24.01.2022 Come along and hear this awesome band!!
24.01.2022 Todays practice brought to you by Fullerton, California.
24.01.2022 Singing scares me so I'm doing it more! Trying to learn new skills this year, and since I encourage my students to sing along at home I guess I should listen to my own advice.... it helps your guitar playing too. There is an art to creating interesting accompaninent other than strumming 4 beats to the bar. . . . .... . . #northernbeachesguitarlessons #northernbeachesguitar #manlyguitar #northernbeaches #localguitarteacher #guitar #guitarteacher #chords #guitarlessons #harmony #neverstoplearning #gretschguitars #gretsch #guitardaily #guitarsofinstagram #guitarsarebetter #guitarlife #dailyguitar #jazzstandards #jazzguitar
23.01.2022 GREEN IGUANA UPDATE! Recording has begun, and just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported me by donating to my GoFundMe campaign. Thank you!!! I also found out we can have the album made with green vinyl! Who wouldn't choose that option? If you can possibly help by making a donation (any donation $30 and over is considered a pre-purchase, and you will get a limited edition GREEN IGUANA album on green vinyl!), I will be a very appreciative reptile. Otherwise, pl...ease help me spread the musical love by tagging and sharing with your people. Thanks everyone. GREEN IGUANA X Link to GoFundMe
21.01.2022 I'm very happy to say I have joined the Northside Big Band! What a fantastic bunch of musicians playing classic swing era music. Lots of gigs coming up, first one this Friday. And its in Manly folks!! Come on down!
20.01.2022 You know how some books keep showing you new things years after you first read them? "Forward Motion - from Bach to Bebop" is one of those. Practical and philosophical, highly recommended. @ Allambie Heights
19.01.2022 It's cold! Trying to warm up.
19.01.2022 Guitar Friends! Don't freak out when the notes go way below or stratospherically high above the staff..... use this trick and you will never again be afflicted with the "what the heck note is that" blues.
18.01.2022 A sneak peak from today's session. Not mixed and no steel guitar yet, but so happy with the rolling shells and rain stick parts! Gotta find me a tiki bar. On a cruise ship.
17.01.2022 Mucking around on the baroque guitar... nylgut strings and gut frets that move around for different tuning temperaments.
17.01.2022 Wish you had an extra finger sometimes? George Van Epps has your solution my friends.
16.01.2022 The art of accompanying - connecting chords with basslines. This is a really satisfying way to play and provides good support for a singer or instrumentalist. Small chord fragments are preferable here over big 5 and 6 note voicings. Use chord tones and chromatic approach notes to get to each new chord on beat 1. Let me know if you would like more of a breakdown on how to improvise these basslines.
15.01.2022 New Job Announcement! Starting Term 3 I will be teaching guitar and ukulele students at Pittwater House School. Looking forward to doing my best School of Rock/Jack Black impression!
15.01.2022 Guitar and cello duo looking for work!
14.01.2022 We are now set up and ready to open the doors at Wolumla School of Music!
13.01.2022 Just hanging with my crew.
13.01.2022 Why does this feel so awkward?! Please help only if you can comfortably do so. Thank you.
13.01.2022 Advice from the Pros! Project your sound!
12.01.2022 For an album called "Exotic Guitar" there's not a whole lot of guitar down yet! It's been another great day in Factory Studios. Free random gift from my cupboard if you can name the song I'm rearranging/dismembering here.
12.01.2022 Back to the factory! Factory Studios that is. Recording more of the GREEN IGUANA album with Benny Johnson. Sneak peek coming soon.
10.01.2022 Advice From The Pros episode 2. Stacatto Legato! The legendary @chrisbrooksguitarist explained this concept to me a while ago. Thanks Chris!!
09.01.2022 Just finished a fun gig with the multi-talented Georgi Hargreaves at Wheelers Seafood Restaurant. Guitar and flute/sax duets are great fun to play. Thanks Georgi!
08.01.2022 Recording percussion today for my brand new Green Iguana project. Can't wait to share it with the world! Still a little bit secret yet but think 1950's casino lounge meets Hawaiian resort bar.
