25.01.2022 Linking up to Perth studio @mds.audio today for a @curtainworld_wa campaign via @sourceelements from my bedroom. . I love using Source Connect, upgrading to the Standard version has been such a win for me. Total game changer. . Im recording my sessions even when Im linking to a studio and theyre recording the audio at their end, because when has a backup ever been a bad idea? ... . I made the change after listening to a podcast where a game vo director said shed experienced problems with remote sessions that would have been easily rectified if the talent had also been recording at their end. So its now part of my process! . Recording from home is awesome, but it does come with the added responsibility of being an engineer to an extent, as well as a voice. . So if youre declaring your availability as a talent who can link up with studios from home, make sure you are SUPER familiar and proficient with your gear. . Understand what all the buttons, knobs, meters, settings and so on actually do. You may never need to use that knowledge, but on the one day shit goes sideways, youll be really grateful you took the time to be equipped to deal with it. . 19.01.2022 IMPROVISATION SKILLS . This is an excellent example of improv and confidence and timing. . To be a highly effective VO, flexibility in thinking and actions must be present. Hearing direction and changing your delivery to fit takes a willingness to let go of the previous take, and an agile imagination.... . And improv is all about mental and emotional agility, flexibility and letting go! Yielding to whatever is offered. Not like a doormat, certainly not losing touch with yourself, but absolutely allowing your thoughts and the expression of those thoughts to be in flux and in flow. . Its been a pivotal skill for me in my career, and also in my life. Its had an enormous impact on me as a performer, a teacher, a coach, a parent, an athlete, a partner...and I believe its integral to my happiness and satisfaction with my life. . Which goes WAY beyond doing a good job as a voice over artist! But to bring it back to VO, consider this: . Last night my husband gave me some bad news about something horrific that happened to a friend of his. He warned me that it was horrible before he told me, but I still wasn’t quite prepared to hear it. My reaction was visceral; I doubled over the sink where I had been washing the dishes, my body convulsing, not sure if I wanted to sob or vomit. Eventually I started to cry and slid to the floor. It felt surreal, like the sort of thing that happens in a movie. And while I was sitting on the floor trying to calm myself, I remembered the times I’ve had to go through these kinds of body-wracking emotions as an actor. And I wanted to RUN from it. I wanted to get as far away from the experience as possible - both the experience of that moment, and the experience of reliving horrible emotions as an actor. Then I remembered how much I’ve learned to trust my own strength. That it is safe for emotions to pass through me. I sat on the floor, put my hand on my heart, and breathed deeply. 15.01.2022 Ooooh, inflections. . Did you know that about 40% of your communication is in the tone you use when speaking? . That whole "93% of your comms being non-verbal" stat is actually a little misleading, because in this case, non-verbal doesn't mean not-spoken. It means not-words.... . Inflections play a huge role in establishing tone. For example, add an upward inflection to the end of a phrase, and it becomes a question, which can land as disbelief, a lack of surety, and insecurity. Replace that with a downward inflection on the same phrase, and it becomes an assured, authoritative statement of fact, conveying confidence and clarity. . It's been a really vocally intensive 2 weeks. 17 hrs in studio for an audiobook 3 hrs of live-direction for VGs 3+ hrs for other jobs 25 recorded auditions I really do take good care of my voice: I have tea to warm me up (lemongrass and ginger) and tea to soothe my throat and help me sleep (honey to replace sugar: chamomile, cinnamon, vanilla), I have Nin jiom pei pa koa to coat my throat before what I know to be a vocally stressful session and I do about 10 minutes worth of warmups (lip trills, yawning, tongue stretches) before I begin a session. I haven't done karaoke for years, I don't mid-week drink, I save any dairy I'm craving for the end of my day, and only have coffee on Saturdays and Sundays (and a sneaky weekday if I finish all my work before 2pm ). I no longer record jobs on weekends, as I treasure not only work/life balance but the importance of rest days. When offered a drink during the week, 9 times out of 10 it's going to be answered with "water, please," when I don't already have my water bottle with me. So that's a little glance into the life of a voice actor, but EVEN THEN, after this fortnight, it's the first time I've genuinely thought to myself "I need to do even more for my vocal health." Mainly because, we all wish for our career to expand in opportunities, and when it does, we have to prepare for the long-game: how are we going to sustain our voices along with our growth? 11.01.2022 'OK, need to shave off 2 seconds from that read, but we looooove the pace, it sounds perfect. Can you read that faster but sound like you're not actually going any faster?' . This is a really common piece of direction in commercial voice over land. . Sometimes copy will be long. It might be because the client wants lots of info in there. Or maybe the copy writer has tested the timing by counting words and applying a standard word-per-minute estimate to the script, or maybe th...ey've read it to themselves whilst running a stopwatch. Neither of which are reliably accurate, because performance adds time to a read, and words don't all take the same time to say and that really matters over a 30 second spot. . Regardless, it's pretty common to have to shave time off a read. . One solution is to take out words. But what if that's not possible? Maybe the client insists on particular content, maybe there are legal inclusions (like T's & C's apply or Authorised by), maybe you don't even have access to the writer bc you're doing a self directed session in your home studio. . Whatever the reason, sometimes you just have to read what's in front of you in the time you have available and make it work, without sounding like a malfunctioning robot jacked up on caffeine. . So go find a piece of copy, and challenge yourself to fit it into less time. 10.01.2022 Lots of people ask me this. I started the BOOTCAMP program because I saw a gap in how new voiceover artists were approaching their training. There was a LOT of focus on the operational aspects of doing voice over. That is, how to set up a home recording studio, how to record your voice, how to soundproof and prepare your recording space, how to use a microphone, what the lingo means and how to edit your auditions and reads. ... Those things ARE important, once youre ready to actually do the work. But what about your vocal skills and your ability to deliver a professional read? (You cant polish a turd, and an untrained voice is probs gonna be a turd. Yep, I said it. SO CONTROVERSIAL. #sorrynotsorry) Theres no amount of audio processing or soundproofing or perfect recording space or expensive equipment that will make an untrained voice sound like a professional voice. That takes: Awareness being brought to the things you dont yet know. New skills being added to what you do already know. Possibly the undoing and rebuilding of what you thought you already knew. And then practice. Lots and lots of practice. And Im telling you, supported practice is so much better than going it alone. So, whats different about BOOTCAMP? Its about your voice. 