03.01.2022 Great to see basketball back on our screens again!! An exciting WNBL season opener tonight

02.01.2022 It has been a while since we posted our last update, so heres the last one for the year, and as President of Deaf Basketball Australia. While I have resigned from my position as President, Simon Andersson (Treasurer) and Mirella Connell (Secretary) have also followed suit. This means, DBA needs to close up shop and will be managed by Deaf Sports Australia in the meantime. However, this doesnt mean the end of our deaf basketball programs as DSA will do a great job to ensur...e that our athletes and volunteers have the opportunity to be part of a sport they are passionate about. During my time as President since mid-2017, I am proud of the U21 Program which saw the Dingoes attend their first U21 World Deaf Basketball Championships event that was held in the USA in July 2018. This would not have happened without the hard work and support from Simon Andersson, Ryan Holloway (Head Coach) and Jackie Robins (Team Manager) who worked tirelessly to ensure we sent the team to the event. Sam Cartledge who came onboard as Assistant Coach closer to the event provided a much needed boost. Even though the U21 Ringtails Team were not able to get off the ground, we recently appointed Lance Wright as Head Coach to take the lead towards the U21 2022 World Deaf Basketball Championships, in which the Dingoes will also aim to join as well. While the Goannas were not able to compete at the Asia Pacific Games for the Deaf due to the event being cancelled, they worked very hard to prepare for this event. The cancellation of the event was heart-breaking and disappointing for the team. I commend the team for their determination in putting a lot of time and effort and their passion in representing Australia is a great example of pride and inclusion. This is also despite the fact that our teams received no sponsorship or funding. I am grateful to Simon Andersson and Matt Dunstan for their amazing support and contribution. Also big thanks to Aaron and Caroline Tait for their superb efforts with fundraising and social media for the Goannas Team. Even though Mirella Connell only joined us a couple of months ago, she would have made a great Secretary. Even though I leave DBA with a heavy heart, I am confident that DSA will recruit new volunteers to join as I strongly believe that every deaf and hard of hearing athlete deserves an opportunity to aim high such as representing Australia for the Deaflympic Games, World Deaf Basketball Championships and Asia Pacific Basketball events. I wish you all an enjoyable Festive Season and a prosperous, safe 2020! All the best! Irena Farinacci Outgoing President Deaf Basketball Australia
