13.01.2022 Ten years ago, September 2007 to be precise, I made the decision that I needed a new hobby. Back then I was a busy homeschooling mum of 8, living in rural South Australia. I ran my own business, selling books online, but I was about to turn 40 and simply wanted my very own hobby. I marched into our schoolroom and found some oil paints, brushes, and a canvas panel. Ok I thought...art it is! And grabbing the whiteboard stand to use as an easel, I trotted outside to paint ...something. Having never used oil paints before, I had NO idea what I was doing but I didnt really care; we lived in a very remote location, the closest neigbour lived half a km away so if I mess up... so what? I decided to paint a picture of our house; set things up, and began my masterpiece. As Murphy's Law would have it, right then my neighbour drove past, and seeing me outside, he thought he would stop and say hi. "Oh!" he said, "Do you paint? My mum does oil painting!" And to my horror, he hopped out of his car to take a look! I explained I was 'just starting', and he mumbled something like.... "oh yea cool.... well I gotta keep moving!" and left me to it. It took me two afternoons but I finished it as best I could, and two weeks later, I entered it into the local agricultural show. Being the one and only oil painting, I walked away with first prize! And despite the lack of competition, I was hooked - I had found my hobby! I only painted landscapes for a long time, not once thinking I could ever be good enough 'to paint faces or anything'....and yet here we are... ten years later, and I am doing exactly that!!! Practice and willingness to learn... I wonder what the next ten years will bring? :)

07.01.2022 Some days things go really well.... other times it is very.... very.... slow.... They are finally starting to look like hands... we will get there!!!
