25.01.2022 We're working with the Tasmanian Government to improve transport options for Kingborough, meaning the range of people who have access to safe, reliable public transport to and from the Hobart city centre will increase. A key component is park and ride facilities at Huntingfield and Firthside. To see the concept designs and locations and provide any feedback, the Department of State Growth has all the information available at this link.

21.01.2022 We all know that Edna is a hero of the local community, but today the Australian of the Year’s Tasmanian awards ceremony confirmed it. For those who missed the ...live stream of the ceremony, here is Edna being announced out of four finalists as the Tasmanian Local Hero and accepting her award from Her Excellecy Prof. Kate Warner, Governor of Tasmania. In accepting her award, Edna was as humble as always - paying tribute to the many wonderful volunteers who help make Kingborough Helping Hands the great local charity that it is. A well deserved honour for a true Local Hero

21.01.2022 The Mayor is excited to announce the upgrade of four playgrounds. We will be upgrading the playgrounds on Willowbend Road in Kingston, Donohoe Gardens and Alamo... Close in Blackmans Bay and the Louisa Hinsby Reserve in Taroona. These upgrades will be funded through Council's decision to sell four blocks of land. #KCworks #playgrounds #LGTas

19.01.2022 Edna Pennicott OAM Her Excellency, Professor Kate Warner, Governor of Tasmania, today presented Edna with her Medal of the Order of Australia. Edna was fantastic. She spoke about her time volunteering across Kingborough and had the room laughing as she described the best way to prepare a saveloy to the Governor. It was a proud moment for our Council as Edna received the award specifically for her service to Kingborough. ... The final piece: Her Excellency referred to Edna as ‘The Queen of Kingborough’, so it’s official now! Kingborough Helping Hands

To celebrate the end of winter and the reopening of Blackmans Bay Beach (south), Jo Westwood - Deputy Mayor and myself are jumping in the water at 8am this Saturday with local swimming group, the Weedy Sea Dragons. 16.01.2022 Earlier this year, Kingborough Council endorsed the plan which included a second turf wicket on the twin ovals. While we were prepared to fund the ongoing maintenance costs of an additional wicket, our expectation was that Cricket Tasmania would fund the installation. We fully understand and respect that Cricket has not been able to do that this year, but it does mean we need to reassess our short-term options. A second turf wicket will not be laid this season. The non-incl...usion of the Kingborough Knights in the women’s premier league competition was also extremely disappointing. While a second turf wicket is still needed, the failure to include the Knights in the premier competition has reduced the project's urgency. We were fortunate that the Tasmanian Government has funded a feasibility study into a third oval and that work is complete. A third oval would be multi-use and include a turf wicket. Our intention now is to discuss funding options with all sides of politics ahead of the next budget, or even election. At $2.5 million, the project is shovel ready and responds to growing demand for these facilities. Not only are there over 2,000 homes planned or under construction around the Kingborough Sports Precinct, the growing level of female participation in sports like AFL, soccer and cricket continues to add to the demand for grounds. Cricket and AFL Football are important stakeholders at the Kingborough Sports precinct, but they are no more or less important than other sports like little athletics and soccer. The fact is the precinct has not seen the level of investment it needs since the twin ovals were built. The planning for any new development will need to include all those stakeholders.

15.01.2022 Tragic news for the Kingborough community today. Our thoughts are with everyone involved. We are still waiting to receive more information about the crash. https://www.abc.net.au//man-and-child-killed-in-c/12553714

10.01.2022 Good morning everyone

09.01.2022 So great to see kids swimming at south Blackmans Bay Beach again this beautiful afternoon. Everything is looking for the upcoming summer

08.01.2022 Green waste collection starts from this week. It’s the opposite week to your recycling bin so for our household it’s tomorrow morning and we are full thanks to George’s excellent gardening efforts.

07.01.2022 Last year, Planning and Housing Minister, Roger Jaensch, agreed to attend a public meeting about his Huntingfield development. While we could not safely host a public forum during COVID-19 restrictions earlier this year, we are now back hosting COVID-safe events at our Kingston Community Hub. In a letter, I explained to the Minister that we can now safely hold a Huntingfield public forum and live stream for those unable to attend. Sadly, six weeks after I wrote that letter... asking the Minister to fulfil his commitment, he is yet to respond. There is nothing fast about his 'fast-track' process. 14 months since the process started, he still has not lodged a development application for anything on the site.

