19.01.2022 2018 DCRC POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS - APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN The Dementia Centre for Research Collaboration (DCRC) and the NHMRC National Institute for Dementia Research (NNIDR) would like to announce the 2018 DCRC Postgraduate Research Scholarships for Dementia Research. Three PhD scholarships are on offer at $30,000 per annum for up to 3 years starting in 2019. Three more scholarships will be on offer in 2020 and three in 2021.... Funded by the Australian government, the DCRCs primary research foci within the broader topic of dementia research are prevention, assessment and diagnosis, intervention and treatment, living with dementia and care. Harnessing habits to increase physical activity in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Subjective Cognitive Decline. Dr Belinda Brown, Murdoch University. Sustaining exercise to enhance cognition: A feasibility study. ...Dr Louise Mewton, CHeBA, UNSW Sydney. Clarifying the relationship between alcohol use and dementia. Dr Claudia Meyer, Bolton Clarke Research Institute. Respite care and transition to permanent residential care for people living with dementia and informal carers: Mind the Gap! Dr Jade Cartwright, Curtin University. Evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of a novel discourse intervention to improve everyday communication in people with dementia. Dr Cartwright was also awarded the Dementia Advocates Award because it was felt that her research would benefit many people living with dementia who experience language difficulties. These pilot projects funded by the DCRC and supplemented by DARF will each receive total funding of $75,000 over 1-2 years. There will also be an option to participate in an interview or focus group that will also be conducted online via Zoom. From a total funding pool of $1.8 million, 3-5 project grants will be funded from the following areas: ... 1. Reduce or delay risk of cognitive decline or dementia. 2. Develop evidence and promote the uptake measures that will help people live better with dementia, including but not limited to practice change initiatives, addressing stigma, promotion of autonomy and reablement. 3. Improve quality of care and quality of life for people living with dementia and carers in community, residential care or acute care. 02.01.2022 Dr Louise Mewton has been awarded one of DCRCs World Class Research Grants for three grants of up to $600,000 each. Her project titled, "Healthier drinking choices and cognitive decline in older risky drinkers" will address a gap in the literature on alcohol use as a target for dementia prevention. It aims to determine whether an online intervention adapted for older adults can slow cognitive decline and reduce risky alcohol consumption in older risky drinkers.
