25.01.2022 The difference a quality deck and verandah does to the look of a house is massive, not to mention the added value to the house.

24.01.2022 The things you have to do when you work by yourself and you're building above your head. It took me longer to build the support scaffold for the 240x45 beams than it did to install the beams for the patio.

23.01.2022 From water damage yesterday to termite damage today. As you can see, my client has had extreme termite damage to their laundry door. After pulling out the eaten door jamb, I also had to remove the eaten studs behind the jamb. Luckily the weatherboards are ceder, termites don't like ceder, so they were all good. I replaced what was left of the studs with new treated pine studs, then I installed a new external door jamb. I refitted the existing door as that wasn't touched by the termites, then I refitted the screen door. The client is very happy because they haven't been able to use that door in five years.

22.01.2022 My name is Darren It's not Karen I wear a mask while at Bunnings I'm not going to stand around for half an hour arguing about my human rights I don't want to get the Chinese virus... I care about my health Don't be like Karen Be like Darren. See more

21.01.2022 Another very happy customer. Now she can sit outside and have a smoke without getting wet and enjoy having meals or there in the summer without the sun bearing down on her. Also, the pergolas will keep the sun out of the house. This was a nice job to do, very challenging because of the size of the timbers and because it was all above my head.

21.01.2022 This is a valuable lesson that I have learnt the hard way. Don't do a job just because the people seem nice, do the job because they want a high quality job done right, at the price you give them.

19.01.2022 After 6 long days, I'm finally home. Still in pain, walking very tentatively, and on a massive course of powerful antibiotics to stop any infection that may pop up, but at least I'm now home.

18.01.2022 Just a small job to occupy my morning. My client has a hairdressing business that she runs from home, and she wanted some laserlite over her front entry so as her clients don't get too wet when is raining. She is very happy with the final result

18.01.2022 It's taken 6 years, but I'm finally making good use of one of our rooms upstairs. I'm getting busy enough to justify having my own office space, so what better way to utilise one of the rooms. It just needs to be repainted because this purple colour is absolutely hideous.

17.01.2022 An icy start to the work day - 2 degrees but it will be a beautiful Friday :-)

16.01.2022 Another very happy customer. I replaced this crappy aluminium glass door that had a broken handle, with a nice new solid timber door.

16.01.2022 Another very happy customer. The clients elderly mother has moved in and they have turned the front sitting room in to her bedroom. The client wanted to turn the area in to a proper room for her mother, so that's where I came in and weaved my magic. On a side note, it was her mother's choice of colour for the doors

15.01.2022 I've been pretty busy the last couple of weeks, as you can see. I've redone the existing deck they had, and built a new deck to blend in with it. As you can see, it has made a massive difference to their nice little weekender. It's a pity they won't be able to enjoy it until the middle of September, because they live in Melbourne and because of lock down, aren't able to travel. When they are able to come to their weekender, they are going to love the new deck.

14.01.2022 Another happy client. Last one for the year. I turned a crappy deck, that the owner pulled apart before I could take some before photos, in to a deck and pergola that they can enjoy for years to come.

14.01.2022 When you are thinking about getting a deck built, don't just go for the cheapest price, because you really do get what you pay for. The first four photos is a deck that was built by a "builder" that builds decks and patios. Now I've been saying for many years, just because someone is a registered builder doesn't mean they know what they are doing. Builders are only as good as the carpenters they employ. The deck this bloke built is shocking. The gaps between the boards aren't... even close to be being even. The joins aren't anywhere near tight. And the screws aren't in a nice straight line. It's the little things that can make or break a deck. The next four photos are of one of my decks. As you can see, the gaps between the boards are even, the boards are in a nice straight line, the joins are closed up the way they should be, and the screws are in a straight line. Going back to the little things that can make or break a deck, I even line up the screws on the edge boards with a gap in the boards just to make it more pleasing to the eye. It's the little things like that that most people don't notice, but they know there's something that makes the quality of one of my decks stand out from the rest, they just can't put their finger on it. So please, if you are seriously thinking about a deck which will add value to you home, don't scrimp, pay the bit extra and get the quality you and your house deserve. I'm sure you wouldn't be happy if you got a sub-standard job that you will never be happy with.

12.01.2022 I already had a very happy customer when I built his deck almost 2 months ago. He then wanted a roof over it, which I gave him. So now he is over the moon. I put clear laserlite over the window and the sliding door to let light in to the house. The tricky part of this seemingly simple roof, was building the hip. Because the front deck is only 2 metres wide, and the side deck is 3 metres wide, the hip wasn't able to be at 45 degrees, which made me use the old grey matter to try and work out how it was going to work. As you can see, it came up a treat.

10.01.2022 Here's a small job I completed during the week. As you can see, the original steps were long past their use by date. I ripped them out and built some new, solid, safe steps. The owner is very happy.

09.01.2022 This will be a first for me. The client wants a plastic deck. I've never layed one before, I'm a plastic deck virgin. Hopefully it's gentle with me

08.01.2022 Another quick job. Replace a water damaged door jamb with a timber one. At least now my client is able to close her bathroom door. This is what happens when you get those volume builders...Henley Homes, Simmonds homes, etc... build your house. They don't care about quality and they hire kids that really don't have a clue. Any chippy that knows what they are doing, knows that MDF and water don't mix. So why on earth would you use MDF door jambs in a bathroom?

07.01.2022 Another very happy customer. In his words "it looks stunning" This place is a weekender for them, so, because of the strict lockdown rules, they will be unable to enjoy it. It has made a huge difference to the look of the place.

07.01.2022 Another happy customer. The owner removed the old decking and baseboards. I replaced those old joists with new ones. Made the subfloor straight and level. Layed new merbau decking and gave it two coats of natural decking oil. Notice the straightness of the screw line. It's the small details like that that turn a good deck in to a great deck.

06.01.2022 Just a small job this morning. I had to replace a verandah post and post support. The post was extremely rotted out and the post support was rusted out. Now it's a good as new.

05.01.2022 Another happy customer. Their old deck was treated pine, plus it was installed wrong. So after 25 years, they decided to upgrade their deck. The clients removed all of the old decking and they were hoping to be able to use the existing joists. I replaced the joists with new ones because the original ones were in a bad way. The new deck looks so much nicer, and it is more level than what was there. They will get many years enjoyment out of it.

04.01.2022 This hat is a godsend on these bitter cold mornings. One thing I hate is cold ears, and this hat keeps them toasty warm.

03.01.2022 Another very happy customer. The brief was to close the back yard up so they can keep their dog in. What I gave them was exactly what they were hoping for.

02.01.2022 Corner detail of the deck.

02.01.2022 If you get someone to hang doors for you, make sure you get someone that knows what they're doing. There are far too many cowboys in the building industry that think carpentry is easy. They undercut REAL tradesmen and get the jobs. Then the job they do is second rate. Doors have what is called a lock block in them. That's a solid piece of timber where the handle goes. It's easy to know which edge the lock block is on, because that the edge with the stickers. ... As you can see, this hack doesn't know that and put the handle on the opposite edge. The flush pull that will be installed wont last long because the screws that hold it in place are just going in to soft thin mdf. It's cowboys like this that give real tradesmen a bad name. So be careful with who you choose to do your next job.

02.01.2022 I am having a well earned break until the 11th of January. It has been a very hectic and busy last 6 months since I started up Decks By Darren again, and I would just like to thank everyone that made that possible. Let's hope 2021 will be great year... I would just like to wish everyone a very merry and safe Christmas and I will see you in the new year. Stay safe.

01.01.2022 It's great when a client makes you lunch