06.01.2022 Margate Primary School is now full of world record holders

06.01.2022 A Kingborough Council playground audit found more than half its 48 playgrounds were in an unsatisfactory condition and 18 were categorised as needing critical upgrades to comply with its playground strategy. In order to fund a program to renew these playgrounds, Council is proposing to dispose of seven disused Council properties, at the same time making six of them available for new housing and one for light industrial development. You can read more in the link below. Looking forward to your feedback, which can be done by writing to [email protected]

04.01.2022 The Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Dean Winter provides an update on the outcomes of the tonight’s debate on the Properties for Disposal report, item 17.1 on page 40 ...of tonight’s agenda. We will aim to get the audio recording up on our website tomorrow so everyone can hear the debate. Two blocks of land were not included for considered for sale, the plot on Bruny Island and the block on Gemalla Road in Margate. The full resolution is below. That: a) Council resolves to sell the following properties by listing with an agent on the open market in accordance with the provisions of Section 177 and 178 of the Local Government Act 1993, with the proceeds from the sale to be transferred to the Open Space Fund and allocated for investment in accordance with the Kingborough Play Space and Playground Strategy 20202025 and Kingborough Play Space and Playground Audit 2020 as follows: 1. 110 Channel Highway, Taroona (following relocation of the stormwater main) with the proceeds from the sale allocated for investment in Louisa Hinsby Park, Taroona; 2. Lot 2, Mt Pleasant Road, Kingston with the proceeds from the sale allocated for investment in Willowbend Park, Kingston; 3. 281 Roslyn Avenue, Blackmans Bay with the proceeds from the sale allocated for investment in Alamo Close Park, Blackmans Bay; and 4. 41 Hiern Road, Blackmans Bay (following the creation of an easement on the title to provide a public right of way through to the Opal Drive Reserve) with the proceeds from the sale allocated for investment in Donohoe Gardens, Blackmans Bay; b) The balance of any remaining funds to be held in the Open Space Fund for investment in accordance with relevant strategic plans. c) Council revisit the sale of the land at Alonnah if there has been no substantial progress from the community in developing it as a public space within 12 months. We apologise again for the audio failure and the frustration for everyone, we will solve the issue before the next meeting.

04.01.2022 If you're in the Kingston area this Saturday, be aware that we will be conducting a fuel reduction burn near The Lea if the weather allows. The total area of th...is burn will be approximately 36 hectares, and is likely to take 1-2 days to complete. Smoke may persist some days afterward depending on wind conditions. During burning operations public access to this area will be restricted. People must keep well out of the burn site while the burn is taking place and for the following days until safety checks have been made along tracks and trails. While the fire intensity will be low, it will generate flames, smoke and ash. People with medical conditions are advised to have a personal plan for avoiding smoke from the burn. Additional health, asthma, and air quality information is available at: http://www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/.../alerts/air/bushfire_smoke... https://asthma.org.au/about.../triggers/bushfire-smoke/... Further information about this burn is available by phone 1800 000 699 or email [email protected]. A map of planned burns is available on the TFS website at www.fire.tas.gov.au/Show?pageId=colWhatsBurningNow

04.01.2022 *** MEDIA RELEASE - A Day on the Beach 2021 cancelled *** The organising committee for A Day on the Beach has made the difficult decision to cancel next year’s ...event, scheduled to take place on 26 January 2021. A Day on the Beach President, Else Phillips, said the decision to cancel the Australia Day event was not taken lightly. Unfortunately, the lack of certainty around COVID-19 restrictions, and the difficulty managing crowd numbers and social distancing, meant that we couldn’t guarantee the event would be Covid-safe, Ms Phillips said. These restrictions are in place for a reason, and as much as we would like to bring Tasmanians together for another great day of family fun, the health of the community comes first. We understand that this is disappointing for our sponsors, stallholders, suppliers, participating sporting and community groups, and the thousands of Tasmanians who enjoy attending A Day on the Beach every year. We look forward to Kingston Beach coming to life again on Australia Day 2022, should conditions allow, Ms Phillips said. 16 September 2020
