22.01.2022 Polo Tops make the News Our polo top designer Natalie White, from Mareeba Pony Club Queensland, has been recognised by her local newspaper for her national comp...etition win. PCA Board member Juliet Skinner was delighted to be able to present Natalie with two of the first shirts off the production line. We have ordered our second run of polo tops due to demand, so there will be a small delay in shipping, but being sun smart, long sleeved and made of cool mesh fabric they will be great for the warmer weather. Well done, Natalie. And what lovely horses you have! You can read the article here. https://www.facebook.com/204175819597004/posts/3964479290233286/?sfnsn=mo&extid=oM3IxxA7IYV0SzNB

22.01.2022 It's PCA Crafty Tuesday and now that coats are shedding we thought you might like to make a scratching post for your horse. All you need is a brush, broom head ...or even a doormat and something solid to attach them to. You can tie large broom heads to trees with twine for a quick, temporary set up (handy if you agist) or get to work with hammer and nail for something more permanent. Remember not to attach the scratchers to something you don't want your horse to bend, or anything where your horse might get their tail or legs caught (so avoid fences, gates or shelter/stable walls). Show us your scratching posts below! #horse #enrichment #coat #shedding #handy #buttscratcher #grooming #welfare #craftytuesday

21.01.2022 Welcome to CDS Professional Farrier Services! My name is Caitlan and I’m a trade qualified Farrier based in Caboolture QLD. Thought I’d start this page off wi...th a quick introduction of myself. As a horse crazy kid, I knew I wanted to work with horses and in 2011 I headed out to the University of Queensland to complete my Bachelor of Applied Science with an Extended Major in Equine Science. This is where my initial interest in hoof care and biomechanics sparked. From there I spent a couple of years working on a thoroughbred pre-training and breeding facility, grasping a great all round knowledge of the industry. In 2016 I was fortunate to get signed up as an apprentice Farrier. I headed back out to Gatton to complete the TAFE component of the apprenticeship at UQ, receiving my Certificate 3 in Farriery and completing the Apprenticeship in 2020. During the apprenticeship I was lucky to learn from many different Farriers, experience some of the amazing cases at the UQ Vet Hospital and compete in many Farrier Competitions (highlights including 2 x 1st Apprentice Shoeing/Forging at Caboolture Show, 1st Intermediate Shoeing/Forging 2019 Mudgreeba Show, 2019 Apprentice of the Year Winner and 5th place in the Intermediate Shoeing at the Australasian Farrier and Blacksmith Titles). Owning horses myself, I know how much we love and care for our team mates and how much of ourselves we invest into them. Hoof care is so important. I don’t believe in just shoeing or trimming the horse we have today but the horse we are hoping to still have in 5, 10, 15 years time. Farriery is a complex and very challenging job - but I love it!!

15.01.2022 Time to Nominate your Stars! Nominations are now open for the annual PCA awards. The awards recognise contributions and achievements over the past 18 months, in... the following categories: - Rider of the Year 12 years and under - Rider of the Year 13-17yrs - Rider of the Year 18-25yrs - Coach of the Year - Volunteer of the Year - Club of the Year The online entry form and criteria are on the website, and in coming weeks we will be featuring past winners and why they were successful. It is important to think about your application and give examples of your nominee’s great attributes. The judges don’t know them like you do. Eg don’t just say they are friendly - give an example of when they helped out someone at the club. Anyone with a connection to a Club can nominate; it doesn’t have to come from a Club, although Clubs may prefer to coordinate applications for the same person. Entries close on August 10, 2020. 13.01.2022 A Ballarat-based equine business claims it's created the world's first 'crash test dummy' of a horse, which it will use to create a revolutionary and safer horse float for market. #9News

12.01.2022 Before backing your youngster please read - A horse ages roughly 3 times faster than a human. So a 90 year old human is a 30 year old horse. Both very old, usu...ally arthritic, don’t have many of their original teeth left, and very likely retired and enjoying the finer things in life. A 25 year old horse is a 75 year old human. Still works so far. A 20 year old horse is a 60 year old human. At that point where the body doesn’t work like it use to but the brain is all there and wants to be active. A 13 year old horse is a 39 year old human. Middle aged, prime of their life where their knowledge and physical ability are about equal. So let’s get down to the babies and work our way up. A 3 year old horse is a 9 year old child. A child. Not ready for work by a long stretch. We have moved past sending children down the mines. A 4 year old horse is a 12 year old child. Often will do odd jobs for pocket money, maybe a paper round, mowing lawns etc. Basically a 4 yo horse can start a bit of light work to earn their keep. A 5 year old horse is a 15 year old teenager. Think they know it all, cocky, and ready to up their work and responsibilities. Still quite weak and not fully developed so shouldn’t be at their physical limit but can start building strength. A 6 year old horse is an 18 year old human. An adult. Ready to work hard. Pushing your youngster too hard too young will result in failure of many body parts. Joints, tendons, ligaments as well as their brains. Waiting one year at the beginning can give a horse another 10 years of useful working life. Be patient with your pride and joy! 11.01.2022 Just a little warning regarding the Xmas treat many stores are now starting to stock for dogs at xmas. Many of these so called treats end up with the dog "enjoy...ing" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China. The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde. If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog. Leave them in the shop where they belong or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away for later, then dispatch in the bin! Please be safe with your dogs!
