20.01.2022 Sally Odgers is a master author and editor, so it was with similar nail-biting suspense as you will find in my latest middle-grade adventure, I sent her a copy ...of Fossil Frenzy the Adamson Adventures 3 for review. I was roaring with pride when Sally returned her review over the weekend. Thank you so much Sally Odgers Fossil Frenzy the Adamson Adventures By Sandra Bennett Rosella Ridge Books Reviewed via Book Review Offer and Swap Fossil Frenzy is a fast moving adventure set in Queensland. The Adamson kids, Zac, Clare and Luke, are staying with Uncle Tom on his outback property. Uncle Tom is in trouble because of the drought, and the kids set out to look for dinosaur fossils as a way to finance the farm until it rains. So far, so normal, but the story soon takes off in an unexpected direction. In the mode of old-fashioned adventures, Uncle Tom lets the kids go camping overnight. They take the border collie, Grommet, along. An unexpected storm sends them scurrying for cover in a cave and when they re-emerge, everything has changed. Zac, the eldest, tells the story. He’s a typical elder brother, trying to keep his siblings safe and in order. His fascination with science comes in useful. Clare is an animal lover and environmentalist, while Luke is a cheeky youngster whose impulsive and sometimes disobedient manner keeps Zac on his toes. The family dynamics is beautifully depicted, with the threesome squabbling and debating, but still using their talents in impressive teamwork. The action is fast-moving and funny and frightening by turns, with enough fanciful twists to keep it from sounding teachy. Plot points are planted and harvested with panache, and the story ends on a strong and enticing note with a lure of more adventure to come as a certain egg hatches in Uncle Tom’s poultry yard. At the back of the book there’s a handy glossary of terms, and the author explains some of her resources and motivations in writing the story. I’d highly recommend this one to kids who love dinosaurs, megafauna and adventure with an Australian setting, and to adults who love good adventure stories with kids who enjoy life and go for it boots and all. Now what about those boots? I’m sure there’s more to those than Uncle Tom is telling has Tom himself ever but I’ll say no more. Read the book and see what you think! I note this is the third in the Adamson series. Now to get my claws on the other two! #fossilfrenzy #theadamsonadventures3 #chapterbooksforkids #dinosaur #adventure #resilience #survival #climatechange See more
15.01.2022 My favourite childhood book was The Adventures of Snugglepot & Cuddlepie. Around 4 years ago, I found a pristine paperback copy that was released as a special edition in 1987 at our church op-shop. It even has its own specially printed envelope and stamp and bookMark. 3 years ago a travelling exhibition of May Gibb’s work from the State Library came to our little local library in Cootamundra. I loved it. It was interesting to read that May created her artwork first, then wrote the stories, not the other way around.
12.01.2022 This is my review, and I am also posting a review from a fellow author on my author page Debra Clewer-Author. ... Book review- Jock McLock and His Piratical Adventure Format: eBook Author: Elizabeth Klein Genre: Middle-Grade adventure https://www.amazon.com/-/eBo7ZBVVX4 Wow! What an edge-of-the-seat tale! Here we have the account of an adventurous young man, whose besty Noel happens to find half of what appears to be an old pirate map, in the base of a box of donated books. He and Noel seem excited about the find. But where is the rest of the map? Whereabouts exactly is the apparently hidden treasure? Is it a real map, or something funny someone has drawn up, maybe for a book? Jock’s dramatic daydream, (involving a nasty Bolivian gangster, ropes and cobras in a pit) sets the tone in the opening chapter, for this MG adventure novel. Constantly wondering about what his movie hero, Marco Rex Spy Extraordinaire, would do in various situations makes for humorous reading. Jock is uneasy as he and his friend stay with the second-hand bookstall at a local fair. Who is the mysterious man in the white suit? What is the connection with the map and the old Mrs Trelawney who donated the books? Are Jock and Noel under surveillance by villains? Stay tuned and find out! This novel takes me back to the kind of adventure stories I enjoyed as an upper-primary grade student. Villains, old-fashioned cutthroat adventure, intrigue, life-and-death situations. I particularly love the description of the old Mrs Trelawney, and the house she lives in. Reminds me of a couple of spooky sitcom families from the ’60s. Jock has an over-active imagination, which drives him on. With indomitable courage and spirit, and the desire to help his mum at the same time, this is a great read even for an adult like myself. And the 10 interesting pirate facts at the end are fascinating. 5 out of 5 stars, and I look forward to the next instalment in the Jock McLock series. See more
05.01.2022 Sharing from a group review. Reviewer: Carolyn Wyrsch. Jock McLock and His Piratical Adventure Genre: Adventure Format: eBook Author: Elizabeth Klein https://www.amazon.com/-/eBo7ZBVVX4... Jock McLock and His Piratical Adventure is the story of Jock McLock and his quest to find a hidden treasure. It began when he and his mate Noel Harris, found half of an old map, whilst working at the Spring Fair. It had been lurking at the bottom of some second-hand books donated by the witchy Mrs Trelawney. Was it an old map? A genuine pirate map, with a treasure buried somewhere! Tasked with finding the missing part of the map, Jock was thrown into a rip-roaring adventure sure to appeal to adventurous readers. Jock McLock and His Piratical Adventure completely dragged me in, and I found myself giggling and laughing out loud. I really liked this story because Jock was a wonderful character and his connection to the spy Marco Lex was endearing and clever. He has lots of guts and determination, and his adventures were plausible and entertaining. Well written, and the best news, there is a second book. Reviewer: Carolyn Wyrsch See more
