23.01.2022 Your social media pages are about to be filled up with the same old fitness post and it will read something like this. "2020 has been a shit year start 2021 off... the right way" Whilst New Year's Day is a line in the sand for some how come we don't say we will start today. Since it is Melbourne Cup day here is DC Strength and Performance's hot tip. "Your fitness does not have a calendar. The more you say I will start tomorrow you may have just said I am never going to start."



18.01.2022 Do you experience pain? Pain simply the way the body tells you something is not quite right. Whilst all pain symptoms are not all the same, it should not be ignored. In all honesty you are the best person to judge if it will need further investigation, with your GP or Physio. This is where pain management falls away. The symptom of pain once it has dissipated the likelihood of treatment also does the same. Pain is not an illness like a cold, it is related to a body dysfunct...ion that needs to be address. Lets look at shoulder injuries for example. In a study by Owens, Dickens, Kilcoyne & Rue, 2012, they found that in athletes who competed in contact sports between 15 and 20 years had a 87% chance of re-injury. As athletes age also this also increases the chances of injury. So with this said, the good news is that whilst injury rehabilitation works, it is also painful and can be a long process and sometimes you may feel that what you do is not doing anything at all (trust me on this one). A practice that should be implemented is a injury prevention program. The benefit of a injury prevention program is that you are generally doing this program with out pain, so therefore the movement patterning will be performed with less restriction of movement. Regardless if you are an athlete or not a "injury prevention" should be one that is incorporated into your exercise routine.

11.01.2022 Free Weights Vs Machine Weights In my opinion there is a place for both in the gym however your resistance program should be predominantly free weights. Free weights add in the element of stability into your work out and machine weights, such as the Smith machine should not be used for exercises that require this element of stability. ... Let's take the most common mistake in every commercial gym, Smith machine squats. Everyone's biomechanics is different, so therefore doing a squat on a machine will force you into a position your body should not be in. If you are unable to do a barbell back squat then you need to find an alternate exercise which will work the same muscles until such time as you can do it correctly. 10.01.2022 Massage? Is it worth it. Simply yes if it make you feel better then absolutely. Make no mistake though massage does not in anyway replace exercise to make you feel better, but what type of massage should you be getting.... Normally people seek out a massage due to pain, stiffness or relaxation. For that reason I recommend that remedial massage is the minimum type of massage you should seek out and here is why: Remedial massage is defined as the systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to assist in rehabilitation, pain and injury management. Based of this definition and the reason why people normally seek out a massage, remedial is the only massage to seek out. So what do you look for: 1 A remedial therapist must have knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to determine where to treat patients. 2 Services must be based on best practice principles and before any remedial massage treatment begins, a thorough patient consultation and assessment is to be performed to ascertain the patient’s current health status. 3 A remedial massage therapist needs to rely on the patient’s feedback to identify the areas that require attention, the therapist can then apply the relevant and appropriate treatment. So what does a remedial massage therapist treat: Remedial massage is designed to balance muscle/soft tissue length, tension, tone which will in turn promote the return to normal joint/capsular/bone position; increase the flow of blood and lymph, particularly in the injured areas, thus removing blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions resulting from injury. 05.01.2022 Failing to Plan is planing to fail; In the gym a program is your plan and trying to get results without it is setting you up to get poor results. Your gym program should be set up so that you can't fail as long as you stick too it. Add a coach to this who holds you accountable to this plan and you will more than likely succeed.
