24.01.2022 Well I have to say what a stressful and busy start to the spring season with laminitis everywhere, (the worst year I've seen) and the horrendous weeds after the drought which have caused alot of issues for people with laminitis and also stringhalt in the larger breeds. We can never be to careful in the management of our equine family and even then sometimes things happen so quickly even if we try our best. I have to say since February/march this year, I've had my most time ...working along side vets to help our lovely horses and ponies and been able to see plenty of radiographs of hooves the most since February 2017 and unfortunately there will be alot more to come. Im here to help my clients and friends in more ways than just trimming and maintaining hooves i have a huge love for our equine family and really do like to help where I can. I do find some days mentally and physically tiring as one of my lovely clients found out the other day along side looking after my 13 miniature ponies at home which is a full time job in itself but at the end of the day its satisfying to know ive helped and animal or a person in a day out and about on my trimming journey See more

22.01.2022 Well after battling and having a stressful few months with my lovely old girl Taffy who is 20, we now have one happy girl and one happy mum . Taffy had a sudden acute lameness in the off side fore one morning. For some time I thought for sure a foot abcess and after soaking and poulticing her foot and regular trims and searching there was nothing. I believe in the end it was injury that took time and rest to heel. With a couple of visits to the veterinary clinical centre ...in Wagga my girl is sorted and really on the road to recovery.. After radiographs, blood tests and lameness exams Taffy has PPID equine cushings disease, insulin resistance and mild osteo arthritis in the coffin joints in her front feet . After being on medication for only a very short time her recurrent laminitis has resolved and she travels better each day. Taffs whole body, movement and coat is improving and overall she is nice and bright and happy in herself. I also have her on 4cyte for a joint supplement. To say I'm really happy is an understatement. In a couple of weeks she will be back out on the track and I will monitor her progress. Some before and after videos See more

21.01.2022 Well an update video taken today of my beautiful old girl Taffy, my IR and cushings pony. Taff has had such a great turn around since being on her two types of medication being pergolide for her cushings and metformin tablets to help regulate her insulin along with 4cyte epitalis for her mild osteo arthritis in the pedal bones of both front hooves. She is travelling so well with no form of hoof protection and even more so with the more movement I offer her. A couple of months ago she was battling laminitis due to her cushings ( on no pasture what so ever) , she was quite lame, stiff and sore and was having what I thought were muscle tremors, pain and or muscle fatigue. She is so bright and active which im so happy about

11.01.2022 Well I thought it was time to do a write up on little dolly a beautiful miniature pony which I have been trimming regularly for 2 years now. Dollys hooves have been a working progress as they grow quite quickly and she is very prone to laminitis. Her overall hoof health has improved greatly from when I first started trimming her. The collateral grooves either side of the frog in her hooves were quite deep and often quite thrushy and the central sulcus in the back part of he...r frog was quite deep also. Dollys frog has made good improvements as well as the various angles of her hooves. Her hooves show indications of sub clinical laminitis but much less than previously. Dolly responds very well to a maintenance trim every 4 weeks, its an ideal time to keep her hooves nice and functional and to the best they can be which helps her body also. Dolly has owners who love her dearly and want whats best for her. See more
11.01.2022 Good morning all, The last few months I have been doing alot of thinking.(As Roy sais oh no what now lol). Im feeling there is a need for another laminitis rehabilitation centre specialising in ponies and miniatures. Im currently working on getting set up to take on one pony at a time and to rehabilitate them back to good health with my current set up of a safely fenced jenny Craig paddock with a shelter full of rehab bedding and soon to be stables and yards. I have lots o...f great ideas for a future set up to build to cater for multiple ponies at anyone time under my full care from extreme cases to not so bad ponies. Laminitis rehabilitation im very passionate about and it is my speciality and as most people know I really love working with the Ponies. I would really like peoples thoughts and ideas. Happy Monday See more

05.01.2022 Ive been doing lots of thinking lately and have a few ideas to pop out there to my clients. Watch this space. Will throw some ideas out there over the weekend.
05.01.2022 Good evening all, Let's talk about horses going slightly sore after trimming on soft or hard ground. I as a trimmer feel its very important to look at the whole picture, I do my best to assess each horse or ponies movement and there hooves prior to and after trimming and feel how they are feeling during the trim. One of many questions I ask prior to trimming is have you had any lameness issues with your horse in the past and how does your horse travel over hard ground. Ev...ery horse has different hooves and their are various reasons as to why a horse may be tender after trimming. You could be looking at sub clinical laminitis, thin or soft soles just to name a couple. Im not one to trim every horse the same each have their own individual needs. I hear alot of people say my horse was previously sore after the farrier or trimmer. Its important to investigate why and make sure it doesn't keep happening or atleast each trim improve. Trimming cycles need to be kept short to create healthy functional hooves and if trying to condition hooves after a horse coming out of shoes light trims regularly is the way to go. You would surprised how getting good blood flow through the frog helps just a little thought thats been on my mind today
04.01.2022 Good morning to my clients/friends. Due to the cost of tools and extra travel my price for trimming will be $55.00 as of the 1st of July. Please refer to the current price list on my Policy. Regards Deb

02.01.2022 Good morning all, On Monday this week I'd booked in to see the vets at the veterinary clinical centre at CSU in Wagga. Mum and I were taking two ponies Sailer and Maggie down for their routine dental and Taffy for another lameness examination and radiographs of her 4 feet. Over time I have been watching both Maggie and Taffy and coming to the conclusion that metabolically things aren't right and why are bouts of laminitis happening when they are extremely well managed and ...fed only a tested lower sugar and low starch diet and on no pasture at all at present. I was seeing various symptoms of what I thought looked to be more like insulin resistant and or equine cushings disease (PPID) which stands for Pituitary Pars intermedia disfuction. So I decided to get full bloods ran on both ponies and yesterday was a disappointing day as well as day where I felt atleast I have the answers to alot of my whys and head shaking lately. Both Taff and Maggie tested positive to both insulin resistance and equine cushings disease they both will be on pergolide medication for the rest of their days to help with their symptoms and keep them as healthy as possible. Taff has gone through a tough time of late with a touch of laminitis, being overall stiff on the colder days and a lameness in her o/s front foot which comes and goes and me baffled as to what this could be. Getting the radiographs of her feet was also a good plan as she has been diagnosed with osteo arthritis of the coffin joint and around the coronet band, so with osteo arthritis, laminitis, insulin resistance and cushings disease its no wonder things have been a little tough for my old chookie taff. Taff is 20 years old and I've had her 12 years and Maggie is 15 and I've had her 14 and a 1/2 years. I thought I would share my story with my clients and friends. Monitoring your ponies and horses closely is very important as subtle abnormal changes you will notice and getting onto problems early can mean better outcomes for our equine family. In particular if you own pony breeds PPID is really worth learning all about.
