24.01.2022 Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) Australia Inc. Awareness Week 2020 26th to 30th October Good morning everyone,... When my husband and I founded DCD Australia Inc. we wanted to support families just like us with a child living with the disorder. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be the Director of the only DCD organisation in Australia but the world, leading the change to make a difference. Along this journey to make a difference I am supported by some amazing professionals. A couple of years ago my husband and I met with Dr Melissa Licari from Telethon Research Institute and Associate Prof. Jackie Williams from Victoria University, the 4 of us brainstormed to see what was needed to make a difference for DCD. It was one thing having an organisation to support families, it was another to make an impact and to get the evidence needed to carve a path for change. This day is where the impACT for DCD was created. This study, the first of its kind in the world for Developmental Coordination Disorder will help us gain momentum and when we do advocate and lobby for financial support and awareness, we have the proven data for support. This study wasn’t funded and it was created and implemented, compiled and finalized by a group of extraordinary people who want to initiate the change for all the families around Australia who are impacted daily by this disorder. I have attached the impACT for DCD report for you all to read and share. I’m not going to sugar coat it; it is a tough report to read as a parent. You are reading about the struggles and difficulties that children living with DCD go through every day. What I want you to know, parents, carers and adults living with DCD is you are not alone we are here and we hear you. We are working, all volunteers at the organisation to help make an impact to bring about the change so desperately needed. https://dcdaustralia.org.au/impact-for-dcd-full-report/ Kind Regards, Sam Elbers Director DCD Australia Inc. #spreadawarenesstoday

24.01.2022 Last night we held a first event in Brisbane, it was wonderful to meet parents & offer support. Thank you to Nancy for your feedback. Big thanks for the Brisbane meeting last night! It is wonderful to hear about all the work being done and plans for the future with DCD services and support. Thanks to the whole team at DCD Australia for their hard work so far and their dedication to improving things for our kids. It's a huge relief to know that I am not alone in my frustration with getting a diagnosis and accessing suitable therapy and educational support.

03.01.2022 Hi everyone, I’m looking for some parents input for our new website. I would love for you to put into writing for me if you would like ‘The struggles’ of your child living with DCD ‘ Something amazing or what makes them amazingly unique’ ... In you can pop their age & gender if you would like at the bottom of your comment please...or a name & age if you’re comfortable for that to be published. I’ll start... Struggles-As he is getting older the struggles are more mental health than the DCD itself, the focus is on self esteem & confidence, comparing himself to others is a constant struggle. Being amazingly Unique-My son doesn’t see it as a disability or disorder rather than a gift that he has been given to help others. He is caring, kind & compassionate. Kai 13 years old

03.01.2022 Day 5 Awareness week New book gives voice to Kids with DCD A word from the author Dr Melissa Licari ... Having worked with so many beautiful children with DCD over the years, my eyes have been opened to the many challenges children and their families experience. Certainly one of the greatest challenges is awareness at school. Teachers are not familiar with disorder and most do not know how to provide support. Other children do not see the 'disability' or the hurt that their actions and words can have when they laugh or exclude. If only they knew the impact they could have on a child's life if they reached out and helped. To help shine a light on DCD and raise awareness of motor difficulties in a way that other children could relate to, we decided to create a children's book. Children with DCD were interviewed and their words used to create the story. Since the book has been released, we have been distributing it to schools and we would love you to buy a copy and do the same. Proceeds from the sale of each book go back to DCD Australia Inc. So not only will you be helping to spread the word, you will be helping this incredible advocacy group to support families around Australia. Follow this link to read about the book https://www.telethonkids.org.au//New-book-gives-voice-to-/ Follow the below link to purchase the book https://uwap.uwa.edu.au//sometimes-i-find-it-hard-to-move-
