two day event (Friday and Saturday) by adding several new sections and classes to the schedule. The third year a Grand Show Ball was held in the Dayboro Public Hall on the Saturday night. By the Silver Jubilee Show in 1980, the annual event had grown to a three day Show but in recent years it has gone back to a two day Show (Saturday & Sunday). 14.01.2022 New Dayboro State School Plan approved 14th September 1916 The new Dayboro State School building was opened on its present site 100 years ago on 25th June 1920. The first school building was located in what is now Briscoe Road some distance from the town. That school building was falling into disrepair and the committee was lobbying for a new school to be built in a more central location in the town. The plan for the new building was approved on 14th September 1916 but thi...ngs moved slowly. The Brisbane Courier of 20th November 1918 reported DAYBORO, November 19: The Minister for Education visited here on Saturday for the purpose of choosing a site for the new school. He promised the committee a new building, but left them to decide on the site. There was controversy over where the new site should be and it was not until January 1919 that the school committee finally decided that Heathwood Hill would be the best place for the new school. One letter to the Brisbane Courier in March 1919 stated the cracks in the floor of the school were large enough to drop a pen-knife through. Another letter stated This building has been shockingly neglected, and for years through senile decay been falling to pieces It was not until July 1919 that approval was finally given for the erection of a new state school at Dayboro a cost of 1086, almost three years after the approval of the plan. https://dayboro.com/new-dayboro-state-school-plan-approved/ See more

The Consecration Meeting was held on 25th October 1902 in the Orange Hall when Thomas Evans, head teacher of Upper North Pine School, was installed as Worshipful Master. Land was acquired in McKenzie Street (opposite present day Dayboro UQ Veterinary Surgery) and the members built a hall for themselves about 1911. In April 1946 the Lodge purchased land on the corner of Delane...y Road and Cruice Street. In March 1952 the Lodge Architect completed plans for the new temple and C.H. (Bill) Scriven was engaged to erect the building. The original lodge building was dismantled and some of the material was used in the new building. The dedication of the new building took place on 25th October 1952, exactly 50 years from when the Lodge was consecrated. 08.01.2022 Crown Hotel & McKenzie Street, Dayboro Early-mid 1920s Photo courtesy of Gladys Mumford (deceased) The new Crown Hotel was built in 1913. A horse and sulky are tied to the hitching rail. Timber guards can be seen around the three weeping figs (there were three originally) that were planted in front of the hotel in 1923 by Emma Herbert, wife of publican Frederick Herbert. She planted the trees because farmers would tie their horses to the hitching rails and the horses ha...d no shade. The second building on the left is the original Crown Hotel, built as a store in 1887 by James Kinkead Berry. At the time James Berry eventually received a provisional liquor licence on 6th July 1892, he was also the postmaster and it was necessary to build a timber building attached to the hotel which was used as a store and post office. That store building had been removed at the time of this photograph and no the original Crown Hotel did not burn down. A gas lamp is on the corner of Williams and McKenzie Streets. The first building on the right was built by Robert Vellnagel in 1912 as a store. Wilcox Bros. Auctioneers sign is on the awning. The blacksmiths cannot be seen. The building with the high pitched roof would be the billiard saloon. The awning of Kellys store can be seen and further up the hill is A.J. McKenzie Snrs store. https://dayboro.com/crown-hotel-mckenzie-street-dayboro-ea/ See more

04.01.2022 Dayboro Postcard c. 1990 About 1990 several Dayboro Postcards were produced. Dayboro District Historical Society Inc obtained a scan of this postcard of Dayboro from the Samford Historical Museum. The photo has been taken from King Scrub looking towards Dayboro. The Showgrounds can be seen and some houses in Rodeo Drive. The school buildings are right of centre partially obscured by trees. The water tank at the top of the hill in Roderick Street is a good landmark. There are pineapple and banana plantations and former plantations forming a patchwork in the hills behind the town. 03.01.2022 Burly Bullocky Bill Baxter Brisbane Ekka 13th August 1952 In a bygone era, before the age of mechanisation, bullock teams, and to a lesser extent horse teams, were the means of hauling timber out of the scrub up or down some very steep tracks to the sawmills and the rafting grounds. At times river crossings such as Hellhole needed to be negotiated and the bullockies were noted for their somewhat colourful language whilst urging along their large teams of bullocks. The Co...urier Mail of 14th August 1952 reported Burly bullocky, Bill Baxter, of Dayboro admitted he swore several times under his breath in the Show ring yesterday. One of Queenslands few remaining bullock drivers he drove his team of 14 bullocks, worth 45 each, around the ring twice in the Cavalcade of Transport. He is 45, has been a bullocky for 20 years, and is at present working his team on the Stanley River Dam project, moving heavy material about two miles a day across rough country. They were a bit frightened of the crowd, and were asking for a few good swear words, but I controlled myself he said William Baxter was born at Mt Mee on 16th March 1907. He attended Laceys Creek State School. On 24th February 1936 he married Hilda Edith Woodward. They lived at Mt Mee and Laceys Creek before moving into Dayboro in 1949. Bill Baxter died on 21st December 1954, aged 47 and was buried in Dayboro Cemetery. They dont come any more local than that. https://dayboro.com/burly-bullocky-bill-baxter/ See more

A flood which occurred in September 1955 tore away the northern river bank changi...ng the course of the river. The road bridge was still there but was no longer of any use. The Dayboro Railway line had closed on 1st July 1955 and the rail bridge which was higher and longer was able to be used as a temporary bridge. It was the temporary bridge for over 20 years. The Pine & Peninsula Record of 15th December 1976 reported $800,000 Bridge for Dayboro: Work will start early next year on construction of a new bridge on the main Dayboro-Samford Road. The existing bridge, a converted railway crossing, will be replaced after about 20 years serviceThe two-lane concrete bridge will be constructed above flood level. 03.01.2022 ONeill & McKenzie, Grocers 3rd June 1924 The Daily Mail of 26th August 1922 reported DAYBORO The progress of this town within the past five years has been remarkable. New houses and shops are being constantly built, one of the latest additions being a new store, which has been opened by two well-known Dayboro identities The new store was known as ONeill & McKenzie, Grocers. It was on the corner of Williams and Bradley Streets. The proprietors were Richard Gordon (Di...ck) ONeill and Donald McKenzie. 01.01.2022 Terrors Creek Community Cattle Dip c. 1901 The cattle tick introduced into the Northern Territory from Indonesia towards the end of the 19th century, spread rapidly south causing tick fever, better known as Red water. In April 1901, it was decided to construct a community cattle dip adjacent to the creamery at Terrors Creek. The Brisbane Courier of 27th August 1901 reported The cattle dip at Terrors Creek is now about completed The date the dip was first used is not ...known however it is thought this photograph may have been taken that day. White shirts on dipping day, would that be normal? It does give a good view of the small town. The creamery across the creek has been extended and is now occupied by Silverwood Café. The first building on the right was part of the sawmill complex as were the three sawmill workmens cottages. The building in the middle of the photograph was Riek Bros. Store which became the E.S .& A. Bank in 1912. Charles Adsetts Blacksmith is at the top of the hill partly obscured. The Crown Hotel and Store are to the right and Skerman Bros. Blacksmith is further to the right. https://dayboro.com/terrors-creek-community-cattle-dip/ See more