09.01.2022 Its been SUCH a fun (and busy, omg!) week, and its only Wednesday. . Monday was teaching Yrs 5 & 6 drama all day then a super fun online video narration for Horizon Power that got pretty technical & specific, which I LOVE. . Tuesday was an awesome breathwork session with a new client who just DIGS the science and I got to totally geek out, yay. Then there were Bootcamp calls all day, which I LOVE because I get to talk VO and dreams and how to make them come... true. Some were NEXT STEP calls with the recent grads and some were applications for the next round. And in between, I recorded some sweet radio ads for @southerncrossaustereo from my cute little home studio. . And I also totally dropped the ball amongst all the busy and missed a NEXT STEPS call with a Bootcamp grad today, which sucks and Im really sorry it happened. I made the mistake of scheduling super tightly and I KNOW that leaves no room for random occurrences or meetings that run over or tech shit or whatever. I messed up someones day, and thats crap. . So, balance is the learning here. 07.01.2022 My girl @laura.jane.turner with the hot advice. Follow her, she's awesome. . And she's bang on. It's the same for VO. . It's you are auditioning, it's expected you can deliver. If you get cast, it's expected you can deliver. And if you get booked on the strength of your demo (ie, you didn't have to audition), it's REALLY expected.... . Which is why you need to be able to do what's on your demo, under pressure, without coaching or support. . But here's the rub, my peeps. Just being able to do what's on your demo ISN'T ENOUGH. . WHAAAAAAAAAT? . Yep. . You need to be able to do MORE than your demo shows, within the genre you've been booked for. You need to be able to move away from those reads, be flexible, show versatility, take direction and shift your interpretation and delivery on the spot. . This is often where training is SUPER helpful. Because you don't know what you don't know, right? Women in Turkey began posting black and white photos on social media last week to protest femicide and domestic violence and to grieve the violent death of Pinar Gltekin, a university student who was brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend this month. She was 27 . The challenge is you standing in solidarity for THEM, demanding change and a voice for the voiceless. 05.01.2022 Speaking truths is HARD, man. It makes us vulnerable, and thats scary. Our safety-seeking brain just loves avoiding vulnerability! But like the sandwich board says, not facing your fear invites that fear to take up residence, and that will have an impact on your entire life. #whatyouresistpersists As perfomers, seeking that vulnerability is a massive part of the job and we arent effective if we let our fear of being exposed rule our choices. ... Our performance lands as inauthentic, manufactured, an affectation, rather than a portrayal of a true human experience. Anyone watching or listening feels the incongruity and doesnt engage with the character or story. Instead, they sit separately from it and watch the acting rather than being drawn into the suspension of disbelief that a good performance elicits. Im sure you can think of an example of this in a film, tv show or play youve seen. So this concept is just as applicable to real life. If we dont bring openness and vulnerability to our interactions, we limit the connections that can happen because we havent cultivated trust. If we let fear stop us from speaking our truths, we close off communication and reduce our capacity to influence positively. Be open. Speak your truth. Be scared, and do it anyway. 01.01.2022 G'day, my peeps! Aussie VO @michaelnewcombe.voiceactor asked me a question in the comments on a post I shared about a couple of my Bootcamp grads getting signed by @moorecreativeartists. And I figured some of you might also want to know the answer! So instead of replying in the comments thread, I decided to do a proper Q&A post. It's actually going to be 3 Q&A posts bc it's a complex question with 3 parts and my answers don't fit in one post. #verbosemuch? #q&a . So here's... PART 2 of 3: . "I’m curious to know what sort of clients make you and your demo more attractive to an agency?" OK, so this is a bit of a loaded question. Because big brand names will always catch attention, right? But then the agent will ALWAYS want to see/hear the work, and if that work isn’t appropriate and relevant to the particular agency, it won’t make a lick of difference whether it’s Audi or Harry’s Discount Car Yard. As an example, if you’ve done an internal explainer video for McDonalds about how to flip burgers and you’re approaching an agent who reps in the high end commercial market, having McD’s on your client list won’t help you at all because the work you’ve done for that client isn’t relevant to the agency. But if it IS relevant, having Audi in your client list is awesome, because it shows you can deliver to the standard and current style a big brand company looks for. That makes you VERY valuable. Quick note on demos made of work you’ve been hired for vs reads developed purely for demo purposes. If you weren’t hired by the company to read the spot, having them on your demo doesn’t mean anything. Anyone can record anything with any brand name on it and whack it on their demo reel or website, so it doesn’t hold any intrinsic value, and the quality of the read will always be way more important. So the first and biggest consideration is always: can you be submitted for castings by this agency? All the big brand names in the world won’t answer that question. It may get you in the door, and that can be incredibly useful, but it won’t get you signed. You, your voice, and your skillset are what get you signed.
