22.01.2022 This article is talking predominantly about younger children than what we teach in debating but the concepts equally apply to older children too. Each child develops at their own pace and some children take longer to grasp concepts than others - in both debating and in every area of life. If a child doesn't seem to be making progress as fast as others, it's vitally important that we as parents and educators don't "write them off" but instead offer them time, support and continued belief in them. https://www.huffingtonpost.com//the-milestones-that-matter

22.01.2022 This is one of my favourite things about education. It talks about 10 expectations that students should have of schools. What??? Normally we talk about the expectations that schools and teachers have of students. This website and concepts are so refreshing - and enlightening. Aren't the things listed the things you'd have liked from your school growing up? Whilst we don't see our debating students for more than an hour a week usually, we still do our best to meet these expectations in our programs. http://10x.bigpicture.org/

21.01.2022 Honestly, we really don't have many students who just try to make things up in their debates, perhaps because we try to be quite rigorous about encouraging them to find credible evidence to support their arguments. Having said that, there's facts and there's facts! Not all facts are equally credible and this is something that students become more competent with as they gain experience in debating. When students first start, they tend to just use any facts without understanding whether they're really credible or accurate. But that comes with experience and practice. It's one reason of many that we encourage students to keep debating, not just do it once, because there's always so many levels of improvement to be gained with experience.

20.01.2022 I found this really interesting - snippets from a children's public speaking competition... without any speaking. But what's interesting is watching their posture and body language. It really makes a difference and it's something we often overlook! But just seeing these children's body language and expression is so engaging. Something to think about! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A5u20f2R70

20.01.2022 What a powerful and emotional speech from Greta Thunberg. And great use of palm cards too - mostly looking at the audience but just looking down for reminders :)

20.01.2022 This is another interesting article about critical thinking. It states, "We can train ourselves to become better critical thinkers, but it’s also important that we teach these skills to kids. Studies have shown how important this ability is to our success, and yet many feel that we’re doing a terrible job of teaching it. This study, however, may lead to educators and parents realizing that these skills are teachable. The implications of a better thinking society are not quan...titative, but I do believe they would be extraordinary." We agree that the implications of a better-thinking society would be extraordinary, and that's one reason we love to teach critical thinking through debating! http://bigthink.com//can-you-be-taught-how-to-think-better

20.01.2022 Dear Teachers, parents, debaters and would be debaters. We've had such a great year at GOZONE Debating and we're preparing to expand next year to include more schools in the opportunity to build skills and confidence to take to middle school. There is nothing like a challenge to help you motivate yourself to learn new things.... School Awards for 2018 St Hilda's Anglican Girls Junior School -Chidley Campus were our First place winners for 2018. Loreto-Nedlands Primary School were Second place winners It is remarkable that all students in Year 5 & 6 took part, even those learning English as a second language. St Mary's Junior School were Third place. Well done to all the other schools and groups who took part. We had three teams reach Platinum level in their debates and all school had teams at Gold level in their debates. Even newcomers to debating worked with experienced debaters and achieved more than they imagined. Big thank you to all coaches, parents and schools for their support. I'm very proud of all we have achieved this year. Lesli Grant, Owner

19.01.2022 School holidays are nearly upon us again. Thanks so much for a great term everyone. Wishing you a wonderful break - and we'll see you soon for an exciting Term 3!!

19.01.2022 This is something we try to help children overcome in debating - to not let their inner critics or voices of doubt hold them back! I think it's important as adults to try to model the things we want children to learn whenever we can too!

18.01.2022 Friendly Debating builds life skills. We're not encouraging bullying and winning at all costs, we're building young people who can do their research and speak up for things including themselves. If they have the gift of being able to talk easily- we celebrate it - YAHOO! We have room for you to talk in your group planning, in interactive class sessions. Join us at Mt Claremont Community Centre- Hakea Room on Wed 4-5pm. Its a relaxed, mixed age group in action to learn. Lesli Grant

18.01.2022 Debating tip of the day: never let students just say that they found facts "on the internet." Always encourage them to cite their sources.

