13.01.2022 Hey guys and gals, this one's for all my gym going patient's trying to lose weight or put on muscle as well as athletes looking to maximise the benefits of their training. When focusing on maximum muscle synthesis for hypertrophy (ie GETTING BIGGER MUSCLES) or for maintaining a positive net protein balance (ie for INCREASING WEIGHT LOSS by increasing the resting metabolic rate) there are a few factors to consider for optimal performance. 1) How much protein should I ingest t...o maximise muscle hypertrophy? 2) When should I ingest protein to maximise muscle hypertrophy? 3) Does protein quality matter, and what should I be having? These questions have been explored in the following literature review http://journal.frontiersin.org//10.3/fphys.2015.00245/full My hot tips quick summary of the article as follows: 1)The amount of protein ingested after resistance exercise for full body maximum protein synthesis is thought to be 0.4g/kg/meal 2)Protein should be ingested within 3hrs of resistance exercise 3)Whey protein is superior within the 3hr window post exercise and should be supplemented with 3grams leucine Also it would appear that reaching contractile failure is required for optimal skeletal muscle growth and that the time under load rather than the weight or number of reps is most important for muscle growth. (note athletes need to consider greater variables as sport specific adaptations are of greater concern than mere muscle size).

08.01.2022 Vitamin D supplementation cut infection risk by 50% in people that were deficient and by 10% in people with normal vitamin D levels. Overall, the reduction in risk of respiratory infection induced by vitamin D was similar to the protective effect of the flu vaccine. The study analyzed data from 25 randomized clinical trials conducted in 14 countries including the UK, USA, Japan, India, Afghanistan, Belgium, Italy, Australia and Canada. (Rhonda Pattrick, PHD)

05.01.2022 Paragliding control practice at Town beach, looking up at the glider is actually a really good exercise for upper thoracic spine extension, how often in the day do we actually take the chance to look up?
03.01.2022 Looking to train harder and be less sore after a training session? Is DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) slowing your training progress? Or are you just looking to decrease the levels of inflammation in the body? Latest research shows promising signs that 2.5grams twice daily of oral Curcumin (an active compound in turmeric) may actually prevent DOMS and enhance recovery of muscle performance!! Train harder and more frequently with less recovery time needed and less pain, that’s a win for athletes or anyone looking to increase their fitness! References: Dronbnic et al. (2015) Reduction of delayed onset muscle soreness by a novel curcumin delivery system (Meriva): a randomised, placebo- controlled trial. Nicole et al. (2015) Curcumin supplementation likely attenuates delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
