22.01.2022 Its very sad when you hear of a case of American Foul Brood devastating a new beekeeper. The learning curve is steep enough when starting out without this added heartbreak. It can and does happen to anyone with bee colonies . This time it has hit in Harrietville. Possibly came in a hive bought up from Geelong last Autumn and has been found in a second hive....fingers crossed for his third hive. A bad case of Chalk brood was noted by owner and probably masked the need for f...urther inspection for other disease. Owner rang me re his concerns about the hive a few days ago and I strongly recommended checking for AFB. The photos I received yesterday show that this hive would have been showing signs of possible AFB for some time. Ie 1. shotgun pattern across brood frames 2. Sunken brood caps 3. Discoloration of brood 4. Pin holes and generally untidy chewed looking capping's 5. Other disease like the chalk brood 6. Bee numbers dropping quite markedly over past month etc. Mind you AFB can be present before it becomes evident to the eye. So, knowing your diseases and what to look for is important. If you are unsure about something you see , take photos & ask for help. Or send straight to Jo Riordan (local Biosecurity Officer) at Rutherglen. I have his number. You can get hive side AFB kits ( I have some in stock) to have at the ready if suspect something. You can do a "honey" test each year too through Gribbles Vetinary Services (have some kits at club $11 ea) for peace of mind. You cant guard against who your bees rub shoulders with out in the field but you can try to be quick to pick it up if you are unfortunate to cop it and minimize its spread in your area. We all need to stay vigilant for each other. See more

18.01.2022 Finally have some time to throw a few escape (or clearer) boards on! It has been a slow start to the honey season up here but the girls have finally finished some frames to spare. I sold some hives this season to get back to a more manageable number with everything else I do. Will have 6 or so ideal supers to extract tomorrow plus two others full in freezer from last Autumn. I find ideals supers so much easier to handle and uncap. I would recommend for lady beekeepers and folk with back trouble . Make sure escape boards are up the right way when you put them on . Will be doing some honey extracting from about 11.00am tomorrow if any new beeks are interested in dropping in ...just message me. #EscapeBoards #DebzzzBeekeeping #debzzzbeekeepingparadise #honeyextracting #purehoney

14.01.2022 The kits cost about $10. And you purchase direct from Gribbles. Then you pay Gribbles for the honey culture test after you send it away. They will send u an invoice.. I do this every year. It is great peace of mind as Benedict says. http://gribblesvets.com.au/veter/biosecurity/honey-testing/

12.01.2022 Photos of severe wax moth damage to frames left sitting (I don’t know what happened to bee colony) from a brood box of a Flow Hive sold on. Pupae in some cocoons were still alive. For your interest. Note two of their tell tale signs i.e spider like web and pitting in woodwork.

10.01.2022 Time to be on your guard when doing inspections for the pests that may be present. Weaker hives are more susceptible but I have found wax moth in brood comb of a very strong hive. So know what to look for. #beekeeping #DebzzzBeekeeping #bees #beehives https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//other-pests-and-disea/wax-moth

10.01.2022 Day 7 of Flower Photo Challenge. Hope a video is acceptable . Bees collect honey or nectar. You can see the bees probiscus (tongue) out in some of those clip sucking up nectar. Darwinea ...native.

09.01.2022 A little warm tonight. Interestingly the other 3 hives are not doing this, they have locally bred queens. This queen is from right down South Vic and they get up late in winter and hang out front as soon as it starts to warm up. Bit of ‘washboarding’ happening here. #bees #beekeeping #debzzz beekeeping

08.01.2022 Yesterday’s Introduction to Beekeeping course went off well. Twenty odd people booked in (I don’t mean they were odd....hmmm maybe some... ). The day is designed to give perspective beekeepers an overview of what the hobby entails. Photos: Group split into two after lunch. Neil Padbury took half off to do a hive inspection while I ran through the pros and cons of smokers and how to light them. I’m surprised we didn’t invoke a visit from the fire brigade with all the smoke ...generated!! Oh must mention the delicious morning and arvo tea supplied by Maree Roberts at Marobe Cakes, they were a Big Hit as usual! And thank you to Ian Fitzgerald for a lend of his close by hives . Future Courses: We will run one more this year to try and catch up due to the resent Covid restrictions. See link now live. 04.01.2022 Laying Workers: I often see incorrect info posted on different beekeeping FB sites about laying workers. I came accross this recently and it is one of the best succinct pieces of info on the subject I have found. If your are a beekeeper and not sure about this subject or only have ‘hearsay’ as your info base, please take time to read through to the end of this piece to be properly informed on this poorly understood subject. Note: if you maintain regular inspections on your... brood box throughout the seasons you should not end up with the problem of laying workers. During spring I check for queen cells every 7 days. Once colony has settled from this into nectar gathering and I provide room if/when they need it I check brood box about 3-4week intervals. Of course honey supers will be checked more often depending on season. #Beekeeping #LayingWorkers #Bees #DebzzzBeekeepingParadise #DebzzzBeekeeping #Beehives https://www.beverlybees.com/laying-workers/