07.01.2022 My guitar had some sexy time with a sousaphone tonight. Wonder what the offspring will look like?
07.01.2022 Central Coast Leagues today!
06.01.2022 Edit: no guitars will be purchased with donations! All donations are pre-purchase of my GREEN IGUANA album "Exotic Guitar". Thank you. Please help if you can. I'm making a new tropical/surf/exotica album, (Green Iguana and his Exotic Guitars) and need help with funds for production! It feels weird asking this way, but I am working (with a great mentor) at getting better with putting creative things out in the world and asking for assistance in return.... if this seems weird ...please disregard but if you can donate something I will be for ever grateful, and you will get a vinyl copy of the album (later this year) and free hugs for life...dx https://www.gofundme.com/dean-gray-guitarist Thanks for reading.
05.01.2022 These are all the 4 digit sequences based on the numbers 1 2 3 4.... There are a lot of things you can do with these patterns. For steel guitar, try 4 note picking patterns (using 3 picks means figuring out which digit is responsible for the extra note in each group). I use what I call (stole/misappropriated from cello terminology actually) forward and backward extensions. A forward extension in my case is where the middle finger plays 2 notes e.g. thumb, index, middle, mid...dle. Backward extension is thumb, thumb, index, middle. All on separate strings. Do both types for thoroughness! See more
05.01.2022 Improvising is my daily ritual, meditation and joy. Not eveything we improvise is really new, more a mashup of things we've played before. But you have to open the conduits of creativity, and not judge yourself too harshly, so when inspiration comes, your hands, ears and mind are ready to give themselves over. I'm glad I didnt stop after my clam halfway through, cause the chromatic lick that appeared soon after is a new thing. Remember dear guitar students, no one is perfect, despite what the Instagram shredders want us to think! Keep playing despite your "mistakes" and remember: there are no wrong notes, just interesting choices.
05.01.2022 Manifesting my dream. Back into the studio today to work on mt GREEN IGUANA album.
04.01.2022 Polka Dots and Moonbeams part 2. Accompany yourself by playing the chords and the melody together.
04.01.2022 Getting ready to play the thing in pic 1, with the peeps in pic 2! Great Gatsby Orchestra here I come! (Will be bringing a tenor banjo too - yikes!) @ Allambie Heights
03.01.2022 Sunday night practice. An exercise from the excellent book "Speed Strategies for Guitar" by the equally excellent @chrisbrooksguitarist. Do check it out if you are interested in improving your technique and ability to stay relaxed while increasing your picking speed. Link to Chris' lesson material to follow. Any technical issues here are purely my own, and the 3 glasses of red I consumed with dinner. But as an esteemed jazz teacher of mine once told me, if you sre going to perform while high, then you better practice that way too!
03.01.2022 Visiting my friend Cuddles.
02.01.2022 Epiphone Joe Pass cleaned up and restrung. 1990's model, original pickups and wiring. Anyone tried P90s or Charlie Christian type pickups in one of these? It plays really well and is lots of fun but sounds a little flat to my ears.
02.01.2022 Advice from the pros.... I love playing with musicians who are more experienced than I am. Partly cause they kick my butt and force me to challenge my perceived limitations, and also for the lessons they can teach, both consciously and subconsciously. Sometimes a lesson might consist of an in depth discussion around a particular concept or obstacle. Sometimes it is just a few words, simple to hear, but takes months or years to understand and implement. The more I learn about ...music, creativity and EGO, the more i see patterns in my learning and performing that have hindered musical freedom. The sound of the instrument and beautiful melodies is what got me hooked so long ago. The ego took over later on with the idea of "not good/fast/complex enough". Its ok to take your time, over your whole lifetime. Play a little everyday and see what happens. See more
01.01.2022 Sunday morning practice on this beautiful Eastman archtop. It was my most played guitar until I began studying theorbo at the Sydney Con. Then, a detour onto Fender Stratocasters, bluegrass banjo and Hawaiian steel.... now, picking this beauty up is like coming home. It is incredibly light and resonant. Low action with heavy flatwound strings. Mmmmm...... @ Allambie Heights