17.01.2022 After 20 years as GOZONE Debating, it's time for a change!! We are super-excited to announce that Gozone is becoming Rise & Shine Debating - a name that we feel really reflects our philosophy of empowering all students to share their thoughts, ideas and talents. We'll still be offering amazing debating classes, workshops and programs, but we've got a new website, new student handbook and lots of other exciting new developments on the way too. ... Here is our new website: www.debating.net.au. We're still working on the finishing touches, so if there's something that doesn't work yet or you're seeking more information, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

16.01.2022 We talk a lot about how to help thrive in a world of constant change. For that matter, it's adults who need help with this too! This article offers some great ideas for adults and children alike! https://ideas.ted.com/how-to-thrive-in-a-world-where-change

15.01.2022 This is an interesting article about how empathy can lead to creativity. I also found the 7 empathetic archetypes interesting as a teacher, to see them at play in group dynamics, and to perhaps try to cultivate those qualities more in team work. https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/empathy-more-creative

15.01.2022 Looking for things to do in the school holidays that will encourage your child's creativity? This article offers some inspiration for raising creative kids - a trait that we encourage in debating and something that is a sought-after skill in the workplace. The ideas are relevant at any age, we believe! https://tinkerlab.com/10-simple-ways-to-raise-creative-kids

15.01.2022 4 years ago, Jack Carroll delighted audiences with his comedy performance on Britain's Got Talent. It will brighten your day to watch it, but I share it because we often talk to students about the use of humour in their debates. It's fine to use humour if you do it appropriately, but sometimes we do need to remind students that a debate is different to stand-up comedy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taTSxDVEHRM

14.01.2022 I love this quote. It's one of the things we're all about at Gozone Debating. We do help students strive for excellence in their final debate, but debating is as much about the journey and learning as it as about the end product!

13.01.2022 Wow! Talk about young people standing up and having their say! It's so inspiring to see Australia's youth around the nation uniting to send such a strong message to our leaders. Let's hope they listen!

12.01.2022 We love to start our Mondays with something inspirational and it doesn't get much more inspirational than Nick Vujicic. This video is humbling and really makes us think about what we're saying we can't do. If you have children, I urge you to show them this video if they haven't seen it before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOzsjEmjjHs

09.01.2022 This is a tool especially for teachers - Bloom's Digital Taxonomy. It takes the concepts of Bloom's Taxonomy and applies them specifically to the digital landscape, showing skills ranging from low to high ordering thinking. It's a great way for teachers to check that the digital work their students are doing has a good mixture of skills and isn't all just focuses on the lower order thinking skills. There's a great poster you can download that might be handy for a classroom t...oo. I've found it handy in teaching debating to see where the students' skills sit when they're researching and making sure I'm extending them. https://globaldigitalcitizen.org/blooms-digital-taxonomy-ve

09.01.2022 This was a speech given by Severn Suzuki well over 20 years ago. Today, Severn is still speaking at conferences and other opportunities to advocate for environmental reform. Her opportunity to speak as a child about something she was (and still is) passionate about has stayed with her for her whole life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXiWi8LnZ7I

08.01.2022 Here's a little bit of inspiration to get you going on a Monday. If you have never seen the movie "Pay It Forward," it's worth a watch. This scene talks about how kids can make a difference and the importance of being a global thinker. I won't say any more though in case you haven't seen the movie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwP36w2074w

08.01.2022 At GOZONE Debating we have an Unsung Hero Award. There are always young people who coach and help others behind the scenes. At GOZONE Debating we have an Unsung Hero Award. There are always young people who coach and help others behind the scenes.

08.01.2022 Here at Gozone Debating we love a good inspiring story (especially on a Monday!). This is a great story about another wonderful young lady standing up for her beliefs! You're never too young (or too old) to make a difference. www.ted.com//mckenna_pope_want_to_be_an_activist_start_wit

07.01.2022 The same applies to debating - the more you do it, the better you get... unless you're a banana :)

05.01.2022 Community debating is now available to students at all the primary schools in the area at Mt Claremont Community Centre. 04.01.2022 I love this quote. It's what education should be about! And we truly feel that debating is one great way to equip students to educate themselves all through their lives. They learn to research, to support an argument with facts, to collaborate and work with others, to speak with confidence and so much more!

03.01.2022 Do you need some good news, something which inspires? I want to share the work of one of our Mt Claremont Community Class students, Diya Sanjay. The song is most inspiring in this time of violence and discord but her reading of the piece by Roald Dahl is also wonderful.

03.01.2022 A sneak peak into one example that may be useful for one of our Term 3 Topics! Stay tuned for more news on our Term 3 program and exciting developments coming soon.
