25.01.2022 Great museum and a great name. The spectacular new WA Museum has added an Aboriginal name - WA Museum Boola Bardip which means many stories in Noongar language. The name recognises that the museum sits on Whadjuk Noongar land, and honours the cultural heritage of Australias First Peoples. It also acknowledges the shared cultural heritage of the nearly 2.9 million people who call Western Australia home. Today weve also opened a ballot for the first 50,000 free, timed tickets for the first 9 days after the museum opens on 21 November. 21.01.2022 Thrill seekers can now register to be one of the first to ride the new WA-made Matagarup Bridge zip line, when it opens this summer. The zip-line ride will ope...rate at an introductory cost of $59 per person and will include photos of the experience emailed directly to participants. The bridge climb will also be priced similarly and a virtual reality experience is under development that will be open to all ages. Thrill-seekers will zip at up to 100 km/h from the launch platform along 400-metre-long dual cables, extending from the western wishbone of the bridge structure, across the Swan River, to the landing platform located in scenic Burswood Park. The bridge climb is a 314-step trek up the bridges main arch, ascending about 70 metres to the sky view platform. Package experiences combining both the climb and zip-line will also be available. This new experience is only possible, thanks to the efforts of WAs manufacturing industry in completing the bridge work locally. Marketed as Matagarup Zip+Climb, the adventure activities will be operated by the West Australian company Perth Bridge Climb and Zip Pty Ltd. Local company Byte Construct installed the zip-line cables this week with the sky-view and zip line platforms under construction within the bridge arches. A second stage of activities is also under consideration, including an all-ages climbing frame located near the zip-line landing platform within Burswood Park to attract people to this scenic precinct. 21.01.2022 COMP TIME! Karen Frankel grew up in Zimbabwe surrounded by the art of her late father who was a professional artist and drawing became a life long hobby. After migrating to Australia in 1984 she began to paint as well but it took recovery from a mental health breakdown in 2000 for me to pursue her art more seriously and to start painting for exhibition. She also started teaching small workshops as a volunteer and was soon asked to conduct full day Drawing for Non-Drawer... workshops for UWA Extension which have continued since then. Many requests lead her to teaching privately which slowly grew into an art school providing 17 different art classes a week for children and adults. After 15 years of running the school she sold the business in 2018 but continued to teach drawing classes there. She now has a book released (Get Drawing! (even if you think you cant)) to dispel the myth that people need to be born with talent to be able to draw. She is passionate about sharing drawing and observations skills so that everyone can take pleasure in the drawing process. The book contains simple explanations and exercises, common pitfalls to watch out for and links to online video demonstrations. What’s better than a good magic show? The Greatest Magic Show! We started off our Fringe reviews with the magical stylings of this captivating trio. It’s been a long eight month hiatus for The Greatest Magic Show thanks to Covid 19 shutting down festivals all around the world, and that explains the sluggish start for their ver...y first show back. But the difference between a good performer and a great performer is how they react to little hiccups and these guys rolled with the punches, found their groove, relaxed in to it and the show took off on an upward trajectory within a few minutes. The magical pantomime stylings of Sam, Justin, and The Ringleader were a hit with the young audience to the point that many couldn’t resist jumping to their feet to point and shout out in traditional behind you style, so eager were they to help. The clever and creative use of props was a delight to see, ensuring there was a smile on every face, both adult and child. The circus tricks had the crowd cheering, but the absolute highlight was the extensive and absolutely hilarious audience participation that made me wish I was eight and could have been picked! Each child received a wand with instructions on how to do a neat magic trick; a really special and unique way for the audience to truly take the magic home with them. True to form, my kids broke them before we’d left the tent. Which is a bummer because I really wanted to learn the trick for myself! The Greatest Magic Show is a must for all young families who are looking for a fun and thoroughly entertaining Fringe outing that will keep the little ones engaged and the parents laughing along for the whole sixty minutes. 04.01.2022 NIGHT PARROT FOUND BY MARTU RANGERS After two years of searching, Indigenous rangers have located the elusive night parrot on Martu Country in WA's Pilbara re...gion. STORY: https://ab.co/3j1cKmQ. Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa's Martu rangers have been using sound recorders to search for the mysterious birds which are one of the rarest in the world. Experts from the The University of Queensland and Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia have been assisting the search and, to the rangers' delight, the hard work has paid off. "I feel really good to have found that night parrot, we were lucky to put that sound recorder in the right spot," Martu ranger Gavin Nanudi said. "We found them in the lake area where the feed and water and big spinifex is." It is the fifth confirmed location of the night parrot in Western Australia and the find highlights the critical work by Indigenous rangers to look after their country. Martu rangers manage more than 14 million hectares of country in the Great Sandy and Little Sandy deserts including Karlamilyi National Park. Mr Nanudie said the rangers are now focused on finding other populations of night parrots and locating the roosting site of the recent find. "Well keep looking for them around the lakes. If we find that nest, well do a little bit of burning, not too much, to protect them," Mr Nanudie said. 02.01.2022 #BREAKING: The WA government is claiming a "comprehensive victory" in a key legal battle with mining billionaire Clive Palmer, after the Federal Court ruled the... states border closure was more effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19 than any other measure. STORY: https://ab.co/31qjWD9. The court ruled that the re-introduction of the virus into WA could have "catastrophic" consequences. "The border restrictions have been effective to a very substantial extent to reduce the probability of COVID-19 being imported into Western Australia from interstate," Justice Darryl Rangiah said. He said that if an infected person entered the state, there would be "a high probability that the virus would be transmitted into the Western Australian population; and at least a moderate probability that there would be uncontrolled outbreaks." "If there were uncontrolled outbreaks in Western Australia, the consequences would include the risk of death and hospitalisation, particularly for vulnerable groups, such as elderly and Indigenous people. "In the worst-case scenario, the health consequences could be catastrophic." However, WA has lost its bid for a fresh trial in the case, to strike out evidence presented by the Commonwealth during an earlier hearing. Justice Rangiah determined there should not be a new hearing because the Commonwealth was "entitled to withdraw from the proceedings without permission". "Second, the prejudice to Western Australia has not been caused by the withdrawal, but by the Commonwealth having intervened in support of the Palmer parties case in the first place." "Third, as the Palmer parties indicated that at any new hearing they would adopt the Commonwealths submissions and call the witnesses already called by the Commonwealth, there would be no point in having a new hearing." The constitutional challenge to the border closure, mounted by Clive Palmer, is now set to be decided in the High Court later this year. Speaking in Port Hedland after the judgement, Premier Mark McGowan said it was a "vindication" of the stand WA had taken on its hard border. "This is a comprehensive victory for Western Australia and for the people of this state," he said.

The freeway was parti...ally closed for over an hour after a triple-zero call came through at 6:30am to report ducks wandering across four lanes of traffic in Como. Main Roads Western Australia crews helped to recover ducklings stuck in a storm drain while the parents watched on. An hour later, the family of ducks were safely released into back into the Swan River. Crisis averted!
